Three Diamonds Farm’s Army Wife rallied four-wide on the turn in Friday’s $225,000 Iowa Oaks (G3), took the lead after straightening out in the stretch, and eased away late to score by 3-3/4 lengths. That’s two straight graded stakes victories for the 3-year-old daughter of Declaration of War, now 9-4-1-2 with $423,972 in earnings for trainer Mike Maker. OBS graduates scored a pair of stakes wins at Canterbury Park on Wednesday night.

Dennis F. Smith’s Jazzy Times saved ground in the early going of the $110,000 Dark Star Turf Sprint Stakes, came off the rail to rally on the outside down the stretch and was up late to score by a head. Fellow OBS graduate Wellabled (April’16) settled for third after setting the pace. It’s the second stakes win for the graded stakes placed 8-year-old gelding by Discreetly Mine, purchased for $460,000 out of the SGV consignment at the 2015 OBS March Sale by Patrice Miller, EQB Inc., Agent, after turning in an Under Tack quarter in :20 3/5. Hip No. 722, a daughter of Frosted consigned by Silvestre Chavez Thoroughbreds, Agent, went to Mike Ryan, Agent, for $410,000 to top the final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2021 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age. The gray or roan filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Saturday’s Under Tack session, is a half sister to graded stakes winner Summersault out of Saratoga Summer, by Smart Strike.

Hip No. 816, a son of Quality Road consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to M Racing Group, LLC for $400,000. The bay colt, whose quarter in :20 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Sunday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes winner Surfside Tiara, by Scat Daddy, from the family of champion Flanders.

Hip No. 723, a daughter of Frosted consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was sold to Steven W. Young, Agent, for $200,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 on Saturday, is out of Sassy Ali Joy, by Indian Charlie, from the family of champion Banshee Breeze.
Wilson One Constructing LLC went to $200,000 for Hip No. 725, a son of Midnight Storm consigned by Dynasty Thoroughbreds. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 on Saturday, is a half brother to stakes placed Mo of the West out of Satulah, by Gone West, a daughter of graded stakes winner War Thief.

For the session, 162 two-year-olds sold for a total of $8,344,950, compared with 183 grossing $6,468,700 at last year’s third session. The average was $51,512, compared with $35,348 a year ago, while the median price was $25,000, compared to $15,000 in 2020. The buyback percentage was 18.2%; it was 16.4% last year.

Seven older horses sold for $55,200, averaging $7,886 with a $5,500 median price.

For the entire sale, 560 two-year-olds sold for a sale record $24,492,950, surpassing 2015’s $23,608,500, compared with 519 horses grossing $15,864,300 a year ago. The average was a record $43,737, surpassing 2015’s $39,612, compared to $30,567 a year ago while the median price was a sale record equaling $20,000 compared with $13,000 in 2020. The buyback percentage was 18%; it was 20.2% last year.

The sale topper was Hip No. 258, a daughter of Practical Joke consigned by Top Line Sales LLC Agent, sold to Gary Young, Agent, for $425,000 at Wednesday’s opening session. The chestnut filly, whose quarter in :21 1/5 was fastest at the distance at last Thursday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes placed Devious d’Oro, by Medaglia d’Oro, a half sister to graded stakes winner Devious Intent.

The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes winner Midnight Ballet, by Midnight Lute, a half sister to champion Jala Jala (MEX).

Hip No. 418, a daughter of Dialed In consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc, (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was sold to Alistair Roden Bloodstock for $350,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who breezed an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5 on Friday, is a half sister to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Anothertwistafate out of Imprecation, by First Defense.

Hip No. 469, a daughter of Constitution consigned by Pick View LLC, Agent, went to Blue Lion Thoroughbreds for $175,000. The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth on Friday in :10 2/5, is out of Lady Aphrodite, by Giant’s Causeway, a half sister to graded stakes winner Strike It Rich.
Hip No. 491, Flash Kiss, a son of Chitu consigned by Mayberry Farm, Agent, was sold to Tonja Terranova, Agent, for $175,000. The bay colt, who worked an eighth on Friday in :10 flat, is out of Lipstick Traces, by Orientate, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner My Sweet Westly.

For the session, 191 horses grossed $8,149,600, compared with 173 selling for a total of $4,357,800 at last year’s second session. The average was $42,668 up 69.4% compared with $25,190 a year ago, while the median price was $17,000, up 38.5% compared to $13,000 in 2021. The buyback percentage was 22%; it was 18.8% last year.

Hip No. 258, a daughter of Practical Joke consigned by Top Line Sales LLC Agent, went to Gary Young, Agent, for $425,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2021 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age. The chestnut filly, whose quarter in :21 1/5 was fastest at the distance at Thursday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes placed Devious d’Oro, by Medaglia d’Oro, a half sister to graded stakes winner Devious Intent.

Hip No. 149, a daughter of Uncle Mo consigned by Julie Davies LLC, Agent, was sold to Donato Lanni, Agent, for $375,000. Two Dolla Coffee, LLC paid $125,000 for Hip No. 217, a son of Honor Code consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Thursday, is out of Conquest Sweetride, by Candy Ride (ARG), a half sister to graded stakes winner Spelling Again.

For the session, 176 horses grossed $7,268,400, compared with 163 selling for a total of $5,037,800 at last year’s first session. The average was $41,298 up 33.6% compared with $30,907 a year ago, while the median price was $20,000, up 53.9% compared to $13,000 in 2020. The buyback percentage was 26.7%; it was 25.2% last year.

Venetian Harbor leads parade of weekend stakes winners

Ciaglia Racing LLC, Highland Yard LLC, River Oak Farm and Dominic Savides’ Venetian Harbor was much the best in Saturday’s $201,500 Monrovia Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, leading from gate to wire and outclassing seven rivals en route to a 3-1/2 length victory. It’s the third graded stakes win for the 3-year-old daughter of Munnings, now 9-4-4-0 for trainer Richard Baltas, with $633,400 in earnings. Shea D Boy’s Stable’s Shea D Summer led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of Gulfstream’s $75,000 Game Face Stakes on Saturday, taking the lead at the start and never looking back on her way to a 2-1/2 length win. It’s the second stakes victory for the 3-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Summer Front. Competitive Speed (June ’20) closed for second; Mon Petit Chou (April ’20) settled for third. She was sold for $35,000 by breeder Ocala Stud at the 2020 Spring Sale after turning in an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5. Oak Tree Stable’s Offspring sat just off the early leaders in Saturday’s Louisiana Legends Turf Distaff Stakes (taken off the turf) at Evangeline Downs, rallied in the stretch to take command a furlong from home and was best by a length and three quarters at the wire. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 5-year-old daughter of Into Mischief, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before she was purchased for $130,000 out of the Top Line Sales consignment at the 2018 OBS June Sale.
