OBS graduates posted a trio of stakes wins at Kentucky Downs Preview Day on Sunday at Ellis Park.
Gaining Ground Racing LLC’s Factor This defended his title in the $100,000 Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup Stakes, taking charge early after pressing the pace, opening the lead a furlong out and holding on to win by half a length. It’s the fourth straight stakes victory for the 5-year-old graded stakes winning gelding by The Factor, who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 before he was purchased for $11,000 out of the Niall Brennan Stables consignment at the 2017 OBS Spring Sale. William Branch’s Carotari circled horses on the turn to reach contention in the $100,000 Runhappy Preview Turf Sprint Stakes, took command leaving the eighth pole and went on to win by a length over fellow OBS graduate Tiger Blood (August ’14), who closed well for second. That’s two stakes wins for the 4-year-old gelding by Artie Schiller, trained by Brian Lynch, now 15-5-4-2 with $311,588 in earnings. George Chris Coleman and Brad King’s Into Mystic tracked the pacesetter into the stretch of the $100,000 Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies Sprint Stakes, wore down the leader in the lane and eased away late to score by a length and a half. It’s the first stakes victory for the 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief, purchased for $650,000 out of the Paul Sharp consignment at the 2018 OBS Spring Sale after an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. Dan J. Agnew, Rodney E. Orr, Jerry Schneider and John V. Xitco’s Collusion Illusion earned a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with a victory over older horses in the $251,500 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar on Saturday. The 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Twirling Candy rallied on the turn to reach contention, slipped between horses to take the lead on the inside in the final sixteenth and held off a late charge to score by a nose. It’s the third graded stakes win for the lightly raced colt, trained by Mark Glatt, and leaves him with a 6-5-0-0 career record and $398,751 in earnings. Three Diamonds Farm’s Cross Border battled between horses in the stretch run of Saturday’s $250,000 Bowling Green Stakes (G2) at Saratoga, crossed the wire second by a neck, and was awarded the victory when the stewards disqualified Sadler’s Joy. It’s the first graded stakes win and second straight stakes win at Saratoga for the 6-year-old ridgling by English Channel, sold for $10,000 by de Meric Sales, Agent, at the 2016 OBS June Sale after working an Under Tack quarter in :22 2/5. Klaravich Stables, Inc.’s Reinvestment Risk looks like a horse with a future after his debut for trainer Chad Brown in Saratoga’s first race on Saturday, a $72,000 six-furlong maiden special weight test on the main track. After saving ground in the early going, the 2-year-old colt by Upstart took command on the rail coming out of the turn and drew away quickly, opening a big lead and scoring in hand by 7-3/4 lengths, running six furlongs in 1:09 4/5 and earning $39,600. It’s the fourth stakes win for the 4-year-old colt by Big Brown, trained by John Terranova, now 12-5-4-0 with $505,145 in earnings. Tracy Farmer’s Lady Grace led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $175,700 Royal North Stakes (G2) at Woodbine on Saturday, charging from off the pace along the rail on the turn, swinging out for the drive and getting up in the final yards to score by three quarters of a length. Stablemate Eyeinthesky (October ’17) closed well but settled for second, a head in front of late running Bohemian Bourbon (June ’18). It’s the second graded stakes win for the 4-year-old daughter of No Nay Never, purchased for $210,000 out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2018 OBS March Sale after an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5. Two pairs of 2020 OBS March Sale graduates were one-two in a pair of Saratoga maiden special weight tests for 2-year-olds on Saturday, one on the main track and one on the turf.
Ironhorse Racing Stable LLC and Secure Investments’ Momos made his debut in the day’s first race, a $72,000 5-1/2 furlong dash on the dirt. Taking the lead shortly after the break and never looking back, he drew away in the stretch and scored by 6-1/2 lengths over Mo Mischief, who chased him from start to finish. The victory was worth $39,600 to the 2-year-old colt by Distorted Humor, trained by Christophe Clement. In the sixth race, worth $72,000 at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf, sons of Cairo Prince were one-two as Glenn Del Russo’s Zippy Baby came from off the pace, slipped inside fellow OBS March graduate Nautilus in deep stretch and beat him to the wire by half a length. It was the third start for the 2-year-old colt gelding, trained by Dermot Magner, now 3-1-2-0 with $65,200 in earnings. Consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. Crawford Farms Racing’s Archidust stalked pacesetting fellow OBS graduate American Sailor (April ’14) down the backstretch in Monmouth’s $82,500 Wolf Hill Stakes, chased him relentlessly down the stretch and ran past him late to win by a length and a quarter. It’s the fourth stakes win for the 2019 OBS Sprint Stakes winner, now trained by Steve Asmussen, leaving him with a 13-6-1-3 career record and $308,400 in earnings. Andreas Psarras’ Mother of Dragons took command after dueling for the early lead in the $65,450 California Governor’s Handicap at Pleasanton, took over for good turning for home then held on gamely to score by a nose. That’s two stakes wins for the 6-year-old Florida-bred daughter of First Dude, sold as a yearling for $3,000 by Beth Bayer, Agent, at the 2015 OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Trained by her owner, she’s now 12-6-1-3 and has earned $153,495 to date.
Paul P. Pompa Jr.’s Country Grammer slipped through on the rail to go after the leaders turning for home in Thursday’s $100,000 Peter Pan Stakes (G3) on opening day at Saratoga. Headed after taking a short lead inside the eighth pole, he came again in the final yards and was best by a neck at the wire. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old colt by Tonalist, now 5-2-0-1 with earnings of $117,320 for trainer Chad Brown. Kevin Marko, Last Call Racing Partnership, Union Park Thoroughbreds, LLC and Cherrywood Racing Stables II’s Summer Assault sat just off the pace in the $100,000 Mystic Lake Derby, came between horses to go after the leaders in the lane and scored by a length over fellow OBS graduate Angelus Warrior, who got up late for second. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old gelding by Summer Front, trained by Michele Boyce, now 6-3-1-1 with $96,900 in earnings. WSS Racing LLC and Hooties Racing LLC’s Ask Bailey scored her first stakes win in the $50,000 Northbound Pride Oaks, trailing early, circling horses on the turn to reach contention, taking charge a furlong from home and drawing away to a 4-1/4 length victory. The graded stakes placed 3-year-old daughter of Run Away and Hide was purchased for $80,000 out of the Randy Miles consignment at the 2019 Spring Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show. Carolyn Wilson’s Wellabled took the lead at the start of the $50,000 Honor the Hero Stakes and never looked back, turning back a challenge in the lane and scoring by half a length in a course record :54.77 for five furlongs on turf. It’s the fourth stakes win for the 6-year-old son of Shackleford, trained by Larry Rivelli, now 15-8-2-1 with earnings of $334,572. Consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. Hip No. 1027, a son of Distorted Humor consigned by McKathan Bros. Sales, Agent, went to West Bloodstock, Agent for Robert E. & Lawana Low for $700,000 to top the final session as well as the entire Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 July Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat at Sunday’s Under Tack session, is out of Tizacity, by Tizway, a daughter of stakes winner Vindy City.
For the session, 179 two-year-olds sold for a total of $6,396,700, compared with 186 grossing $7,510,100 at last year’s third session. The average was $35,736, compared with $40,377 a year ago, while the median price was $15,000, compared to $17,000 in 2019. The buyback percentage was 18.3%; it was 15.8% last year.
Four older horses sold for $42,000 compared to nine bringing $69,200 in 2019.
For the entire sale, 517 two-year-olds sold for $15,830,800 compared with 615 horses grossing $21,349,300 a year ago. The average was $30,621, compared to $34,714 a year while the median price was $13,000 compared with $17,000 in 2019. The buyback percentage was 20.5%; it was 18.7% last year.

Morton, for $270,000 to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 July Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age. The chestnut filly, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was the fastest at the distance at Thursday’s Under Tack session, is out of Exotic Design, by A.P. Indy, a daughter of grade one stakes winner Exotic Wood and a full sister to stakes winner Key to Power.
For the session, 155 horses sold for a total of $3,869,800, compared with 225 grossing $7,719,700 at last year’s second session. The average was $24,966 compared with $34,310 a year ago, while the median price was $13,000, compared to $17,500 in 2019. The buyback percentage was 25.7%; it was 17.3% last year.
The July Sale continues Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Hip No.’s 721 – 1114 will be offered.

Hip No. 15, Shack’s Lil Mishap, a daughter of Shackleford consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, went to Donato Lanni, Agent, for $375,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 July Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age. The bay filly, whose quarter in :20 4/5 was the fastest work at the distance at Monday’s Under Tack session, is out of Peace Queen, by Indian Charlie, a half sister to graded stakes winner Tizaqueena.
For the session, 147 horses grossed $4,788,800, compared with 204 selling for a total of $6,119,500 at last year’s first session. The average was $32,577 compared with $29,998 a year ago, while the median price was $13,000, compared to $17,500 in 2019. The buyback percentage was 32.6%; it was 22.4.% last year.

The 2020 OBS July Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training & Horses of Racing Age is set for Tuesday through Thursday, July 14th – July 16th with all sessions beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Hip No’s 1- 360 will be sold on Tuesday, Hip No’s 361- 720 will be offered Wednesday and Hip No.’s 721- 1114 will sell on Thursday. The catalog is available in the OBS website at obssales.com and in printed form at the sales grounds. Hip No.’s 1 – 1003 are in the main book, Supplements 1004 – 1107 are in a separate catalog. A third brochure contains additional supplements 993 and 1108 – 1114.
At Wednesday’s Under Tack session, Hip No. 383, a son of Half Ours consigned by Blue River Bloodstock, Inc., Agent, turned in the Under Tack Show’s fastest quarter, stopping the timer in :20 1/5.
