Collected captures Santa Anita’s Sham Stakes

Speedway Stable LLC’s Collected was hung out to dry around the first turn of the $100, 750 Sham Stakes (G3) on Saturday at Santa Anita, finally took command at the quarter pole and cruised from there to a length and a quarter victory. Switching to the dirt after a second place finish in the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes on the Del Mar turf course, the 3-year-old colt by City Zip, trained by Bob Baffert, is now 3-2-1-0 and has earned $111,200 to date. Consigned by SGV Thoroughbreds (Steven Venosa), Agent, to the 2015 OBS March Sale, he was purchased by Speedway Stable for $170,000 after turning in an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Winning Stables, Inc. and Midnight Rider LLC’s Fast Flying Rumor took the lead at the start of Saturday’s $90,000 Turf Dash Stakes and never looked back, opening up and winning by 4-3/4 lengths, running five furlongs in a swift :55 flat. It’s the second stakes win for the 4-year-old Florida-bred gelding by West Acre, trained by Gerald Bennett, now 15-5-5-0 with $180,795 in earnings. He breezed an eighth in :10 flat at the 2104 OBS June Sale before he was sold for $35,000 by Texhoma, Inc. (Flint Fesmire), Agent. watch his under tack video

Winter Mixed Sale’s Racing Age supplements now online

Supplements to the Horses of Racing Age section of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2016 Winter Mixed Sale are now online on the OBS website at http://obssales.com. A printed catalog of the supplemented horses is now available at the OBS Sales office.

The online catalog’s main page contains a link to a sortable master index providing searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed. The main page also contains links to complete information regarding the Repository and updated Conditions of Sale, effective at the Winter Mixed Sale and all future OBS auctions.

The iPad version of the catalog is available via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The App allows users to download and view the catalog, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capabilities. For information and downloads visit: http://www.equineline.com/SalesCatalogApp/

The 46 horses supplemented to the Racing Age section  bring the total to 115, including 28 older horses, 54 three-year-olds and 33 two-year-olds, cataloged as Hip No’s 525 – 639. The optional Under Tack Show is scheduled for Monday, January 25th at 10:00 a.m.

Graded stakes winner Reporting Star will sell as Hip No. 639. The 6-year-old gelding by Circular Quay, winner of Woodbine’s Play the King Stakes (G2) in June, comes into the sale off a victory in the El Prado at Gulfstream in December with earnings of $589,546.

Miss Margaret (Hip No. 621), a 4-year-old stakes placed filly by Bwana Charlie, was on the board in the Honey Ryder and Sanibel Island Stakes at Gulfstream last year.

Hip No 593, One More Shot, 3-year-old colt by Trappe Shot, will be offered on the heels of an impressive eight length victory at first asking in a Maiden Special Weight test on December 23.

Hip No. 555, Time Will Tell, a colt by Malibu Moon out of stakes placed What Time Is It, was second in an Aqueduct Maiden Special Weight in his only start on December 19th.

Harbor Pilot, Hip No.577, 3-year-old half brother to stakes winner Tensas Harbor, won at first asking at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, January 10th.

Lillie’s Answer (Hip No. 623), broke her maiden at first asking last summer. The 4-year-old daughter of Kitten’s Joy was third in a Tampa Bay turf allowance on January 2nd in her only other start.

The 2-year-olds include Hip No. 534, Tizuis or Tizuaint, a half brother by Tizdejavu to stakes winner Mellow Fellow; Hip No. 553, Wing and Wheel, a colt by Wilburn, a half brother to graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS graduate Devil’s Cave; Hip No 569, filly by Majestic Warrior out of multiple graded stakes winner Ebony Breeze, and Hip No. 581, a half brother to stakes winner Westmoreland Girl by Kantharos.

A total of 522 horses are cataloged for the Preferred and Open sessions of the Sale, scheduled to begin Wednesday, January 27th with Hip Numbers 1 – 230 selling in the Consignor Preferred session.

Hip Numbers 231 – 524 in the Open Session will be offered Thursday, January 28th followed immediately by Horses of Racing Age section.

Both sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. As always, the sale and Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website and the Blood-Horse and DRF websites.

The OBS Championship Stakes races, run this year again in conjunction with the Winter Mixed Sale, are set for Tuesday, January 26th, with first post at 1:00 p.m.

Four OBS graduates named Eclipse Award finalists

Four OBS Two-Year-Old Sale graduates have been chosen as Eclipse Award finalists for their accomplishments in 2015. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Saturday, January 16th at Gulfstream Park.  

John C. Oxley’s Airoforce, a finalist in the 2-year-old male division, launched his juvenile campaign with a win at first asking for trainer Mark Casse in a maiden special weight test on the turf at Kentucky Downs in September. A month later he scored in the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (G3) on grass at Keeneland before he just missed by a neck in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). He wrapped up the year in style, switching to the main track and taking the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Down by a length and a half.  The colt by Colonel John sped a quarter in :21 flat before he was purchased for $350,000 out of the Richardson Bloodstock consignment at the 2015 OBS April Sale. He enters 2016  with a 4-3-1-0  record and has earned $516,080 to date. watch his under tack video

Two previous OBS graduates have won the Eclipse Award as juvenile champion. Gilded Time was a winner in 1992 and Favorite Trick won the award in 1997.

Ranlo Investments LLC’s female sprint finalist Lady Shipman served notice of things to come in January, when she returned to OBS and took the filly division of the OBS Sprint Stakes in track record time. Campaigned by trainer Kathleen O’Connell, she scored five more stakes victories; one at Pimlico, two at Monmouth Park and two at Saratoga, culminating in a course record 1:00 2/5 for 5-1/2 furlongs on the Saratoga turf course. In her final start of the year, she came charging late but settled for second by a neck in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) against males at Keeneland. She ended the year with a 12-8-2-2 record and earnings of $538,800.  Consigned by Pleasant Acres Farm, Agent, to the 2014 OBS April Sale, she sped an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

OBS graduates Jewel Princess (1996), Fleet Indian (2006) and Ginger Punch (2007) won Eclipse Awards in the Older Female division.  Town & Country Farms’ Stopchargingmaria is a finalist to be the fourth. She made five starts in 2015, all in graded stakes company. She won the Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes (G3) at Pimlico in May and the Saratoga’s Shuvee Handicap (G3) in August before closing out the year with a victory in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Keeneland.  Trained by Todd Pletcher, the newly turned 5-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat was acquired from Repole Stables, who purchased her for $220,000 out of the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2013 OBS March Sale after she breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show.  Now 16-9-3-1 record, she has amassed $2,924,000 in earnings. watch her under tack video

Ken & Sarah Ramsey’s Stephanie’s Kitten would join Forever Together (2008) as the second OBS graduate honored in the Older Female Turf division. She began the year with a win in the Hillsborough Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs in March and ended it with two grade one victories. The first was at Belmont Park in the Flower Bowl Stakes (G1) in early October followed by a convincing triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1). It was the fifth grade one win for daughter of Kitten’s Joy, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2) in 2011 and runner-up in the Filly and Mare Turf (G1) last year. Trained by Chad Brown, she retired with nine graded stakes wins, a 25-11-4-4 record and earnings of $4,292,904. She was consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, to the 2011 OBS April Sale where she turned in an eighth in :11 flat at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

Forever Darling scores in Santa Anita’s Santa Ynez Stakes

Richard Baltas, Hebert Bloodstock and J K Racing LLC’s Forever Darling joined the ranks of graded stakes winners on Saturday at Santa Anita, battling down the stretch between rivals and taking the $200, 500 Santa Ynez Stakes (G3) by half a length. It’s the first stakes score for the 3-year-old filly by Congrats, trained by Richard Baltas, now 4-2-0-0 with earnings of $155,400. Consigned by Old South Farm LLC, Agent, to the 2015 OBS April Sale, she breezed an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack work

BB Horses’ Sweet On Smokey picked up her first stakes win in the $75,000 What a Summer Stakes on Saturday at Laurel, taking over on the turn for home and easing away from there to a 2-1/2 length victory. The 4-year-old daughter of Succcessful Appeal worked a quarter in :21 3/5 at the Under Tack Show prior to the 2014 OBS April Sale before she was sold by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, for $20,000. Trained by Claudio Gonzalez, she’s now 23-7-4-4 and has earned $216,470 to date. watch her under tack work

Clark O. Brewster’s Bayerd rallied to take command of Saturday’s $60,000 Bonapaw Stakes at Fair Grounds a furlong from home and scored by a length over fellow OBS graduate Attain (January ’14, June ’13). That’s three stakes wins for the graded stakes placed 4-year-old colt by Speightstown, trained by Steve Asmussen, now 14-4-6-2 with $486,900 in earnings. King Kranz captures Aqueduct’s Lost in the Fog Stakes

Zayat Stables’ King Kranz picked a fine spot to break his maiden and celebrate the New Year, taking charge of Friday’s $122, 500 Lost in the Fog Stakes at Aqueduct after turning for home and posting a one length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Sallisaw (March ’15) settled for third. Second in the Futurity (G2) at Belmont in October, the 3-year-old colt by Munnings, trained by JohnTerranova, is now 6-1-2-3 and has earned $146,990 to date. He was purchased for $95,000 by Patrice Miller, EQB Inc. on behalf of Zayat Stables out of the Bobby Dodd consignment at the 2015 OBS March Sale after working an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

West Point Thoroughbreds’ Empire Dreams came from off the pace in Aqueduct’s $100,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes on New Year’s Eve, reached the leaders in the stretch and fought to victory in the final yards by a head. It’s the fifth stakes victory for the now 5-year-old son of Patriot Act, consigned to the 2013 OBS April Sale by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, and purchased by West Point for $35,000 after he breezed an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5. Roger G. Smith’s Smitty’s Cougar ended her 2-year-old season with a flourish, taking the lead at the start of Thursday’s $95,770 Louisiana Futurity and romping to a 9-3/4 length victory. It’s the first stakes win for the daughter of Half Ours, trained by Ron Faucheux, leaving her 5-3-0-2 with $118,312 in earnings. Extinct Charm takes Aqueduct’s Damon Runyon Stakes

John L. Moirano, William Achenbaum, Monty Foss and Steven Wecker’s Extinct Charm scored his first stakes win on Saturday at Aqueduct, coming from just off the pace in the $98, 000 Damon Runyon Stakes and proving best by a neck in a four horse blanket finish. Fellow OBS graduate Taoiseach (April ’15) settled for third. The 2-year-old colt by American Lion was purchased by trainer Gary Contessa for $55,000 out of the Shooting Star Sales consignment at the 2015 OBS April Sale after an Under Tack quarter in :21 3/5.  The first stakes winner for his sire, he’s now 9-2-2-1 with earnings of $143,054 and being pointed for the 2016 OBS Championship Stakes on January 26th.  watch his under tack video

J and J Stables’ Jewel of a Cat put her head in front turning for home in Sunday’s $75,000 Windley Key Stakes at Gulfstream then held off challengers on both sides down the stretch, winning by a neck. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 5-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Wildcat Heir and the sixth of her career. Trained by Carlos Vaccarezza, she’s now 23-6-7-2 and has earned $435,695 to date.  She was sold for $40,000 by Bo Hunt, Agent, at the 2012 OBS April Sale after she breezed an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show.  watch her under tack video

Gelfenstein Farm’s X Y Jet gave nothing else a chance in Saturday’s $102, 000 Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park, taking the lead right from the start, opening a long lead on the turn and coasting home a winner by 9-1/4 lengths. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Kantharos, trained by Jorge Navarro, now 12-4-5-1 with earnings of $214,863. Long Lake Stable LLC and Beacon Hill Thoroughbreds LLC’s Tammy the Torpedo rallied to hook up with front running fellow OBS graduate Celestine (June ’14) down the stretch of Gulfstream’s $80,250 Tropical Park Oaks and was best by a neck at the wire. The 3-year-old graded stakes placed daughter of More Than Ready picked up her first stakes win, improved her record to 6-3-0-1 and boosted her bankroll to $164,500. After working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show prior to the OBS April Sale, she was sold for $225,000 by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent. watch her under tack video 

Unbeaten Elfin Cove impressive in Japan

Kazuko Yoshida’s unbeaten filly Elfin Cove is turning heads in Japan after beating the boys, taking the lead at the break on Saturday at Hanshin Race Course and drawing away in the stretch en route to an easy victory. (race video) The 2-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Adios Charlie, now two for two with $118,182 in earnings was consigned by Ocala Stud to the 2015 OBS March Sale, and sold to Narvick International for $675,000 after breezing a quarter in :20 3/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

Xpress Thoroughbreds LLC’s Discreetness scored his first stakes win on Sunday at Remington Park, circling horses on the turn, closing down the stretch and getting up in the last  jump to take the $275,000 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes by a nose. It’s the third win for the 2-year-old colt by Discreet Cat, who breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5 before being sold for $105,000 by Royal Thoroughbred International at the 2015 OBS March Sale. Trained by William Fires, he’s now 5-3-0-0 and has earned $192,122 to date. watch his under tack video

Keith Plaisance’s Pacific Pink added the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Ladies Stakes to her resume on Saturday at Fair Grounds, fighting her way between horses in deep stretch to take command and winning by three quarters of a length. It’s the fourth stakes win of the year for the 3-year-old daughter of Private Vow, now 10-6-2-2 with $291,300 in earnings for trainer Edward Johnston. Consigned by Robert Brewer to the 2014 OBS April Sale, she was sold to Nick Hines, Agent, for $90,000 after turning in an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

There are 340 yearlings in the sale by a large and diverse group of sires. Medaglia d’Oro heads a roster of established stallions, a group that also includes Curlin, Scat Daddy, Uncle Mo, Into Mischief, Tale of the Cat, Stormy Atlantic, Congrats, Majesticperfection and Wildcat Heir.

Bodemeister heads the group of promising young sires with yearlings in the sale, a list that also includes Point of Entry, The Factor, Paynter, Take Charge Indy, Shanghai Bobby, Tapizar, To Honor and Serve, Violence as well as Florida-based, Treasure Beach (GB), Big Drama, Frist Dude, Soldat and Adios Charlie.

Broodmare buyers will find mares in foal to a strong group of promising stallions including Oxbow, Gemologist, Graydar, Twirling Candy, Morning Line, Overanalyze, Sidney’s Candy, Tizway, Data Link and Itsmyluckyday. Up and coming Florida-based Factum, Fort Larned, Rattlesnake Bridge, Uncaptured, Poseidon’s Warrior, Gone Astray, He’s Had Enough and Winslow Homer are also represented.

Proven sires Mineshaft, Munnings, Lookin At Lucky are also represented along with Florida-based Two Step Salsa, With Distinction and Kantharos.

Airoforce wins Churchill’s Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes

John C. Oxley’s Airoforce moved to the main track after settling for second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf G1), came wide into the stretch of Churchill Downs’ $200, 000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) and drew away late to win his second graded stakes race by a length and a half. Morris Bailey’s Full Salute relaxed in the early going of Saturday’s $75,000 Buffalo Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park West, moved on the turn to reach contention and then rallied down the lane to win by a length. It’s the second stakes win for the 2-year-old son of Speightstown, now 7-3-3-0 for trainer Eddie Plesa, Jr., with earnings of $199,295.  He was consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, to the 2015 OBS march Sale where he breezed a quarter in :21 1/5 a the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Warner Thoroughbreds et al’s Swagger Jagger came off the fence to look for room at the top of the stretch in the $75,000 Pulpit Stakes at Gulfstream Park West, came after the leaders on the outside and was up in the final strides to win by a neck. It’s the first stakes win for the 2-year-old Florida-bred colt by Crown of Thorns, who worked a quarter in :21 4/5 before being purchased for $77,000 out of the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2015 OBS April Sale.
