Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Feathered took the lead at the start of Churchill’s $150, 000 Edgewood Stakes (G3) on Oaks Day and stayed there all the way to the wire, holding off fellow OBS graduate Quality Rocks (August ’13) by two lengths, with B Rockett (April ’14) checking in fourth. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old daughter of Indian Charlie, who placed in a pair of graded stakes at two. Trained by Todd Pletcher, she’s now 8-2-2-1 with $400,974 in earnings. James L. Driver and H. Ywachetta’s Rivers Run Deep was sent away a 1-9 favorite in Saturday’s $75,000 Edward Babst/Albert Palacios Memorial Handicap at Belterra Park and he justified that billing, taking the lead at the start and drawing off in the stretch to a nine length victory. It’s the sixth stakes win for the 4-year-old colt by Ready’s Image, trained by Chris Hartman, now 18-8-6-2 with $434,300 in earnings. He was sold by Rod McVey, Agent, for $77,000 to Garry Simms, Agent for James Driver, at the 2013 OBS June Sale after he worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. watch his under tack video
Gainesway Stable’s Danzatrice tried stakes company for the first time in Saturday’s $76,500 Parx Oaks, took charge at the top of the stretch after stalking the leaders, then drew away in the lane and won by 4-1/4 lengths. It’s the third win in four starts for the 3-year-old daughter of Dunkirk, sold for $105,000 by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC at the 2014 OBS April Sale after she turned in an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. OBS graduates Carpe Diem, El Kabeir, Ocho Ocho Ocho and War Story will go to the post in Saturday’s 141st Kentucky Derby. If one should win, he would be the fourth OBS grad to take the Run for the Roses.
The first was 1992 winner Lil E Tee, a colt by At the Threshold consigned to the 1991 Spring sale by Brent Fernung’s Sylvan Crest Stud, agent for Green Key Farm, and sold to Al Jevremovic for $25,000. Purchased privately by trainer Lynn Whiting on behalf of W. Cal Partee, Lil E Tee won the Jim Beam Stakes (G2) prior to his Derby victory and was a graded stakes winner at four before retiring with earnings of $1.4-million.
Silver Charm, hero of the 1997 Derby and Preakness, was a two time OBS graduate, sold first by Janie Roper, Agent to Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds for $16,000 at the 1995 August Sale and then resold by Hartley/De Renzo for $100,000 at the 1996 Spring Sale. Trained by Bob Baffert and racing for Bob & Beverly Lewis, the Florida-bred son of Silver Buck was a graded stakes winner at two and captured both the Derby and Preakness in heart-stopping fashion. Although his Triple Crown bid came up short in the Belmont (G1), he went on to win seven more graded stakes, including the Dubai World Cup (G1) and retired with earnings of over $6.9-million. Voted 1997’s 3-year-old champion, he was inducted into racing’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
I’ll Have Another, by Flower Alley, consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, on behalf of Victor Davila to the 2011 Spring Sale, was purchased by Dennis O’Neill for $35,000 on behalf of J. P. Reddam. After winning the Santa Anita Derby (G1) for trainer Doug O’Neill, he unleashed a relentless stretch drive and overpowered Bodemeister in the final yards to win the Kentucky Derby (G1). With the Triple Crown in his sights after an even more thrilling stretch run in the Preakness (G1), he was retired on the morning of the Belmont due to injury. Winner of the Eclipse Award as 2012’s 3-year-old champion, he retired to stud duty at Big Red Farm in Japan with earnings of over $2.6-million.
WinStar Farm LLC and Stonestreet Stables LLC’s Carpe Diem will be among the Derby favorites, coming into the race off a three length victory in Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes (G1) after returning to the races with a win in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2). A winner of four of five starts including the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1), his only loss was a second place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Breaking from post two, he’ll be ridden by John Velazquez. The colt by Giant’s Causeway, trained by Todd Pletcher, has three graded stakes wins to his credit and earnings of $1,519,800. Zayat Stables LLC’s El Kabeir has been a solid performer since his ten length romp in a maiden special at Saratoga last summer. A winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) over the Churchill Downs surface at two, he has won the Jerome (G3) and Gotham (G3) at three. Trained by John Terranova, he comes into the Derby with $768,892 in earnings. The colt by Scat Daddy, who will break from post seven and be ridden by Calvin Borel, was purchased for a co-sale topping $250,000 by EQB, Inc. on behalf of Zayat Stables from Summerfield Sales (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent for Rustlewood Farm, at the 2013 OBS August Yearling Sale. DP Racing, LLC’s Ocho Ocho Ocho, who drew the rail and will be ridden by Elvis Trujillo, brings a solid resume into the Derby. He boasts three wins in five trips to the post, including a victory in the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (G3) at two, and earnings of $793,580. Trained by James M. Cassidy, he comes into the race off a third place finish in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. A son of Derby winner Street Sense, he was named for his hip number (888) in the 2014 OBS April Sale. Loooch Racing Stables, Inc., Glenn K. Ellis and Christopher T. Dunn’s War Story has been flying below the radar all winter at Fair Grounds. Trained by Tom Amoss, he’s been on the board in the LeComte (G3), Risen Star (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2). The colt by Northern Afleet, a winner of both his other starts, has earned $234,600 to date. He’ll be ridden by Joe Talamo and break from the 18 post. William & Corrine Heiligbrodt’s Cinco Charlie went right to the front at the start of Saturday’s $100, 000 William Walker Stakes at Churchill Downs and stayed there all the way en route to a 1-1/2 length victory. It’s the sixth stakes win for the 3-year-old graded stakes winning son of Indian Charlie, trained by Steve Asmussen. Fruition Racing LLC’s Stormdriver saved ground in the early going of Saturday’s 60,000 John Henry Stakes at Evangeline Downs, swung out for the drive and then blew past the leaders on his way to a 5-3/4 length victory. It’s the second stakes win for the 5-year-old son of Discreet Cat, sold by Mecco Sales (Mary Ellen Coenen), Agent, for $36,000 at the 2011 OBS August Sale. Hip No. 1100, a son of Bernardini consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, went to Linda Rice, Agent for Kaitar Racing LLC for $900,000 to top the fourth and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2015 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Saturday’s Under Tack session, is out of graded stakes winner Graeme Six, by Graeme Hall, and is a half brother to stakes placed Cali Star and to promising 3-year-old Delightful Joy, a winner at first asking and favorite in the recent Beaumont Stakes (G3) at Keeneland.
Mark Casse, Agent, went to $750,000 for Hip No. 1073, Street Gray, a gray or roan Street Cry (IRE) colt consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent for Golden Legacy Stables. Out of Gharbiah, by Bernardini, a half sister to graded one winner Honey Ryder, his eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance at last Friday’s Under Tack session.
Hip No. 1032, a daughter of Harlan’s Holiday consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was purchased by J.W.S. for $500,000. The bay filly, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Saturday’s Under Tack session, is out is out of Favoritism, by Tiznow, a daughter of graded stakes placed Chaste.
Hip No. 934, Dark Day, a daughter of Bernardini consigned by King’s Equine, Agent, was sold to Up Up & Away Stables for $450,000. The bay filly, whose quarter in :20 4/5 was the fastest work at the distance at Friday’s Under Tack session, is out of Dark Sky, by Storm Cat, a full sister to grade one stakes winner Nebraska Tornado.
Hip No. 901, a son of Street Cry (IRE) consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, went to Whispering Oaks Farm for $375,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who turned in a quarter in :21 4/5 last Friday, is out of Contessa Halo, by Southern Halo, and is a half brother to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Kantharos.
Stonestreet Stables LLC & George Bolton paid $370,000 for Hip No. 1053, a son of Macho Uno consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent. The gray or roan colt, who breezed a quarter 1n :21 1/5 at Saturday’s Under Tack session, is out of Forbidden Kiss, by Touch Gold, and is a full brother to graded stakes placed Indulgence.
Hip No. 1075, a bay colt by Tizway out of Gin Running, by Go for Gin was sold to Stan Hough, Agent, for $320,000. Consigned by King’s Equine, Agent, the three quarter brother to graded stakes winners Tizfiz and Fury Kapcori worked an Under Tack eighth on Saturday in :10 1/5.
Hip No. 1097, a son of Interactif consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, whose quarter in :21 flat was co-fastest at the distance at Saturday’s Under Tack session, went to John Brocklebank, Agent for Dickman Legacy Farm for $310,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Grable, by Dehere, and is a half brother to graded stakes placed stakes winner Get in Da House.
For the session, 160 two-year-olds sold for a total of $14,054,500, compared with 182 horses bringing $13,242,000 at the corresponding session last year. The average price was $87,841, up 20.7% from $72,758 in 2014 while the median was $45,000, a gain of 7.1% above last year’s $42,000 median figure. The buyback percentage was 21.2%; it was 22.5% a year ago.
For the entire sale, 676 horses grossed $53,711,400, compared with 770 youngsters bringing a sale record $56,965,000 a year ago. The average price was a sale record $79,455, up 7.4% over last year’s record $73,981, while the median figure was $45,000, equaling the sale record set at the 2014 sale. The buyback percentage was 22%; it was 18.2% a year ago. Sixty horses sold for $200,000 or more compared with 52 at the 2014 sale.

The average price was $92,829, up 14.2% compared with $81,303 a year ago, while the median price was $50,000, compared with last year’s $52,000 figure. The buyback percentage was 26.5%; it was 18.4% last year.

Team D went to $300,000 for Hip No. 536, a son of Scat Daddy consigned by Cary Frommer, Agent. The chestnut colt, who breezed an eighth in :11 flat at the Wednesday Under Tack session, is out of Sunny, by Dixieland Band, a half sister to stakes winner Wake Up Kiss.
For the day, 152 horses sold for a total of $13,266,700, compared with 207 horses selling for a total of $15,916,500 at last year’s second session. The average price was $87,281, up 13.5% compared with $76,891 a year ago, while the median price was $50,00, gaining 11.1% over last year’s $45,000 figure. The buyback percentage was 28.9%; it was 14.1% last year.

John C. Kimmel, Agent, went to $270,000 on behalf of Tobey L. Morton for Hip No. 273, a son of Pioneerof the Nile out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Princess Belle. The dark bay or brown colt, consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, turned in an eighth in :10 2/5 at last Tuesday’s Under Tack session.
Hip No. 137, a bay colt by Archarcharch out of K. O. Kitty, by Tale of the Cat, was sold to Arnold Zetcher LLC for $250,000. Consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, the half brother to stakes placed Syriana’s Song, breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Monday’s Under Tack session.
Jacob L. West, Agent, paid $250,000 for Hip No. 157, a daughter of More Than Ready out of Morekissesforpatti, by Unbridled’s Song, from the family of champion Hansel. Consigned by Mayberry Farm, Agent, the dark bay or brown filly turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5 last Monday.
Hip No. 277, Ancient Secret, a chestnut filly by Kantharos consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Steven W. Young, Agent, for $225,000. Out of Privacy, by Notebook, a half sister to stakes winner Admonition, she sped a quarter in :21 1/5 last Tuesday.
Steven W. Young went to $220,000 for Hip No. 58, Brugge, a daughter of Smoke Glacken also consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent. The dark bay or brown filly, who worked a quarter in :21 1/5 at the Under Tack Show, is out of Lilies So Fair, by Giant’s Causeway, a half sister to graded stakes winner My Miss Sophia and undefeated classic contender Materiality, winner of the recent Florida Derby (G1).
Hip No. 256, a daughter of Yes It’s True consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was sold for $200,000 to Barry Berkelhammer, Agent. The chestnut filly, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 last Tuesday, is out of Pleasant Ring, by Pleasant Tap, and is a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Bad Debt.
For the day, 163 horses sold for a total of $9,642,700, compared with 186 horses bringing $11,952,500 at last year’s opening session. The average price was $59,158 compared with $64,261 in 2014, while the median price rose 5% from $40,000 a year ago to $42,000 in 2015. The buyback percentage was 28.2%; it was 17.7% last year.

The 2015 OBS Spring Sale of Two Year Olds in Training begins a four day run on Tuesday, April 21st. Hip No.’s 1-300 will sell on Tuesday, Hip No.’s 301-600 sell on Wednesday, Hip No.’s 601-900 sell Thursday and Hip No.’s 901-1203 on Friday. All four sessions begin at 10:30 a.m.
OBS Spring Sale graduates have long been a major force at North American racetracks. Eight have won Eclipse Awards and three are classic winners. Lil E Tee took the 1992 Kentucky Derby (G1) while Silver Charm and I’ll Have Another captured both the Derby and Preakness (G1) in 1997 and 2012, respectively. Parranda was recently honored as 2014’s champion Florida-bred older filly or mare. Since the beginning of 2014, Spring graduates have won or placed in 273 stakes including 79 graded races. Last year’s sale has already produced 59 stakes horses, including 25 stakes winners. That group includes graded stakes winners Calculator, Leave the Light On, No Problem, and Ocho Ocho Ocho, on his way to the Kentucky Derby (G1). Other notables from the 2014 sale include multiple stakes winners Catalina Red, Firespike, Lady Shipman, Mr. Jordan and The Lewis Dinner.
At the six-session Under Tack Show, three horses shared honors for the fastest eighths, each stopping the timer in :9 4/5. Last Thursday, it was Hip No. 692, a daughter of Lemon Drop Kid out of graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS graduate Yonagucci, by Yonaguska. The bay filly is consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent. Two youngsters from the de Meric consignment breezed eighths in :9 4/5 on Saturday. Hip No. 1032, a bay filly by Harlan’s Holiday, is out of Favoritism, by Tiznow, a daughter of graded stakes placed Chaste. Hip No. 1073, consigned by de Meric Sales as Agent for Golden Legacy Stables, is a gray or roan colt by Street Cry (IRE) out of Gharbiah, by Bernardini, a half sister to graded one winner Honey Ryder.
Hip No. 608, a daughter of Big Drama consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, worked the sale’s fastest quarter on Thursday, getting the distance in :20 3/5. The dark bay or brown filly is out of stakes placed Twilight Mirage, by Jeblar, and is a half sister to stakes winner Determinato.
Two horses worked three eighths in 33 2/5, the Under Tack Show’s fastest at the distance. On Monday it was Hip No. 11, a bay colt by Magna Graduate consigned by Blue River Bloodstock, Agent, out of Kimberlite, by Mineshaft. He’s a full brother to stakes placed Unbridled Graduate. On Tuesday it was Hip No. 257, a bay colt by Tale of Ekati consigned by All Dreams Equine, Agent, out of Poetic Champion, by Woodman, a full sister to stakes winner Mr. Woodman.

Ranlo Investments LLC’s Lady Shipman, idle since her track record performance in the OBS Sprint Stakes in January, took to the turf in her return to the races in Saturday’s five furlong $100,000 Stormy Blues Stakes at Pimlico. Taking over after a brief duel for the early lead, she opened up daylight on the turn then ran away in the stretch to a five length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Harlan’s Honor (April ’14), checked in third. It’s the fourth win in five starts for the 3-year-old daughter of Midshipman, consigned by Pleasant Acres Farm, Agent, to the 2014 OBS April Sale where she sped an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. Klaravich Stables, Inc. and William H. Lawrence’s Control Stake made it two stakes wins in a row in Saturday’s $100,000 Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes at Charles Town, taking the lead a quarter mile from home and drawing off to a 4-1/2 length victory. Trained by Tom Amoss, the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Discreetly Mine is now 7-4-2-1 and has earned $198,400. He was sold by Beth Bayer, Agent, for $85,000 at the 2013 OBS August Sale.
