Mitole scores in Pimlico’s Chick Lang Stakes

William & Corrine Heiligbrodt’s Mitole gave nothing else a chance in Saturday’s $200,000 Chick Lang Stakes at Pimlico, taking the lead shortly after the break, opening a long lead in the lane and coasting home to a 6-1/4 length victory. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Eskendereya, now 7-4-2-1 for trainer Steve Asmussen with earnings of $348,710. LNJ Foxwoods and NK Racing’s Explorer made his debut in a $55,725 Maiden Special Weight test on Friday at Santa Anita and got his career off to an impressive start, going right to the front and never looking back en route to a four length win. Blended Citizen takes Belmont’s Peter Pan Stakes

Greg Hall and Sayjay Racing LLC’s Blended Citizen warmed up for a run at the Belmont Stakes (G1), charging wide on the turn to reach contention in Saturday’s $350,000 Peter Pan Stakes (G3) at Belmont, taking command inside the sixteenth pole and easing away to a 1-1/2 length victory. It’s the second graded stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Proud Citizen, purchased for $85,000 out of the Wavertree Stables (Ciaran Dunne) consignment at the 2017 OBS March Sale after he breezed an Under Tack quarter in :22 1/5. Kent Spellman’s Kirby’s Penny tried stakes company for the first time in the $200,000 Vagrancy Handicap (G3) on Saturday at Belmont Park, rallied from just off the pace to wear down the leaders in the stretch and won going away by a length and a half. Woodford Racing LLC’s Engage overcame a sluggish start in Sunday’s $90,000 Gold Fever Stakes at Belmont, battled down the stretch in the mud and was best by a nose. Fellow OBS graduate A Different Style (March ’17) finished third. The graded stakes winning 3-year-old colt by Into Mischief, who took Belmont’s Futurity Stakes (G3) at two, is now 5-3-2-0 for trainer Chad Brown and has earned $266,400 to date. June Sale catalog now online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com. The online catalog’s main page contains a link to a sortable master index providing searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed. Advanced search and filter capability has been added to allow shortlist creation. A link to instructions for using the new features can be found in the index header and a step by step tutorial is available in the index as well.

The iPad version of the catalog can be accessed via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The App allows users to download and view the catalog, receive updates and results, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capability. There are 845 two-year-olds and seven older horses cataloged for the three-day sale, with all sessions beginning at 10:00 a.m. Hip No.’s 1 – 300 will sell on Wednesday, June 13^th; Hip No.’s 301 – 600 will be offered on Thursday, June 14^th and Hip No.’s 601 – 852 plus supplements will sell on Friday, June 15^th. Supplemental entries are being accepted until May 23^rd.

There are four Under Tack Sessions. Hip No.’s 1 – 225 will go to the track on Thursday, June 7^th, Hip No.’s 226 – 450 will breeze on Friday, June 8^th, Hip No.’s 451 – 675 work on Saturday, June 9^th, and 676 – 852 plus supplements will go on Sunday, June 10^th. All Under Tack sessions begin at 7:30 a.m.

The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF, TDN and BloodHorse websites.

Ironhorse Racing Stable LLC’s Bucchero is a five time stakes winner. He was consigned by Southern Chase Farm (Greg & Karen Dodd), Agent, to the 2014 OBS June Sale where he sped a quarter in :21 flat at the Under Tack Show. The 6-year-old son of Kantharos, trained by Tim Glyshaw, has earned $789,741 to date and has a 27-10-6-3 career record. His high water mark of the past year was his victory in October in the Woodford Stakes (G2) at Keeneland, and he recently returned to Kentucky to finish second in Keeneland’s Shakertown Stakes (G2) in April and third this past Saturday in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint (G3) on Derby Day at Churchill Downs. watch his under tack video

The 2018 sale boasts the strongest stallion roster in the history of OBS June. Bodemeister and Scat Daddy, the sires of the last two Kentucky Derby winners are represented, as is Candy Ride (ARG) sire of Horse of the Year Gun Runner. The rest of the top 15 on the general sire list have offspring in the sale, including Blame, Curlin, Flatter, Ghostzapper, Hard Spun, Into Mischief, Kitten’s Joy, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, Quality Road, Tapit, and Uncle Mo. As wide as it is deep, the June stallion roster also includes Bernardini, Distorted Humor, Giant’s Causeway, Pioneerof the Nile, Speightstown, Union Rags and War Front.

OBS June graduate Goldencents heads a group of exciting young stallions who’s first crop race in 2018, including Florida-based He’s Had Enough and Uncaptured, who has already sired his first winner. Funny Duck scores in Churchill’s Pat Day Mile

Calumet Farm’s Funny Duck, overlooked at 39-1 in the $300,000 Pat Day Mile Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, stumbled at the start, hit the rail on the backstretch as he moved to the leaders, found room between horses approaching the stretch, took command a furlong from home and drew off to win by 4-3/4 lengths. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Distorted Humor, trained by Rusty Arnold, now 7-2-2-0 with earnings of $214,040. He turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 before he was purchased by Calumet for $110,000 out of the Kirkwood Stables consignment at the 2017 OBS March Sale. watch his under tack video

OBS graduates gave a good account of themselves at Churchill Downs on Oaks and Derby Day. March Sale graduate Instilled Regard was dismissed at 85-1 in the Derby, but the colt by Arch came from well off the pace to finish a credible fourth. Earlier in the day, Warrior’s Club (April ’16) came with a big late run to just miss taking the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2) by a head.

On Oaks day, OBS April graduates Wonder Gadot and Midnight Bisou were second and third in the Kentucky Oaks (G1).

On the Oaks undercard, OBS March graduates Talk Veuve to Me and Gas Station Sushi finished second and third in the Eight Belles Stakes (G2) while Kid Perfect (April ’16) rallied for second in the Twin Spires Turf Stakes (G3), a neck better than Bucchero (June ’14), who settled for third.

Reddam Racing’s Blame the Rider pressed the pace in Saturday’s $191,035 Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita, fought his way down the stretch and was best by a head at the wire. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old son of Jimmy Creed, who sped a quarter in :21 at the Under Tack Show before he was purchased for $320,000 by Dennis O’Neill out of the Thoroughbred Champions Training Center consignment at the 2017 OBS March Sale. Carolyn Wilson’s The Tabulator, idle since the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes (G1) returned to action last Thursday at Prairie Meadows and led from gate to wire in the $50,000 Golden Circle Stakes, drawing away in the stretch to win by six lengths. It’s the third stakes win for the graded stakes winning 3-year-old colt by Dialed In, purchased for $460,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2017 OBS March Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Midnight Bisou heads contingent of six OBS graduates in Kentucky Oaks

Allen Racing LLC and Bloom Racing Stable LLC’s Midnight Bisou heads a contingent of six OBS graduates entered in Friday’s 144^th renewal of the Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute is the 5-2 second choice in the mile and one eighth classic, won previously by OBS graduates Blind Luck and Plum Pretty.

Midnight Bisou comes to the race off a sensational 3-1/2 length victory in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1). She’s won three straight graded stakes, compiled a 5-3-2-0 career record and has earned $450,000. Trained by Bill Spawr, she’ll break from post 10 under Mike Smith. Consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds to the 2017 OBS April Sale, she turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 before she was sold to Jeffrey Bloom for $80,000. watch her under tack video

Peter Deutsch’s consistent Take Charge Paula will break from post nine and be ridden by Jose Ortiz. Craig D. Upham’s Patrona Margarita was a 3-3/4 length winner of Churchill’s Pocahontas Stakes (G2) at two and comes into the Oaks off a third place finish in the Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. The daughter of Special Rate has drawn post twelve, and will be ridden by Ricardo Santana, Jr. for trainer Bret Calhoun. Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Kelly’s Humor captured the Ellis Park Debutante Stakes after breaking her maiden at first asking. The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Horses of Racing Age is now scheduled for three days beginning Wednesday, June 13^th and ending on Friday, June 15^th. There will be four Under Tack sessions, beginning Thursday, June 7^th and running through Sunday, June 10^th.

The change to the Wednesday start date permits horsemen additional travel time after the Belmont Stakes weekend. Supplemental nominations will be accepted through May 23^rd.

Hip No.’s 1 – 300 will sell on Wednesday, June 13^th; Hip No.’s 301 – 600 will be offered on Thursday, June 14^th and Hip No.’s 601 – 852 plus supplements will sell on Friday, June 15^th. Moore Management LLC and Brad Grady’s Mom’s On Strike was circling horses on the turn, surging to the lead a furlong from home drawing off to win Keeneland’s $150,000 Bewitch Stakes (G3) on Friday by 3-1/4 lengths. Records fell by the wayside as the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training reached new levels in gross, average, and median figures. Out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Your Flame in Me, by Boundary, his eighth on Saturday in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance for the session.

For the session, 161 two-year-olds sold for a total of $17,230,500, compared with 144 horses bringing $13,142,200 at the corresponding session last year. The average price was $107,022, up 17.2% compared to $91,265 in 2017 while the median was $57,000, rising 11.8% compared with $51,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 20.3%; it was 22.9% a year ago.

For the entire sale, 707 horses grossed a sale record $69,429,500, compared with 678 youngsters bringing $60,935,900 a year ago, the previous record total. The average price was a sale record $98,203, besting last year’s sale previous record $89,876. The median was a record $55,000, up 15.8% above 2017’s sale record $47,500. The buyback percentage was 17.9%; it was 17% a year ago. Sixty-six horses brought $250,000 or more compared to 60 in 2017.

Records fell by the wayside as the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training reached new levels in gross, average, and median figures. OBS graduates off to a fast start at the races

OBS graduates are off to a fast start at the races, with three youngsters winning at first asking on Thursday.

At Keeneland, two OBS grads trained by Wesley Ward ran his baby race winning streak to ten, scoring in 4-1/2 furlong Maiden Special Weight tests. In the fourth race, Ten Broeck Farm’s Mucho Amor led all the way and scored by a neck. The daughter of Mucho Macho Man was purchased by Ben McElroy out of the Halcyon Hammock Farm consignment for $260,000 at the recent OBS March Sale after speeding an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

Two races later Breeze Easy LLC’s Shang Shang Shang led from start to finish en route to a 2-1/4 length victory. The Shanghai Bobby filly is a two time OBS graduate, sold by Summerfield at the 2017 Winter Mixed Sale and then purchased at OBS March by Breeze Easy for $200,000 out of the SBM Training & Sales consignment after also turning in an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. watch her under tack video

At Gulfstream Park, it was Monarch Stables’ Bye Bye J, trained by Ron Spatz, coming from just off the pace to take a 4-1/2 furlong Maiden Special Weight dash by three quarters of a length. The filly by Uncaptured, the first winner for her sire, was sold to Frank Bertolino for $21,000 by Perrone Sales at the 2017 Winter Mixed Sale.

War Front colt tops third Spring Sale session

Hip No. 888, Battle of Algiers, a bay colt by War Front consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, went to Narvick International, Agent for Katsumi Yoshida, for $725,000 to top the third session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. Out of graded stakes winner River Belle (GB), by Lahib, the half brother to graded stakes winner Strathnaver (GB) turned in a quarter in :21 1/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session.

Hip No. 669, a chestnut filly by Candy Ride (ARG) consigned by RiceHorse Stable (Brandon & Ali Rice), Agent, was sold to Mike Ryan, Agent, for $650,000. Out of stakes placed Minesave, by Mineshaft, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner Jaramar Rain, she breezed a quarter in :21 1/5 at Thursday’s Under Tack Session.
Phoenix Thoroughbred (III) Ltd. went to $625,000 for Hip No. 726, a son of Giant’s Causeway consigned by Off the Hook LLC, Agent. The bay colt, who worked an eighth on Thursday in :10 2/5, is out of My Special Secret, by Mineshaft, a half sister to graded stakes winner Ask Me No Secrets.
Hip No. 899, a son of Arch consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to D. J. Stable LLC for $425,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who worked a quarter in :21 1/5 on Friday, is out of stakes winning OBS graduate Rosa Salvaje, by Chapel Royal.
Hip No. 651, another son of Arch consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, was purchased by Mike Ryan, Agent for Marc Keller, for $410,000. Hip No. 800, consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, a dark bay or brown colt by Hard Spun, was purchased by John C. Oxley for $400,000. The half brother to graded stakes winner Annual Report, who worked a quarter in :21 1/5 on Thursday, is out of Pension, by Seeking the Gold.
Hip No. 913, a dark bay or brown filly by Shakin It Up consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was purchased for $400,000 by Spendthrift Farm. Out of Rupert’s Promise, by Capote, from the family of grade one winner Roman Ruler, she breezed a quarter in :20 4/5 on Friday.
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners went to $370,000 for Hip No. 876, a son of Verrazano consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, who worked a quarter in :20 4/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session. The bay colt out of Relaxing Green, by Formal Gold, is a half brother to newly graded stakes placed Marley’s Freedom, second in Santa Anita’s recent Santa Monica Stakes (G2).

For the day, 175 horses brought a total of $16,047,500 compared with 182 selling for a total of $18,006,500 at last year’s third session. The average price was $91,700, compared with $98,937 in 2017 while the median was $55,000, up 13.4% from $48,500 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 19.3%; it was 7.6% last year.
