OBS Yearling Sale moving to October in 2017

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company has announced that its 2017 Yearling Sale will be moved from August to October. The Selected Yearling Sale is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10th with the Open Yearling Sale to be held Wednesday and Thursday, October 11th and 12th.  The Winter Mixed Sale will remain in its customary slot in January.

“Finding the most beneficial dates in a crowded yearling sale calendar is a little tricky,” said OBS president Tom Ventura. “Based on our feedback, we believe the October time slot offers a better overall fit for both consignors and buyers. Consolidating our Mixed Sales into January provides us the flexibility to shift the Yearling Sale to October. Moving the sale from August to the milder October weather will be a plus for buyers, consignors and horses. An additional side benefit of the new dates is the extra time after our Two Year Old sales to move our construction project along.”

Shane’s Girlfriend scores in the Delta Downs Princess Stakes

ERJ Racing LLC, W.C. Racing & Dennis O’Neill’s Shane’s Girlfriend is two for two and a graded stakes winner after taking command of Saturday’s $400,000 Delta Downs Princess Stakes (G3) on the  turn and romping from there to a 13-1/4 length victory. The 2-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Adios Charlie turned in an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5 at the 2016 OBS June Sale’s Under Tack Show and was purchased by Dennis O’Neill for $95,000 from breeder Ocala Stud. Live Oak Plantation’s Let It Ride Mom relaxed well off the pace in Saturday’s $125,000 Glorious Song Stakes at Woodbine, but the 2-year-old filly by Into Mischief rallied wide on the turn, took charge a furlong from home and held off a late run to win by half a length. Trained by Mark Casse, her first stakes victory leaves her with a 4-2-2-0 record and earnings of $123,106. Consigned to the 2016 OBS March Sale by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, she breezed an eighth in :9 4/5 before she  was purchased by Live Oak for $375,000.  watch her under tack video 

MMG Stables LLC’s El Areeb jumped from an October maiden win into Laurel’s $100,000 James F. Lewis III Stakes on Saturday and led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep, taking the lead at the start and staying there all the way, cruising home by 5-1/4 lengths. Two Charley’s (April ’16, August ’15) was second; High Roller (April ’16, August ’15) checked in third. Trained by Cathal Lynch, the 2-year-old colt by Exchange Rate is now 4-1-2-0 and has earned $94,200. Consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, to the 2016 OBS March Sale, he breezed an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show before being purchased by MMG for $340,000. watch his under tack video 

Gelfenstein Farm’s Sharp Azteca took the lead at the start of the $100,000 City of Laurel Stakes on Saturday and never looked back, drawing away in the stretch to a 5-1/4 length victory. It’s the second stakes score for the graded stakes winning two time OBS graduate, sold by Select Sales at the 2014 August Sale before he was purchased for $220,000 at the 2015 April Sale by Gelfenstein Farm from de Meric Sales, Agent for Golden Legacy Stables, after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. The 3-year-old son of Freud, trained by Jorge Navarro, is now 8-4-2-0 with $306,250 in earnings. watch his under tack video 

Michael R. Cox’s Rockin Jojo rallied wide into the stretch of Saturday’s $75,000 Geisha Stakes at Laurel, then closed strongly to get up in the final strides and win by a head. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 4-year-old daughter of Street Magician, trained by Guadalupe Preciado, now 18-5-3-4 with earnings of $289,012. Consigned by Best a Luck Farm LLC, Agent, to the 2014 OBS April Sale, she worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. watch her under tack video

St. George Stable LLC’s Wildcat Wish picked up his first stakes win on Saturday in the $75,000 Sam’s Town Stakes at Delta Downs charging down the stretch and getting up late to win by a head. Trained by Efren Loza, Jr., the 3-year-old Florida-bred gelding is now 16-4-5-4 and has earned $186,715 to date. A two time OBS graduate, he was sold by Beth Bayer, Agent, at the 2014 Winter Mixed Sale, and later purchased for $95,000 out of the Shamrock Stables consignment at the 2015 April Sale after an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. watch his under tack video 

Driver, Ywachetta and Travis’ Rivers Run Deep led from wire to wire and won Saturday’s $75,000 Cardinal Handicap at Mahoning Valley Race Course by 3-1/4 lengths. Fellow OBS graduate Candy Bites (April ’12) settled for third. It’s the sixth win in seven starts this year for the 5-year-old son of Ready’s Image, sold for $77,000 to Garry Simms, Agent for James Driver, by Rod McVey, Agent, at the 2013 OBS June Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 3/5 at the Under Tack Show. Mr. Jordan takes the Millions Classic Preview in track record time

David Melin, Leon Ellman and Laurie Plesa’s Mr. Jordan relaxed just off the leaders in the $100,000 Millions Classic Preview Stakes at Gulfstream Park West on Saturday, moved to take charge a furlong from home then dew off to win by 3-3/4 lengths in a track record 1:42.52 for the mile and a sixteenth. Fellow OBS graduate Saraguaro (April ’14, August ’13) checked in third. It’s the fourth stakes win for the graded stakes winning 4-year-old Florida-bred colt by Kantharos, trained by Eddie Plesa, and leaves him with a 17-6-4-5 record and $513,735 in earnings. A two time OBS graduate, he was sold by Summerfield, Agent, at the 2013 August Sale and then purchased by trainer Eddie Plesa for $155,000 out of the de Meric Sales consignment at the 2014 April Sale after working a quarter in :21 2/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Averill Racing LLC and CCF Racing Stable’s R Angel Katelyn stepped into stakes company for the first time in Gulfstream Park West’s $100,000 Juvenile Filly Sprint Stakes and handled the jump in class with ease, tracking the leader into the stretch then wearing her down and scoring by half a length. That’s two wins in three starts for the 2-year-old Florida-bred daughter of High Cotton, who breezed and Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before she was purchased for $50,000 out of the Craig L. Wheeler consignment at the 2016 OBS June Sale. Trained by Gerald Bennett, she’s now 3-2-1-0 and has earned $87,120. watch her under tack video

Four Horsemen Racing Stable, Inc. and Lady Lindsay Racing Stables’ Sweetontheladies picked up his first stakes victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Juvenile Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park West, charging from off the pace, running past the leaders a sixteenth from home and scoring by three lengths over fellow OBS graduate Storming My Way (March ’16, January ’15). It’s the third win in four trips to the post for the 2-year-old Florida-bred colt by Twirling Candy, trained by Henry Collazo, now 4-3-0-0 with earnings of $119,342. Pinnacle Racing Stable and Norman Stables’ Moment of Delight took the lead at the start of Gulfstream Park West’s $100,000 Millions Distaff Preview Stakes and stayed there to the wire, holding off a late run by fellow OBS graduate You Bought Her (April ’12) by half a length. It’s the third stakes win for the 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by A. P. Warrior, who turned in an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show before she was sold for $58,000 to Pinnacle Racing by Southern Cypress Stable, Agent, at the 2014 OBS April Sale. Chadds Ford Stable’s Dancing Rags stepped into Keeneland’s Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1) straight off a September maiden victory at Laurel and handled the raise in class with ease, taking command in the stretch and holding off a late run to win by a length. The 2-year-old filly by Union Rags is the eleventh OBS graduate to win the Alcibiades and the seventh in the past eight years. Trained by Graham Motion, she was consigned by Casse Sales LLC (Justin Casse), Agent for Kinsman Farm, to the 2016 OBS March Sale, where she breezed an eighth in :10 flat before she was sold to Chadds Ford Stable for $210,000. watch her under tack video

Speedway Stable LLC’s Noted and Quoted made five starts at two for trainer Bob Baffert, with her biggest moment coming when she captured Santa Anita’s Chandelier Stakes (G1) in September. James A. Bryan, Jr.’s Celestine was a six time stakes winner since the 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy, consigned by Gayle Woods on behalf of Mr. Bryan’s Phaedrus Flights to the 2014 OBS June Sale, breezed three eighths in :32 2/5 at the Under Tack Show, the sale’s fastest work at the distance. She posted five stakes wins, highlighted by her 3-3/4 length victory in Belmont’s Just a Game Stakes (G1) in June, running the mile on the turf in 1:31.63, one hundredth of a second off Elusive Quality’s 1996 track record. Trained by Bill Mott, she earned over $800,000 and was sold as a racing or broodmare prospect for $2,550,000. Moanin – a grade one stakes winner in Japan of over $1.9-million

Moanin February Stakes grade 1 winner in Japan February 2016Yukio Baba’s Moanin has won six of his nine starts in Japan since he was purchased at the 2014 OBS March Sale out of the Eddie Woods consignment for $335, 000 on behalf of Mr. Baba by Emmanuel de Seroux’s Narvick International after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. The biggest win for the 4-year-old colt by Henny Hughes was his 1-1/4 length victory in the $1,683,438 February Stakes (G1) at Tokyo Race Course in a track record 1:34 for the 1600 meters. (video) Trained by Sei Ishizaka, he has earned over $1.9-million to date.  watch his under tack video

Kaleem Shah’s Klimt is a two time graded stakes winner since his purchase at the 2016 OBS March Sale. After breaking his maiden at Santa Anita, he jumped into the Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar and was a 2-3/4 length winner. He followed that victory with a 4-1/4 length win in the Del Mar Futurity. He’s trained by Bob Baffert, who purchased him for $435,000 on Mr. Shah’s behalf out of the Eddie Woods consignment after he sped a quarter in :20 4/5 at the March Sale Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Ciaglia Racing, Exline-Border, Gulliver Racing, Sharon Alesia, Christensen, and Legan’s Champagne Room, overlooked at 33-1, moved up to take command of the $1,841,380 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at the top of the stretch, opened up daylight a furlong from home and cruised from there to a three quarter length victory. It’s the second graded stakes win for the 2-year-old daughter of Broken Vow, trained by Peter Eurton, now 5-2-1-1 and the newest OBS millionaire graduate with $1,386,600 in earnings. She was purchased for $310,000 by Larry Zap, Agent for Joseph Ciaglia, Jr. out of the de Meric Sales consignment at the 2016 April Sale after speeding a quarter in :20 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

Champagne Room’s April Sale auction footage

It was the second trip to the Juvenile Fillies (G1) with an OBS graduate for Mr. Ciaglia and Peter Eurton. They finished third in 2011 with Weemissfrankie, trained by Eurton and owned by Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stables, Ciaglia Racing, LLC and Rob Dyrdek. The daughter of Sunriver, a two time grade one winner of $559,920, went through the ring in the 2010 August Sale before she was purchased at the April Sale. .

Champagne Room is the fourth OBS graduate to win the Juvenile Fillies (G1). February graduate Brave Raj won the 1986 renewal and Stardom Bound (March ‘08) and She Be Wild (April ’09) scored consecutive victories in 2008 and 2009.
