TrackTimesTodayFor decades, the OBS Spring sale has been the springboard for horses that have gone on to compete at thoroughbred racing’s highest levels. From coast to coast in North America and from Dubai to Seoul overseas, Spring sale grads have won graded stakes and earned championship honors.
Kitten’s Joy, now among North America’s leading sires, came out of the 2003 Spring Sale and took home seven graded stakes and earned more than two million dollars. His 3-year-old campaign in 2004, highlighted by wins in the Secretariat (G1) and Joe Hirsch Invitational (G1) earned the Eclipse Award as champion grass horse.
Three classic winners have been sold at the OBS Spring Sale. The first was 1991 graduate Lil E. Tee, whose earnings of over $1.4-million came from four graded wins including the 1992 Kentucky Derby (G1).
Silver Charm came out of the 1996 sale to win major races at three, four and five, including a run at the Triple Crown after winning the 1997 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1). After winning the Eclipse Award as 3-year-old champion, he captured the Dubai World Cup (G1) as a 4-year-old and retired to stud in Japan with a resume of 11 graded wins and nearly $7-milllion in earnings.
Although denied a chance at the Triple Crown by injury, 2011 graduate I’ll Have Another was the toast of the sports world after determined stretch runs carried him to victory in the 2012 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1). Retired on the morning of the Belmont Stakes (G1) he went to stud in Japan with a resume of four graded wins and earnings of over $2.6-million.
Spring graduates, from the 1994 sale’s Val’s Prince to the 2011 sale’s Parranda, have made their mark on the international scene. After winning the 1997 Turf Classic (G1) at Belmont, millionaire Val’s Prince shipped overseas and won the Hong Kong International Cup (G2). Back home, he raced for three more seasons, capturing both the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) and Turf Classic (G1) during 1999. Roses in May came out of the 2002 sale to win four graded stakes stateside before ending his career with a victory in the 2005 Dubai World Cup (G1) before heading to Japan for stud duty.
Korea has been fertile ground for Spring Sale graduates, highlighted by major stakes winners Fly Top Queen, back to back Grand Prix winner Dongbanui Gangja and Gamdonguibada, the first filly to win the Grand Prix, Korea’s most prestigious race.
Recently, a number of runner have been purchased from the Spring sale and exported to Japan, including graded stakes winner Best Warrior, a 2012 graduate, who has has amassed earnings of just under $2-million.
China Horse Club’s Parranda is the latest Spring sale world traveler, winning the rich Singapore Cup after capturing three graded stakes wins at home, becoming the twenty second Spring Sale graduate to top the million dollar mark in earnings. She captured the first of her four graded stakes wins in Gulfstream’s Suwanee River Stakes (G3) in February, 2014 and recently won the inaugural running of the S$3.05 million CECF Singapore Cup at Kranji Racecourse. Trained now by Christophe Clement, the 6-year-old daughter of English Channel, bred in Florida by Kinsman Farm, was originally sold for $13,000 by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, at the 2011 Spring Sale after working an eighth in :11 flat at the Under Tack Show. Since the beginning of 2014, OBS Spring graduates have won or placed in 80 graded stakes, including 23 victories.
Arnold Zetcher LLC & Michael Tabor’s Fashion Plate was the first Spring graduate to make the grade in 2014, scoring back to back victories in the Las Virgenes (G1) and Santa Anita Oaks (G1) In the care of trainer Simon Callaghan.The daughter of Old Fashioned, sold in 2013 for $340,000 by de Meric Sales, Agent, after she sped an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show, retired with earnings of over $460,000 and was sold in the fall of 2014 for $1.2-million as a broodmare prospect. watch her under tack video
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and Green Smith’s Wild Dude, winner of Santa Anita’s Palos Verdes Stakes (G2) in early 2014, led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of Santa Anita’s $250,500 San Carlos Stakes (G2) on March 7 of this year, turning back Kobe’s Back (March ’13) by three quarters of a length, with fellow Spring grad Conquest Two Step (April ’13, August ’12) third. The two-time OBS graduate was sold first by Perrone Sales, Agent, at the 2010 Fall Mixed Sale and then resold for $42,000 by Costanzo Sales after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 at the 2012 Spring Sale. Alpha Delta Stables’ Devil’s Cave made the grade with a victory in the Sabin Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream last February, cruising to a 3-1/2 length victory in a track record 1:41 flat for the mile and a sixteenth. The Florida-bred daughter of Put It Back was purchased by Steve Young, Agent, for $180,000 out of the Blue River Bloodstock consignment at the 2012 Spring Sale after she sped a quarter in :20 3/5 at the Under Tack Show. Martin Racing Stable LLC’s Marchman, trained by Keith Desormeaux, scored a pair of graded wins in 2014, taking the Shakertown Stakes (G3) on the Keeneland turf course in April and then the Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes (G3) on Oaks Day at Churchill Downs. The Sharp Humor colt, sold for $90,000 by Seahorse Stables LLC, Agent, at the 2012 Spring Sale after a quarter in :21 2/5 at the Under Tack Show, ended 2014 with $407,954 in earnings. watch his under tack video
Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stables and Ciaglia Racing LLC’s Dance With Fate earned a berth in the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) with a victory in the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. Trained by Peter Eurton, his credentials also included a runner-up finish in Golden Gate’s El Camino Real Derby (G3) at three and second place finishes in both Santa Anita’s FrontRunner Stakes (G1) and the Del Mar Futurity (G1) at two. After breezing an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show for the 2013 Spring Sale, he was purchased by Joseph Ciaglia, Jr. on the recommendation of Larry Zap and Eurton for $120,000 out of his breeder’s Best A Luck Farm consignment. Kaleem Shah’s Declassify took on some of California’s top sprinters in the Triple Bend Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita in late June, appeared beaten in the final furlong but came again along the rail and was up in the final jump to win by a nose. It was the first stakes win for the colt by Orientate, purchased for $450,000 out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2012 Spring Sale after he turned in an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. Currently training under Bob Baffert for his return to the races, he ended his 4-year-old campaign with $261,740 in earnings. watch his under tack video
Alex & JoAnn Lieblong’s lightly raced The Big Beast scored in Saratoga’s prestigious King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) last summer for trainer Anthony Dutrow before he was forced to the sidelines by injury. Consigned by Ends Well, Agent, to the 2013 Spring Sale, he was purchased by the Lieblongs for $150,000 after working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Ken & Sarah Ramsey’s Stephanie’s Kitten has been a money machine throughout her career, racking up seven graded stakes wins and nearly $3-million in earnings. Winner of Belmont’s Flower Bowl Stakes (G1) in 2014, she got her 2015 campaign off on the right foot at Tampa Bay Downs, taking the Hillsborough Stakes (G3) by a length and a half. H. Jack Hendricks and Roger Justice’s well-traveled East Hall has been a busy and consistent performer throughout his career, winning in the Midwest as well as his native Florida. On the board in seven stakes races, his 2014 3-year-old campaign was highlighted by wins in the Ohio Derby and Indiana Derby (G3). The two time OBS graduate was sold by Summerfield, Agent, at the 2012 August Sale and then worked an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5 before he was purchased by trainer Bill Kaplan for $55,000 on behalf of Hendricks and Justice out of the Southern Chase Farm, Inc. (Greg and Karen Dodd) consignment at the 2013 April Sale. Four graded stakes winners have emerged from the 2014 Spring Sale, and P and G Stables LLC’s No Problem was the first. Jumping from a maiden win straight into the Bob Hope Stakes (G3) at Del Mar on November 14th, he came from just off the pace and scored by half a length. The son of Munnings, trained by Michael W. McCarthy, has earned $92,860 to date. The two time OBS graduate was purchased by P and G for $30,000 out of the Top Line Sales consignment at the 2013 August Sale and then consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, to the 2014 April Sale where he breezed an eighth in :10 flat. watch his under tack video
DP Racing, LLC’s Ocho Ocho Ocho, entered in Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland, won two stakes in 2014, the biggest the $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (G3) in November. The Street Sense colt, named for his hip number (888) in the 2014 Spring Sale, was consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC. Selected by Gary Young and purchased by Deron Pearson’s DP Racing for $200,000 after working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show, he has earned over $700,000 in the care of trainer James M. Klaravich Stables, LLC and William H. Lawrence’s talented Leave the Light On was derailed by injury after winning the Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct over the highly regarded Frosted in late November. The colt by Horse Greeley, trained by Chad Brown, won two of his three starts and earned $285,375. Richard C. Pell’s Calculator was still a maiden when he gamely finished second to the brilliant American Pharoah in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and FrontRunner Stakes (G1) last summer, but took care of that technicality in style in January with an eye catching 4-1/4 length romp in the Sham Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. Forced to skip the classics by minor injury, he’s back in training for Peter Miller and should be heard from later in the year. The Florida-bred colt by In Summation, purchased for $132,000 from breeder Ocala Stud at the 2014 Spring Sale after turning in a quarter in :21 1/5 at the Under Tack Show, has earned $193,500 to date. watch his under tack video
Ever since trainer Mark Casse sent Conquest Stables LLC’s Conquest Two Step to the West Coast, the Florida-bred Two Step Salsa colt has never been off the board in four stakes appearances. The highlight was leading a 1-2-3-4 OBS sweep of the Palos Verdes Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita in January, turning back Secret Circle (March ’11), Wild Dude (April ’12, October ’10) and Distinctiv Passion (August ’11, January ’11). Sold as a yearling by Get Away Farm at the 2012 OBS August Sale, he was then purchased by Conquest for $420,000 out of the Eisaman Equine consignment at the 2013 OBS April Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. Black Hawk Stable’s Alsvid is closing in on the million dollar mark after overcoming a stumble leaving the gate in Oaklawn’s $300,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) and winning by three quarters of a length. It’s the first graded stakes win for the 6-year-old son of Officer, trained by Chris Hartman. With eight stakes wins to his credit, he’s now29-12-7-3 and has earned $933,465. He was sold for $55,000 by Stephens Thoroughbreds, Agent, at the 2011 OBS April Sale after turning in an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video
Michael E. Pegram , Karl Watson, Paul Weitman’s Secret Circle, who beat the world’s best sprinters in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), did it again in the $2,000,000 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) at Meydan on Saturday. Taking command after turning for home, he held off a determined stretch challenge from New Zealand’s Super Jockey and was best at the wire by a neck. It’s the fourth graded stakes win for the 6-year-old colt by Eddington, trained by Bob Baffert, now 16-8-6-1 with $3,670,790 in earnings. Four OBS graduates have accounted for five victories in the Golden Shaheen. Carolyn Chapman & Theresa MacArthur’s Caller One (March ’99) won back to back renewals in 2001 and 2002. In 2005, it was Evelyn Pollard’s Saratoga County (February ’03) and Saud Al Kabeer’s two time OBS graduate Big City Man (January ’06, August ’06) scored in 2009.
Phaedrus Flights LLC’s Celestine jumped straight from a March 1st maiden win into stakes company in Sunday’s $75,000 Sanibel Island Handicap at Gulfstream, took the lead at the break, shook off a challenge halfway home and drew away with ease to a 3-1/4 length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Miss Margaret (June ’14, August ’13) checked in third. Consigned by Gayle Woods on behalf of Phaedrus Flights to the 2014 OBS June Sale, the 3-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy turned in the Under Tack Show’s fastest three eighths, stopping the timer in :32 2/5. Keith Plaisance’s Pacific Pink picked up her first stakes win in the $75,000 Crescent City Oaks on Saturday at Fair Grounds, overcoming a wide trip around both turns before getting up in the final strides and scoring by a head. The 3-year-old Private Vow filly, trained by Edward Johnston, is now 5-3-0-2 and has earned $105,600. A total of 1203 juveniles have been cataloged for the four-day sale, set for Tuesday through Friday, April 21st through April 24th, with all sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The Under Tack Show will be divided into six sessions, scheduled for Monday, April 13th through Saturday, April 18th, with each session beginning at 8:00 a.m. Hip No.’s 1-200 will breeze on Monday, Hip No.’s 201-400 go on Tuesday, Hip No.’s 401- 600 will work on Wednesday, Hip No.’s 601-800 will go on Thursday, Hip No.’s 801-1000 breeze Friday and Hip No.’s 1001-1203 will go on Saturday. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF and Bloodhorse websites.
OBS Spring Sale graduates have long been a major force at North American racetracks. Eight have won Eclipse Awards and three are classic winners. Lil E Tee took the 1992 Kentucky Derby (G1) while Silver Charm and I’ll Have Another captured both the Derby and Preakness (G1) in 1997 and 2012, respectively. Parranda, winner of the recent S$3.05 million CECF Singapore Cup was honored this past week as 2014’s champion Florida-bred older filly or mare.
Since the beginning of 2014, Spring graduates have won or placed in 256 stakes over 67 different surfaces, including 70 graded races. King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) winner The Big Beast returned to the races with a victory in his 2015 debut and millionaire grade one winner Stephanie’s Kitten took Tampa Bay Downs’ recent Hillsborough Stakes (G3) in her first start of the year.
Last year’s sale has already produced 56 stakes horses, including 23 stakes winners. That group includes No Problem, who captured Del Mar’s Bob Hope Stakes (G3), Delta Downs Jackpot (G3) winner Ocho Ocho Ocho, Remsen Stakes (G2) hero Leave the Light On and the highly regarded Calculator, second to champion American Pharoah in a pair of grade one stakes last summer before running away with Santa Anita’s Sham Stakes (G3) in his 3-year-old debut. Other notables from the 2014 sale include multiple stakes winners Catalina Red, Firespike, Mr. Jordan and The Lewis Dinner as well as Lady Shipman, who smashed the track record in her victory in the OBS Sprint Stakes in January.

OBS April: Springboard to Success |
Hip No. 481, a son of Broken Vow consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, went to Linda Rice, Agent, for $950,000 to top the second and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2015 March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, who worked an eighth in :9 4/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes placed Tale of the South, by Tale of the Cat, a half sister to graded stakes winner Futural.
Hip No. 351, daughter of Bernardini consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was sold to Lael Stable for $850,000. The bay filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Thursday’s Under Tack session, is out of multiple grade one winner Pure Clan, by Pure Prize.
Conquest Stables LLC went to $725,000 for Hip No. 590, a son of Uncle Mo consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent. The bay colt, who worked an Under Tack eighth on Friday in :10 flat, is out of Being Anna, by Aldebaran, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Winning Point.
Hip No. 428, a bay filly by Adios Charlie consigned by Ocala Stud was sold to Narvick International for $675,000. The half sister to stakes winner Puntrooskie out of stakes placed Siren Cove, by Montbrook worked an Under Tack quarter in :20 3/5 on Friday.
Hip No. 601, Prosperous Lady, a daughter of Bernardini out of graded stakes winner Bohemian Lady, by Carson City, was sold to Haruya Yoshida for $650,000. The bay filly, consigned by Classic Bloodstock (Danzel Brendemuehl), Agent, worked an eighth last Friday in :10 1/5.
Hip No. 390, a daughter of Twirling Candy consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, went to L. E. B. for $630,000. The bay filly, a half sister to stakes winner Anytime Magic out of Sambuca Classica, by Cat Thief, worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat last Thursday.
Conquest Stables LLC purchased Hip No. 515, a son of Adios Charlie, out of the Ocala Stud consignment for $600,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 2/5 last Friday, is out of stakes placed Unlimited Pleasure, by Valid Appeal, and is a half brother to threegraded stakes winners Unlimited Budget, Jardin and Beacon Shine.
West Point Thoroughbreds, Inc. went to $580,000 for Hip No. 366, a son of Arch out of Rebuke, by Carson City, a half sister to stakes winner Summer Cruise. The bay colt, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show, was consigned by Imagine…
Hip No. 610, a son of Sidney’s Candy consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, went to L.E.B. for $560,000. The chestnut colt, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5, is out of stake winner Broadway Hennessey, by Hennessy, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Courageous Act.
Hip No. 537, a chestnut filly by City Zip consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was purchased by Conquest Stables LLC for $525,000. Out of stakes winner Woodsmoke, by Langfuhr, the half sister to stakes placed Enoree worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5.
For the session, 155 horses grossed $24,435,000, averaging $157,645. The median price was $100,000 and the buyback percentage was 25.8%.
For the entire sale, 326 horses sold for a March record $55,682,000, averaging $170,804. The median price was $105,000 and the buyback percentage was 22.7%.
At last year’s Selected Sale in March, 201 horses brought a total of $37,627,500, averaging $187,201. The median price was $135,000 and the buyback percentage was 22.9%.
Twenty five horses brought $500,000 or more compared with ten a year ago.
The overall sale topper was Hip No. 285, Zero Hour, a son of Bernardini consigned by SGV Thoroughbreds (Steven Venosa), Agent, sold to Live Oak Plantation for $1.4-million on Tuesday. The bay colt, who worked a quarter in :21 1/5 at Thursday’s Under Tack session, is out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Misty Hour, by Miswaki, and is a half brother to stakes winner Pilfer, dam of grade one winner To Honor and Serve.

The chestnut filly, who breezed an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5, is out of stakes winner For Royalty, by Not For Love, and is a half sister to recently stakes placed OBS graduate Back Flip.
Hip No. 12, a son of Smart Strike consigned by Old South Farm LLC went to M. V. Magnier & Stonestreet Stables for $800,000. The chestnut colt, who breezed an eighth in :9 4/5 at Wednesday’s Under Tack session, is out of graded stakes winner Carolyn’s Cat, by Forestry, and is a half brother to recent graded stakes winner Mufajaah.
Conquest Stables LLC went to $800,000 for Hip No. 239, a son of Tiznow consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed an Under Tack quarter in :21 4/5, is out of Lasting Appeal, by A.P. Indy, a full sister to graded stakes winner Jump Start.
Hip No. 155, a daughter of Scat Daddy whose Under Tack eighth in :9 3/5 last Wednesday was the co-fastest of the entire sale at the distance, was sold to M. V. Magnier for $750,000. Consigned by McKathan Bros., Agent, the chestnut filly is a half sister to stakes winner Prenuptial out of stakes winner Global Finance, by End Sweep.
C. F. Farms went to $725,000 for Hip No. 33, a daughter of Congrats consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent. The chestnut filly, who breezed an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5, is out of Christie Village, by Deputy Minister, a half sister to multiple grade one winner Take Charge Lady.
Hip No. 60, a Street Sense colt consigned by All In Sales (Tony Bowling), Agent, was sold to Mark Casse, Agent, for $675,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who turned in an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show, is out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Czechers, by Indian Charlie.
Mark Casse also went to $675,000 for Hip No. 162, a Malibu Moon colt consigned by Thomas and Casse, Agent, out of Goldilocks’ Cat, by Seeking the Gold, a half sister to stakes winner Beautiful Daniele from the family of champion Countess Diana. The bay colt worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at Wednesday’s Under Tack session.
Spendthrift Farm paid $650,000 for Hip No. 61, a son of Distorted Humor consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent. The gray or roan colt, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5, is out of stakes winner Dance Quietly, by A.P. Indy, a half sister to Horse of the Year Saint Liam.
For the session, 160 horses sold for a total of $30,540,000 averaging $190,875. The median price was $130,000 and the buyback percentage was 24.9%. There was no corresponding session last year since the 2014 sale was held in one continuous session. Fifteen horses sold for $500,000 or more, compared with ten in the entire 2014 March Sale.
The March Sale continues on Wednesday, March 18th at 11:00 a.m. with Hip No.’s 305 – 610 set to go through the ring.
The OBS March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training begins on Tuesday, March 17th. Hip No.’s 1 – 304 will sell on Tuesday and Hip No.’s 305 – 610 will be offered on Wednesday, March 18th. Both sessions will begin at 11:00 a.m. As always the sale will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and the Blood-Horse and DRF websites.
At the Under Tack Show, Hip No. 509, Bernie’s Prize, a son of Noonmark consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, turned in the sale’s fastest quarter mile breeze, clocked in :20 2/5 at Friday’s session. The bay colt is out of Truss, by Friends Lake, a half sister to graded stakes winner Khancord Kid.
Two horses shared honors for the Under Tack’s Show’s fastest eighth, each working the distance in :9 3/5. At Wednesday’s session, it was Hip No. 155, a chestnut filly by Scat Daddy consigned by McKathan Bros, Agent, out of stakes winner Global Finance, by End Sweep. She’s a half sister to stakes winner Prenuptial. On Thursday, it was Hip No. 508, a bay colt by Discreet Cat consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent. He’s out of stakes winner Truly Blushed, by Yes It’s True, and is a half brother to stakes placed Truly Marie.
Last year’s March Sale has already produced 15 stakes winners, led by the exploits of the $1.6-million co-sale topper Carpe Diem, a five length winner of the the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in his three year old debut last Saturday. He’s one of six March grads that accounted for eight grade one victories in 2014, including six of the 15 grade one races at the 2014 Saratoga meeting.
Repole Stable’s Stopchargingmaria accounted for three 2014 graded stakes wins, including back to back victories in Saratoga’s Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) in July and Alabama Stakes (G1) in August. Antonino Miuccio’s Palace also made himself home at The Spa, taking the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) before his victory in the Forego (G1) four weeks later. Magalen O. Bryant’s late blooming V. E. Day skipped the Triple Crown races but came into his own at Saratoga, following a win in the Curlin Stakes with a sensational stretch run that carried him to a last jump victory in the Travers Stakes (G1). Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa’s Itsmyluckyday spent the year taking on the best older horses in training, highlighted by taking the Woodward Stakes (G1) as the Saratoga meeting drew to a close. Out west, Braly Family Trust’s Tom’s Tribute carried the OBS March banner to Del Mar and captured the Eddie Read Stakes (G1) in July.
In all, the OBS March Sale has produced six champions, 21 millionaires and the winners of six Breeders’ Cup races. Since the beginning of 2014 through March 14th, OBS March graduates have won 27 graded stakes. Performing on racetracks from coast to coast, OBS March graduates were on the board in 188 stakes races on 49 different surfaces.
