Winter Mixed Sale set for January 22 – 24

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2014 Winter Mixed Sale is now available on the OBS website at http://obssales.com. The sortable master index provides access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog went to the printer.

A total of 792 horses have been cataloged to date for the three-day sale, scheduled to begin Wednesday, January 22nd with hip numbers 1- 254 selling in the Consignor Preferred session.

The Thursday, January 23rd session will be devoted to the 188 horses (hip numbers 255 – 442) cataloged in the Horses of Racing Age section. Past performances are currently available online. OBS is still accepting supplemental nominations, to be sold as Hip No.’s 444 -500.

The Racing Age Section includes 35 newly turned two year olds and 153 older horses. The optional Under Tack Show, set for Monday, January 20th at 10:00 a.m., will be streamed live via the OBS website and videos will be posted online and viewable at the sales grounds.

Hip numbers 501 – 850 will sell on Friday, January 24th in the Open Session.

All three sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. and the sale will be streamed live via the OBS website and the Blood-Horse and DRF websites.

The OBS Championship Stakes races, run this year for the first time in conjunction with the Winter Mixed Sale, are set for Tuesday, January 21st.

The 258 newly turned yearlings in the sale are highlighted by the progeny of a strong roster of proven sires including Discreet Cat, Exchange Rate, First Samurai, Into Mischief, Leroidesanimaux (BRZ), Macho Uno, Rockport Harbor and Stormy Atlantic.

Promising stallions with yearlings in the sale include Colonel John, Drosselmeyer, Dunkirk, Giralamo, Pioneerof the Nile, Lookin At Lucky, Paddy O’Prado, Super Saver, Tale of Ekati and Uncle Mo.

Broodmare buyers will find mares in foal to a good group of proven stallions including Afleet Alex, Flatter, High Cotton, Majestic Warrior, Put It Back, Tale of the Cat, Yes It’s True and Wildcat Heir as well as up and comers Archarcharch, Biondetti, Court Vision, Big Drama, Kodiak Kowboy, Sidney’s Candy and Stay Thirsty.

The Racing Age Section has been extremely well received in its first two years. The first year produced a $240,000 sale topper and last year, Falling Sky, a 3-year-old colt by Lion Heart, sold for $425,000. Consigned by Off the Hook LLC, the colt was purchased by Justin Casse, Agent. Racing for Newtown Anner Stud, James Covello and Joseph Bulger, the colt produced immediate dividends, winning the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs.

Current information about OBS sales, consignors and graduates is now also available via social media sites Facebook and Twitter. A link on the homepage directs users to either site.

Louies Flower scores in Remington Springboard Mile Stakes

Wesley Melcher’s Louies Flower stalked the pace in the $250, 000 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes on Saturday, then fought relentlessly down the stretch and prevailed by a neck. It’s the first stakes victory for the 2-year-old Florida-bred colt by Flower Alley, sold for $25,000 by Shadybrook Farm (Michael Yates), Agent, at the 2012 OBS August Sale. His third straight win leaves him with a 5-3-1-0 record and earnings of $190, 083.

Silverton Hill LLC’s Simmstown racked up his first stakes win in Saturday’s $75,000 Kenny Noe Jr. Handicap at Calder, taking command on the turn and easing away to a 1-1/4 length victory, with fellow OBS graduate Imperial Czar (October ’08) checking in third. It’s the third win in six starts this year for the 5-year-old son of Limehouse, now 15-4-1-3 with $145,640 in earnings. He was sold for $155,000 by Stephens Thoroughbreds, Agent for Audley Farm, at the 2010 OBS March Sale.  watch his under tack work

Boat Trip takes the Hollywood Turf Express Handicap

James Hirschmann III & B.J. Wright’s Boat Trip trailed in the early going of Sunday’s $99, 998 Hollywood Turf Express Handicap at Hollywood Park, but came running on the outside down the stretch and got up in the final yards to win by half a length. Fellow OBS graduate Unbridled’s Note (March ’11) finished in a triple dead-heat for second.  It’s the second stakes win for the 4-year-old Harlan’s Holiday colt, sold for $100,000 by Bo Hunt, Agent, at the 2011 OBS March Sale. The victory gives him a 14-5-1-2 record and $253,196 in earnings. watch his under tack work

Egg Drop captures Hollywood’s Matriarch Stakes

Little Red Feather Racing’s Egg Drop scored her first grade one victory in Sunday’s $251, 000 Matriarch Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park, battling back after being headed in the stretch and wining by a nose. It’s the third straight graded stakes win for the 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by Alphabet Soup, sold for $12,000 by Janie Roper, Agent, at the 2010 OBS August Sale. The win gives her a 12-6-2-2 record and $494,020 in earnings.

Martin Racing Stable LLC’s Marchman posted his first stakes victory in the $75,000 Woodchopper Stakes at Fair Gounds on Saturday, going right to the front and staying there all the way en route to a comfortable 2-3/4 length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Brown Almighty (April ’12) checked in third. It’s the third win in six tries this year for the 3-year-old Sharp Humor colt, now 8-3-2-1 with earnings of $154,678. After working a quarter in :21 2/5 at the Under Tack Show, he was sold for $90,000 by Seahorse Stables LLC, Agent, at the 2012 OBS April Sale.  watch his under tack video

Flat Out scores in Cigar Mile at Aqueduct

flat_out_the_cigar_mile5Preston Stables LLC’s Flat Out was somewhat overlooked at 6-1 in a deep field in the $753, 000 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct, but the the 7-year-old Florida-bred son of Flatter sat back off a lively pace, rallied wide turning for home and closed relentlessly to get up and win by a length amd a quarter. It’s the third grade one win for Flat Out, sold for $11,000 as a weanling by Thoroughstock, Agent, at the 2006 OBS Fall Mixed Sale. The win gives him a 29-9-5-5 record and earnings of $3,645,383.

Stopchargingmaria wins Aqueduct’s Demoiselle

Repole Stable’s Stopchargingmaria posted her second straight graded stakes win, coming from just off the pace and battling down the stretch to a neck victory in Aqueduct’s $400, 000 Demoiselle Stakes (G2). The 2-year-old Tale of the Cat filly, who won Tempted Stakes (G3) last time, is now 5-3-1-1 and has earned $548,000. She was sold for $220,000 by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, at the 2013 OBS March Sale after working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

Palace, Majestic Stride take Thanksgiving Day stakes

Antonio Miuccio’s Palace rallied wide in Saturday’s $150, 000 Hudson Handicap at Belmont, charged past the leaders in the final seventy yards and scored by a length and  a quarter. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 4-year-old colt by City Zip, sold for $160,000 by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, at the 2011 OBS March Sale. He’s now 13-7-2-2 with $352, 050 in earnings. watch his under tack video

Edward J. Brown Jr., Philip Lebherz and Alan M. Klein’s Majestic Stride, who chased Secret Circle in last year’s Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park, has also returned running from an extended vacation, scoring two straight wins. Trained by Jeff Bonde, the 4-year-old Florida-bred colt by Trippi was sold for $50,000 by Kaizen Sales, Agent, at the 2010 OBS August Sale.

Zensational Bunny wins Woodbine’s Glorious Song Stakes

Gary Barber’s Zensational Bunny is two for two and a stakes winner after going to the lead and never looking back en route to a 3-3/4 length victory over fellow OBS graduate Norquay (April ’13) in the Saturday’s $121, 730 Glorious Song Stakes. Sold for $20, 000 by Eddie Woods, Agent, after working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the 2013 OBS June Sale, the 2-year-old filly by Zensational has earned $103,855 to date. watch her under tack video

West Point Thoroughbreds’ Empire Dreams posted his first stakes victory in the $147,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday, running past the leaders in the final sixteenth and drawing off to a 1-3/4 length victory over fellow OBS graduate Sol the Freud (March ’13). That’s two wins in five starts for the 2-year-old colt by Patriot Act, now 5-2-2-0 with earnings of $173,500. He was sold for $35,000 by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, at the 2013 OBS April Sale. watch his under tack video

Three Diamonds Farm’s Comandante scored his second straight win at Aqueduct on Saturday, pulling away down the stretch to a length and a half victory in the $125,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old gelding by Frost Giant, sold for $35,000 by Pick View Sales, Agent, at the 2012 OBS April Sale. The win gives a 13-3-4-2 record and $210,568 in earnings. watch his under tack video

Charles Deters’ Hip Four Sixtynine ran off his third straight win on Saturday at Delta Downs, circling horses on the turn, taking command in the stretch and then drawing away to a 3-3/4 victory in the $75,000 Sam’s Town Stakes. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-yeasr-old Southern Image colt, now 16-4-3-1 with earnings of $142,027. He was sold for $4,500 by Andy Cant, Agent, at the 2011 OBS August Sale.

Horses of Racing Age Section closing Friday, November 22

Horsemen are reminded that the extended deadline for the Horses of Racing Age Section of the 2014 OBS Winter Mixed Sale is Friday, November 22nd.

Get the Contract for the Horses of Racing Age Section

The sale is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, January 22nd and 23rd, with the optional Under Tack Show set for Monday, January 20th. The OBS Championship Stakes races, run this year for the first time in conjunction with the Winter Mixed Sale, are set for Tuesday, January 21st.

Horses withdrawn prior to December 1st will not incur any fees. In addition, supplemental entries may be accepted after the catalog has been finalized. These entries will be available on the OBS website at www.obssales.com  as well as a supplemental catalog distributed at the sale. At the optional Under Tack Show, horses three and up may gallop or breeze a minimum of three furlongs. Newly turned two-year-olds may only gallop. Video of the under tack show will be available for viewing on the sales grounds and the OBS website.

OBS has received positive feedback on the sale from both buyers and sellers. The Horses of Racing Age section with the under tack show fills a demand for owners looking to add to or adjust the size of their racing stables. Additionally, sellers of in-training horses now have an opportunity to market young, talented horses that may have had to miss juvenile sales. The timing is excellent, with the Tampa, Calder and Gulfstream meets in full swing and Ocala-area training centers, Payson Park, Palm Beach Downs and Palm Meadows occupied with northern racing stables wintering in Florida.

Puddifoot, Bajan capture Saturday stakes races

Trilogy Stable, EICO Stable and Laurie Plesa’s Puddifoot is two for two and a stakes winner after taking charge of Saturday’s $125, 000 Juvenile Filly Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream turning for home and bounding away to a six length victory over fellow OBS graduate Sunset Silhouette (April ’13, August ’12, October ’11). Purchased for $150,000 out of the Eisaman Equine consignment at the 2013 OBS June Sale after working an eighth in :9 4/5, the Red Giant filly has earned $96,600 to date. watch her under tack video

 Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Ronald Frankel and Jerry Frankel’s Bajan picked up her second straight black type win on Saturday at Hollywood, rolling to the front in the final furlong and winning the $100,000 Moccasin Stakes by 2-1/4 lengths over fellow OBS graduate For Emma (April ’13). The 2-year-old daughter of Speightstown was sold by Harris Training Center, Agent, for $80,000 at the 2013 OBS March Sale, after working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. She’s now 5-3-1-0 and has earned $159,150. watch her under tack video

Lone Stable LLC’s Parranda rallied from off the pace in Gulfstream’s $125,000 Millions Filly & Mare Turf Preview Stakes, made the lead in mid-stretch and scored by a length and three quarters, with fellow OBS graduate Millenia (August ’11) checking in third. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 4-year-old Florida-bred daughter of English Channel, now 17-6-6-2 with earnings of $263,955. She was sold for $13,000 by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, at the 2011 OBS April Sale. watch her under tack video
