Racing, Dave Kenney and RAP Racing’s Goldencents bolted right to the front from his outside post in the $920, 000 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), set rapid fractions before opening up at the head of the lane, then cruised down the stretch to a 2-3/4 length victory. It’s the third graded stakes win for the colt by Into Mischief, trained by Doug O’Neill and purchased by his brother Dennis, who plucked him out of the Southern Chase Farm (Greg and Karen Dodd) consignment at the 2012 OBS June Sale for $62,000. Repole Stable’s Stopchargingmaria scored her first graded stakes win in a laugher, taking the lead at the start of Aqueduct’s $250,000 Tempted Stakes (G3) never let it go, putting away the early speed and then bounding away to a 10-3/4 length victory. The 2-year-old Tale of the Cat filly, who won the first baby race at this year’s Saratoga meeting, is now 4-2-1-1 and has earned $308,000. Little Red Feather Racing’s Egg Drop posted her second straight graded stakes win on Sunday, edging fast closing fellow OBS graduate Miss Pippa (March ’11) in the $151,000 Goldikova Stakes (G2) by a head. The 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by Alphabet Soup was sold for $12,000 by Janie Roper, Agent, at the 2010 OBS August Sale. Four for eight this year, she’s now 11-5-2-2 and earnings of $344,020.
The Breeders’ Cup celebrates its 30th anniversary at Santa Anita on Friday and Saturday, and OBS graduates have played a big part in making it racing’s grandest event. Seventeen horses sold by OBS won Breeders’ Cup races, many of them clinching Eclipse Awards.
In the Juvenile Fillies (G1), Dolly Green’s February graduate Brave Raj was the OBS’s first Cup winner, running away with the 1986 edition and earning a divisional title. Charles Cono’s March graduate Stardom Bound, sold after the race for $5.7-million, circled her field on the turn at the 2008 renewal and drew away to her Eclipse Award winning victory, and a year later Nancy Mazzoni’s April graduate She Be Wild got up in the final yards to earn victory and a championship. Concave and Secret Compass will try to add their names to the Juvenile Fillies honor roll this year.
Bond Holder, Conquest Titan, Dance With Fate and Mexikoma go in the Juvenile (G1), seeking win number three for OBS. David Milch, Mark Silverman and Jack Silverman’s Gilded Time wrapped up his Eclipse Award with a score in the 1992 running at Gulfstream, and when Joseph Lacombe’s Favorite Trick ran away with the 1997 renewal at Hollywood Park, his eight for eight campaign earned him the two-year-old championship and selection as Horse of the Year, the first juvenile since Secretariat so honored.
Turf races are a big part of the Breeders’ Cup and OBS grads have taken on the world’s best and come out on top. Quarter B. Farm’s Winter Mixed Sale graduate Buck’s Boy won a championship with a wire to wire victory in the 1998 Turf (G1) at Churchill Downs and Augustin Stable’s champion March graduate Forever Together earned her title with a big late run to capture the 2008 Filly & Mare Turf (G1) at Santa Anita. Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s April grad Stephanie’s Kitten won the 2008 Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and went on to three more graded stakes wins and over $1.6-million in earnings. Unbeaten My Conquestadory will try to win this year’s edition of the race. Tale of a Champion will carry the OBS banner in the 2013 Turf (G1), Ontology goes in the Juvenile Turf (G1) and Boat Trip, Capo Bastone, Jeranimo, Reneesgotzip and Unbridled’s Note try the Turf Sprint (G1).
OBS grads are absent from this year’s Ladies Classic (G1) but two fillies earned championships in the race when it was called the Distaff. Richard J. and Martha J. Stephen and The Thoroughbred Corp.’s February graduate Jewel Princess earned her title with a victory over the great Serena’s Song in the 1996 Distaff at Woodbine and Adena Springs Farm’s Ginger Punch splashed to an Eclipse Award clinching victory in the slop at Monmouth in 2007.
The sprint races provide fireworks at every renewal of the Breeders’ Cup. Starship Truffles will try to follow in the footsteps of Pinnacle Racing Stables and Bill Kaplan’s champion Musical Romance, an OBS April graduate whose 2011 Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) victory earned her a division title.
OBS sold Bluegrass Hall’s Hightail (2012) and Michael E. Pegram , Karl Watson, Paul Weitman’s Secret Circle (2012), winner of the only two editions of the discontinued Juvenile Sprint, but Secret Circle and Majestic Stride will try to add their names to the roster of Sprint (G1) winners sold by OBS. That list includes Sherre Parbhoo’s April graduate Trinniberg, back to defend his title in the race he won last year at Santa Anita, but the first OBS grad to win the race was Jill E. Robinson’s Cherokee Run, a photo finish winner in 1994 en route to an Eclipse Award. Pegram, Watson and Weitman’s March graduate Midnight Lute won back to backSprints, earning the 2007 sprint championship with a powerful performance at a muddy Monmouth Park and scoring an encore victory in 2008 at Santa Anita.
Flat Out takes on the best horses in training in the 2013 Classic (G1), trying to become the second OBS grad to win North America’s biggest prize. Carolyn Hine’s Skip Away had numerous highlights, including a victory over the mighty Cigar in the 1996 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). But his most devastating performance came in the 1997 Classic, taking over leaving the backstretch and drawing away to a six length victory, wrapping up an Eclipse Award.
The dominance of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company in the juvenile marketplace is confirmed by the success of OBS sale graduates at the races. This year is no exception as eight of the twenty OBS graduates entered in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita came out of this year’s OBS juvenile sales. Only three youngsters sold at competing juvenile venues are entered in the four races for two-year-olds at the two-day event at Santa Anita.

A Shares Stables’ May Shares took on colts in the $100, 000 Island Sun Stakes on the Belmont Park turf course and won her first stakes race convincingly, opening up in the stretch and scoring by 4-1/2 lengths, with fellow OBS graduate Sidearm (April ’13) checking in third. The 2-year-old daughter of Stonesider was purchased for $20,000 out of the Casey Newick consignment at the 2011 OBS Fall Mixed Sale. She’s now 3-2-1-0 and has earned $116,000.
Big Chief Racing LLC’s Miss Machiavelli picked up her first stakes win on Saturday, coming from off the pace to win Golden Gate’s $100,000 Pike Place Dancer Stakes by half a length. Racing’s biggest event, now held over two days, is set for next Friday and Saturday, November 1st and 2nd at Santa Anita. Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner and champion sprinter Trinniberg leads the large group of OBS alumni to the Breeders’ Cup’s 30th renewal, joined by the sensational unbeaten juvenile filly My Conquestadory and ageless Flat Out, taking on the best horses in training in North America’s richest race.

Klein’s Majestic Stride, who chased Secret Circle in last year’s Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park, has also returned running from an extended vacation, scoring two straight wins. Trained by Bill Mott and still a tough out at the age of seven, the Florida-bred son of Flatter took home the Westchester Stakes (G3) and Suburban Handicap (G2) this year. His five graded stakes wins include consecutive victories in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park. Sold for $11,000 as a weanling by Thoroughstock, Agent, at the 2006 OBS Fall Mixed Sale, he’s earned over $3.1-million.
West Point Thoroughbreds’ Toasting trailed in the early going in Sunday’s $100, 000 Dream Rush Stakes at Belmont Park, but circled horses on the turn, hit the front in deep stretch and rolled to a 2-1/4 length win. The 3-year-old graded stakes placed filly’s first stakes win comes in a race named for West Point’s 2006 OBS graduate Dream Rush. The daughter of Wild Rush was a multiple graded stakes winner of $779,364 after she was purchased for $285, 000 at OBS February and later sold for $3.3-milllion as a broodmare prospect. Midwest Thoroughbreds Inc.’s Managed Account picked up his second straight stakes win, taking charge turning for home in Charles Town’s $50,000 Governor’s Cup Handicap on Friday night and sailing to a 2-3/4 length victory. It’s the fifth win in ten trips to the post this year for the 4-year-old colt by Malibu Moon, purchased for $110,000 out of the de Meric Sales consignment at the 2011 OBS April Sale. West Point Thoroughbreds’ Toasting trailed in the early going in Sunday’s $100, 000 Dream Rush Stakes at Belmont Park, but circled horses on the turn, hit the front in deep stretch and rolled to a 2-1/4 length win. The 3-year-old graded stakes placed filly’s first stakes win comes in a race named for West Point’s 2006 OBS graduate Dream Rush. The daughter of Wild Rush was a multiple graded stakes winner of $779,364 after she was purchased for $285, 000 at OBS February and later sold for $3.3-milllion as a broodmare prospect. Toasting, now 12-3-1-4 with earnings of $291,350 was purchased for $175,000 out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2012 OBS March Sale after Florida-bred daughter by Congrats worked an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video
Patsy C. Symons’ Effie Trinket posted her second straight stakes score on Saturday at Belmont, battling down the stretch and winning the $200,000 Ticonderoga Stakes by a nose. A two time OBS graduate, she was sold as a yearling by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, Agent, at the 2011 Winter Mixed Sale before being resold for $105,000 by Everett Livestock at the 2012 OBS April Sale after a quarter in a bullet :20 3/5 at the Under Tack Show. Antonio Miuccio’s Palace rallied wide in Saturday’s $150,000 Hudson Handicap at Belmont, charged past the leaders in the final seventy yards and scored by a length and a quarter. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 4-year-old colt by City Zip, sold for $160,000 by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, at the 2011 OBS March Sale. Mr. Amore Stable’s Ribo Bobo romped to his ninth straight win on Saturday with a 5-3/4 length wire to wire victory in the $100,000 Maryland Million Sprint Handicap. Consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, to the 2010 OBS Winter Mixed Sale, the 5-year-old gelding by Louis Quatorze is now 46-14-4-3 with earnings of $460,155.
Tom and Marilyn Braly’s Tom’s Tribute tried stakes company for the first time in Sunday’s $72,350 Uniformity Stakes on the turf at Santa Anita, ran past the leaders in the stretch and drew out to a 2-1/4 length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Appealing Tale (March ’12) checked in third. Unraced at two, the 3-year-old colt by Lion Heart is now 6-3-2-0 and has earned $138,980. Robert Abbo Racing Stables LLC’s Immortal Eyes used different tactics in Friday’s $50,000 Jefferson County Commission Handicap at Charles Town, but overpowered his rivals and scored by a length and a quarter. Rating just off the speed in the early going, the 8-year-old Florida-bred son of Greatness took over turning for home and cruised to his thirteenth stakes victory. A three time veteran of the OBS sales ring, he was sold at the 2006 Winter Mixed Sale by Adena Springs South then resold at the 2006 August Yearling Sale by Beth Bayer, Agent. Then, consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, to the 2007 February Sale, he brought $220,000 after an working an eighth in :10 3/5 at the Under Tack Show. Horsemen are reminded that the 2014 OBS Winter Mixed Sale, including the Horses of Racing Age Section, is closing on Friday, November 8th. The sale is now scheduled for Wednesday through Friday, January 22nd – 24th, with the optional Under Tack Show set for Monday, January 20th. The OBS Championship Stakes races, run this year for the first time in conjunction with the Winter Mixed Sale, are set for Tuesday, January 21st.
OBS received extremely positive feedback on the sale from both buyers and sellers. The Horses of Racing Age section with the under tack show fills a demand for owners looking to add to or adjust the size of their racing stables. Additionally, sellers of in-training horses now have an opportunity to market young, talented horses that may have had to miss juvenile sales. The timing is excellent, with the Tampa, Calder and Gulfstream meets in full swing and Ocala-area training centers, Payson Park, Palm Beach Downs and Palm Meadows occupied with northern racing stables wintering in Florida.
The Racing Age Section has been extremely well received in its first two years. The first year produced a $240,000 sale topper and last year, Falling Sky, a 3-year-old colt by Lion Heart, sold for $425,000. Consigned by Off the Hook LLC, the colt was purchased by Justin Casse, Agent. Racing for Newtown Anner Stud, James Covello and Joseph Bulger, the colt produced immediate dividends, winning the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs.
While the Mixed Sale deadline remains November 8th, late entries for the Horses of Racing Age section will be accepted through November 22nd. Horses withdrawn prior to December 1st will not incur any fees. In addition, supplemental entries may be accepted after the catalog has been finalized. These entries will be available on the OBS website as well as a supplemental catalog distributed at the sale. At the optional Under Tack Show, horses three and up may gallop or breeze a minimum of three furlongs. Newly turned two-year-olds may only gallop. Video of the under tack show will be available for viewing on the sales grounds and the OBS website.
A mare by Lion Heart and a weanling filly by Wilburn each brought $70, 000 to share honors atop the Open Session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2013 Fall Mixed Sale.
Hip No. 264, Because I Like It, a 5-year-old daughter of Lion Heart out of stakes winner Code Blum, was sold to Coteau Grove Farm LLC. The stakes placed chestnut mare, consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, was sold in foal to High Cotton.
Christine Hosier, Agent, bought Hip No. 359, a weanling daughter of Wilburn consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent. The chestnut filly is out of Milliondollarbill by Speightstown, a half sister to graded stakes winner Brooke’s Halo.
Hip No. 291, a weanling colt by Gone Astray consigned by Perrone Sales, Ltd., Agent, was sold to Machmer Hall for $62,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Courtly Choice, by Doneraile Court, a half sister to stakes placed Let’s Get Crackin.
Hip No. 336, a weanling colt by Bustin Stones consigned by Casey Newick LLC, was sold to Jumping Jack Racing for $48,000. The bay colt is out of I Drink Alone, by Intidab, a half sister to stakes winner Pavo.
Hip No. 365, Hot Roots, a 4-year-old stakes placed filly by Indian Charlie went to Jay Goodwin, Agent, for $41,000. Consigned by Get Away Farm, Agent, the dark bay or brown filly is out of Mother, by Lion Hearted, a half sister to stakes placed Professor Biggs.
Hip No. 180, A Rose for You, an 8-year-old stakes winning mare by Orientate consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, went to Arindel Farm LLC, for $40,000. The bay mare, in foal to First Dude, is out of stakes winner Reallyaroan, by Imperial Falcon.
Hip No. 357, a weanling colt by First Dude consigned by Top Lines Sales, Agent, was sold for $40,000 to Yankee Farm. The chestnut colt is out of stakes placed Marrakech Dawn, by Regal Intention, a half sister to stakes winner Thistyranthasclass.
For the session, 153 horses grossed $1,482,100 compared with 164 horses selling for a total of $1,212,500 at last year’s Open Session. The average price was $9,687, up 31% from $7,393 a year ago, while the median price was $5,000, compared with $5,100 in 2012. The buyback percentage was 17.7%; it was 20.8% last year.
At Tuesday’s Consignor Preferred session, 118 horses sold for a total of $2,666,000 compared with 123 horses selling for a total of $1,740,900 at last year’s Consignor Preferred session. The average was $22,593, up 59.6% compared with $14,154 in 2012 while the median price soared 68.1% from $11,000 last year to $18,500. The buyback percentage was 14.5%; it was 18% a year ago.
The sale topper was Hip No. 73, a Kitten’s Joy weanling filly consigned by Top Line Sales LLC and sold to Machmer Hall for $110,000. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Brickyard Gal, by Proud Citizen, a half sister to graded stakes winner Moviesta.
