A pair of colts consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, sped quarters in :20 3/5 to post the fastest works at the distance at the first session of the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2016 March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training.

Hip No. 92, a bay colt by Super Saver, is out of stakes winner Lunargal, by Yes It’s True, a half sister to graded stakes winners Lunarpal and freshman sire Astrology.

Hip No. 101, a dark bay or brown colt by War Front, is out of grade one stakes winner and champion Maryfield, by Elusive Quality.

Six horses turned in quarters in :20 4/5, four of them consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent.

Hip No. 13, a bay Giant’s Causeway filly, is out of High On the Hill, by Fusaichi Pegasus, a half sister to graded stakes winner Lil’s Lad. Hip No. 31, a bay colt by Quality Road, is out of stakes placed Inventive, by Dixie Union. Hip No. 87, a bay colt by Ghostzapper out of Little Swoon, by You and I, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Melmich. Hip No. 97 is a bay filly by Pioneerof the Nile out of Malibu Clan, by Malibu Moon, a half sister to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Cinco Charlie, winner of the recent Duncan F. Kenner stakes at Fair Grounds.

Hip No. 163, a chestnut colt by Trappe Shot consigned by Doble Jak LLC, Agent, is out of Orient Shopper, by Orientate, a half sister to graded stakes winner Put It Back.

Hip No. 200, consigned by Journeyman Bloodstock Services, Inc. (Brent & Crystal Fernung), Agent, is a bay colt by Caleb’s Posse out of stakes placed Readybdancing, by More Than Ready.

Fourteen youngsters shared honors for the session’s fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :9 4/5.

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company notes with sadness the passing of Norman E. Casse, 79, after a long illness. A co-founder of OBS in 1974, he served as chairman of the OBS board for 28 years until stepping down in 2006. Casse owned and operated Cardinal Hill Farm for many years and served as chairman of the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers, helping set black-type catalog standards. During his tenure at the helm of the OBS board, the company grew from regional to international status, and added OBS Feed & Supply and the Inter Track Wagering facility to its operations.

Among the many horses he sold at OBS were Breeders’ Cup winner and champion Gilded Time, multiple graded stakes winner Lost Code, who earned over $2-million at the races and Melbourne Cup (G1) winner Beldale Ball. He was also responsible for breeding and selling graded stakes winners Hi Friend Code, Isitingood and Ifyoucouldseemenow.

“Norman Casse was a true pioneer of our sport and left a rich legacy,” said present OBS board chairman Michael J. O’Farrell. “He was as proud of the growth of OBS as he was for the success of his children. He wore his heart on his sleeve and was always there for someone in need regardless of their social status. He will be missed.”

A memorial will be held at OBS on Sunday, March 13, at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Martez Hawkins Fund, 6851 Southwest 66th St., Ocala, FL, 34476.

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2016 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Wednesday, March 9^th.

The Under Tack Show will span three days, beginning on Wednesday with Hips 1 – 204. Hips 205 – 408 will go Thursday, March 10^th and Hips 409 – 613 will go Friday, March 11^th. All three sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF and Blood-Horse websites.

A total of 613 juveniles were cataloged for the two-day sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15^th and 16^th, with both sessions beginning at 11:00 a.m. Hip 1 – 306 will sell on Tuesday; Hips 307 – 613 will sell on Wednesday.

The OBS March Sale has long had a major impact the highest levels of the game, producing six champions, 23 millionaires and the winners of seven Breeders’ Cup races, the most recent a victory by catalog cover girl Stopchargingmaria in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). She’s one of six March graduates accounting for grade one wins in 2015. Highlights of the past year included Carpe Diem’s victory in the Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes (G1), Secret Circle beating the world’s best sprinters in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) and 2015 sale graduate Gomo scoring in the prestigious Alcibiades Stakes (G1) in the fall. Overseas, 2015 graduate Acapulco captured the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at Ascot and followed that effort with a narrow defeat, finishing second against older horses in the Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at York. Last week, 2014 graduate Moanin joined the millionaire ranks with a victory in the February Stakes (G1) at Tokyo Race Track.

Overall, since the beginning of 2015, March graduates have won or placed in 176 stakes races, accounting for 29 graded stakes wins.

Also trained by Todd Pletcher, the daughter of Tale of the Cat was acquired from Repole Stables, who purchased her for $220,000 out of the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2013 OBS March Sale after she breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Michael E. Pegram , Karl Watson, Paul Weitman’s  2011 March Sale graduate Secret Circle,  who beat the world’s  best sprinters at four in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), returned in 2015 and did it again in the $2,000,000 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1)  at Meydan. It was the fourth graded stakes win for the 6-year-old colt by Eddington, trained by Bob Baffert. It was his final start, retiring to stud with a 16-8-6-1 record and $3,670,790 in earnings. He worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 before he was sold for $165,000 by Flying Fish, Agent, at the 2011 OBS March Sale.  watch his under tack video

WinStar Farm LLC and Stonestreet Stables LLC’s Carpe Diem joined the millionaire ranks in 2015 with his three length victory in Keeneland’s $1,000,000 Blue Grass Stakes (G1). It was the third graded stakes win for the colt by Giant’s Causeway, trained by Todd Pletcher. He went to stud this year with a 6-4-1-0 and earnings of $1,519,800. After working an eighth in:10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show prior to the 2014 OBS March Sale, he was purchased out of the Northwest Stud consignment for a co-sale topping $1.6-million. watch his under tack video

Gary Barber’s Jack Milton earned his grade one stripes in April with a victory in the $300,000 Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes (G1) on the Keeneland turf course. It was the third graded stakes win for the son of War Front, another Todd Pletcher trainee, who wrapped up the year with a 19-5-2-5 record and $853,938 in earnings. Reddam Racing’s Gomo was a 2-3/4 length winner of the $400,000 Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keeneland in October. Trained by Doug O’Neill, the daughter of Uncle Mo was purchased by Dennis O’Neill for $75,000 out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2015 OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show.
