A new Horses of Racing Age section will be added to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2014 Fall Mixed Sale. The sale, scheduled for October 14th – 16th, closes on August 1st, but horses may be entered in the Racing Age section through September 22nd. Two-year-olds as well as older horses may be entered in the Racing Age section, and can be showcased at the optional Under Tack Show.
“Adding a Racing Age section and Under Tack Show to the Fall Sale gives horsemen the opportunity to market two-year-olds who were not ready for the spring juvenile sales as well as horses with proven form,” said OBS sales director Tod Wojciechowski. “It also offers racing stables a new opportunity to buy and sell horses prior to the end of the year. We are unique in that we are the only sales company with an under tack show for horses of racing age.”
The Racing Age section will have an online catalog on the OBS website at www.obssales.com and a printed catalog available at the sales grounds in October. The online catalog features a sortable master index and links to daily pedigree updates.
The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website and via the Blood-Horse and Daily Racing Form websites. The workouts will also be recorded and videos will be available on the website, by individual hip number or entire Under Tack session. They will also be available for viewing in the video room adjacent to the Horsemen’s Lounge in the sales pavilion as well as several kiosks in the lobby and the covered walking ring. In-room viewing is available at The Courtyard by Marriott, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton. Under Tack Show results are posted on the OBS website.

Braly Family Trust’s Tom’s Tribute tracked the pace in Sunday’s $300, 000 Eddie Read Stakes (G1) at Del Mar, took over in the lane and scored his first graded stakes win by a length and a quarter, with Spring Up (August ’11) checking in third. It’s the third stakes victory for the 4-year-old colt by Lion Heart, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5 before he was purchased for $310,000 by Marilyn Braly on the recommendation of Gary Young from Wavertree Stables, Inc. Thomas D. Shank and Stan Young’s Good Lord captured Ellis Park’s $50,000 Don Bernarhardt Stakes for the third straight year on Saturday, leading from gate to wire and holding on to win by a neck. That’s eight stakes wins for the 7-year-old Florida-bred son of Greatness, now 60-13-9-12 with earnings of $645,454. Repole Stable’s Stopchargingmaria took charge of Saratoga’s $300, 000 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) in the upper stretch and the 3-year-old Tale of the Cat filly ran away from her rivals and scored by five lengths, becoming the 81st OBS graduate to top the million dollar mark in earnings. The fourth OBS grad to win the CCA Oaks, she joins 1992 winner Turnback the Alarm (April ’91), 1995 winner Golden Bri (August “93) and 2006 victor Wonder Lady Anne L (August ’04). Ike & Dawn Thrash, Janet Alley and Sam Alley’s Istanford took Saturday’s $201, 750 San Clemente Stakes (G2) at Del Mar the same way she beat the boys in the Arlington Classic (G3) in May, taking the lead at the break and never looking back, scoring by 2-1/2 lengths with fellow OBS graduate My Conquestadory (March ’13) checking in third. Jack Hendricks and Roger Justice’s East Hall shipped to Thistledown in search of his first stakes win and he got it in the $300,000 Ohio Derby, relaxing off the pace before rallying on the turn, swinging wide for the drive and closing with a rush to get up in the final yards, winning by a head. The 3-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Graeme Hall is a two time OBS graduate, sold first by Summerfield, Agent, at the 2012 August Sale. After working an Under Tack quarter in :21 3/5 at the 2013 April Sale, he was purchased by trainer Bill Kaplan for $55,000 on behalf of Hendricks and Justice out of the Southern Chase Farm, Inc. There are 257 yearlings cataloged for the Selected Yearling Sale, representing a forty-five percent increase in size over last year. Scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th, it will begin at 10:30 a.m. Conformation photos of the Selected yearlings will be in the website beginning on or about August 4th.
The two-day Open Sale, which has grown by nearly twenty percent, features 773 yearlings. Hip No.’s 259 – 648 sell on Wednesday, August 27th and Hip No.’s 649 – 1037 will be offered Thursday, August 28th. Both Open sessions also begin at 10:30 a.m.
An important source of quality horses throughout its history, the OBS August Sale has produced twenty-two millionaires, a roster that includes Eclipse Award winners Groovy, Kodiak Kowboy, Not Surprising, Silver Charm and Xtra Heat. Since the beginning of 2013, 100 August alumni have won or placed in 177 stakes races, and last year’s August graduates have begun to make their mark. Sixteen precocious 2-year-olds are already winners and Cecil N. Peacock’s Story to Tell is the first stakes winner, taking the W.L. Proctor Memorial Stakes at Los Alamitos after running second in the Santa Anita Juvenile Stakes.
The sale features a strong sire roster, with yearlings by stallions residing on the upper reaches of the general sire list. Top ten sires Speightstown, Kitten’s Joy, Giant’s Causeway, Curlin and Lemon Drop Kid have OBS August offspring, as well as proven stallions Bellamy Road, City Zip, Ghostzapper, Freud, Harlan’s Holiday, Leroidesanimaux (BRZ), Mineshaft, Scat Daddy, Stormy Atlantic, Street Sense and Unbridled’s Song.
OBS August is always a showcase for newcomers to the stallion ranks, and the 2014 sale features the offspring of first crop sires Archarcharch, Cape Blanco (IRE), Drosselmeyer, Dublin, Gio Ponti, Haynesfield, Paddy O’Prado, Sidney’s Candy, Tizway, Trappe Shot, Twirling Candy, Uncle Mo and Wilburn. In addition, up and comers Blame, Cowboy Cal, Lookin At Lucky, Majesticperfection, Majestic Warrior, Midnight Lute, Pioneerof the Nile, Super Saver, Tale of Ekati and Warrior’s Reward are all well represented.
Wildcat Heir and Two Step Salsa head the list of Florida-based stallions with offspring in the sale, along with Big Drama, Cool Coal Man, First Dude, Gone Astray, High Cotton, Kantharos and Put It Back.

OBS graduates were in the headlines at Tuesday’s Japan Racing Horse Association Select Sale of yearlings and foals, as a weanling colt by leading Japanese sire Deep Impact (JPN) out of two-time OBS graduate Weemissfrankie was sold for $1, 372, 550 to young Ryouichi Ootuka. The colt is the first foal out of the daughter of Sunriver, consigned first by Summerfield, Agent, to the 2010 August Sale before she was sold for $175,000 by Eddie Woods, Agent, to Joe Ciaglia at the 2011 April Sale. Trained by Peter Eurton and racing for Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stables, Ciaglia Racing LLC & Ron Dyrdek, she won three of five starts including the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) and the Oak Leaf Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita.
A weanling colt by Deep Impact (JPN) out graded stakes winning OBS graduate May Day Rose was sold to David Redvers for $647,039. In the colors of Kaleem Shah and trained by Bob Baffert, the Florida-bred daughter of Rockport Harbor won the Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita and Hollywood’s Railbird Stakes (G3) en route to earnings of early $400,000. Consigned by her breeder Bridlewood Farm to the 2010 OBS March Sale, she failed to meet her reserve but was purchased by trainer Bob Baffert on Shah’s behalf for $220,000 at the OBS June Sale three months later.
A colt out of three time OBS graduate Two Item Limit, also by Deep Impact (JPN), was sold to Hajime Satomi for $647,059. The daughter of Twining was sold first by Beth Bayer to R. Schweiger and Coastable as a weanling at the 1998 Fall Mixed Sale before she was resold to Jockey Club Farm at the 1999 August Yearling Sale. After she was purchased by Joseph Graffeo from Jockey Club Farm for $50,000 at the 2000 March Sale, she was trained by Stephen L. DiMauro and carried Graffeo’s silks to four graded stakes wins and earnings of $1,060,585.
Tucci Stables’ Starless Night jumped from a front-running maiden win on June 28th into Sunday’s $150, 000 Shady Well Stakes at Woodbine and the result was a carbon copy gate to wire win, this time by 2-1/2 lengths. West Point Thoroughbreds’ Empire Dreams was content to relax off the pace in Saturday’s $161,000 New York Derby at Finger Lakes, but circled the field on the far turn, rallied down the middle of track and rolled to a 2-1/4 length victory. It’s the second stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Patriot Act, consigned to the 2013 OBS April Sale by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, and sold to West Point for $35,000 after working an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5. Yukio Baba’s millionaire Best Warrior picked up his second graded stakes win on Sunday at Chukyo Racecourse in Japan, taking the Procyon Stakes (G3) (race video) by a neck. It’s the third straight stakes score for the 4-year-old colt by Lawyer Ron, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 3/5 before he was purchased for $110,000 by trainer Eddie Plesa out of the Eisaman Equine consignment at the 2012 OBS March Sale.
