Big Drama colt tops Selected Yearling Sale

Hip No. 75, a colt by Big Drama out of stakes winner Doc’s Doll, by Out of Place, was sold to George Bolton for $230,000 to top the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2014 Selected Yearling Sale. The chestnut colt, consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, is a half brother to stakes winner Gator Brew.

Hip No. 21, a colt by Curlin consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, went to John Patitucci, Juan Vazquez, Agent, for $185,000. The bay colt is out of Awesome Fleet, by Awesome Again, a half sister to champion Afleet Alex.

Hip No. 41 also brought $185,000, with the son of Broken Vow going from Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, to Nick de Meric, Agent. The chestnut colt, out of graded stakes placed Cameron Crazies, by Lion Heart, is a half brother to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Prudhoe Bay.

Hip No. 24, a daughter of Yes It’s True consigned by BryLynn Farm, Inc., was sold for $150,000 to Live Oak Plantation. The bay filly, a half sister to graded stakes winner Circle Unbroken, is out of stakes winner and graded stakes placed Baldomera, by Doneraile Ciourt.

Live Oak also went to $150,000 for Hip No. 29, a bay colt by Yes It’s True out of stakes winner Big Miss, by Chief Honcho, consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent.

Hip No. 132, a Warrior’s Reward filly also brought $150,000, purchased by Bradley Thoroughbred Brokerage out of the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment. The dark bay or brown filly, a half sister to graded stakes winner The Niagara Queen, is out of Inspirational, by Lord At War (ARG).

Hip No. 45, a son of Tale of Ekati consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, was sold for $140,000 to Preston Stables LLC. The dark bay or brown colt is out of stakes winner Charlie Papa, by Indian Charlie.

Ike and Dawn Thrash paid $130,000 for Hip No. 196, a daughter of Include consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Rocket’s Lady, by Whywhywhy, a daughter of graded stakes winner Bella Bella Bella.

For the day, 161 horses sold for a total of $7,597,200 compared with 143 grossing $7,705,000 at the 2013 Selected Yearling Sale. The average price was $47,188 compared with $53,881 last year, while the median was $35,000 compared with $42,000 in 2013. The buyback percentage was 30.9%; it was 13.3% in 2013. Seventeen horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with twelve at last year’s sale.

The sale continues Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with the first of two Open sessions. It will again be streamed live via the OBS, Blood-Horse and Daily Racing Form websites.

Goldencents, Tom’s Tribute score graded stakes wins at Del Mar

W.C. Racing’s Goldencents took no prisoners in Sunday’s $250, 500 Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2) at Del Mar, going right to the early lead, opening up in the stretch and coasting to a 4-1/4 length victory. It’s the fifth graded stakes win for the 4-year-old son of Into Mischief, trained by Doug O’Neill and purchased by his brother Dennis, who bought him out of the Southern Chase Farm (Greg and Karen Dodd) consignment at the 2012 OBS June Sale for $62,000 after he sped a quarter in :21 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Braly Family Trust’s Tom’s Tribute scored his second straight graded stakes win in the $250,500 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2) on Sunday, surging to the lead past the eighth pole and winning by a length. Purchased by Marilyn Braly for $310,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2012 OBS March Sale on the recommendation of Gary Young after he worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5, the 4-year-old colt by Lion Heart is now 13-6-3-1 and has earned $592,880. watch his under tack video

Clear Stars Stable’s Myfourchix was a maiden going into Sunday’s $196,000 Seeking the Ante Stakes at Saratoga, but the 2-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes circled horses on the turn, took command in the lane and drew off to a three length victory. Magalen O. Bryant’s V. E. Day came into Saratoga’s $1, 250, 000 Travers Stakes (G1) riding a three race win streak and the 3-year-old colt by English Channel, overlooked at 19-1, made it four in a row, putting in a sustained run down the stretch that ended in victory by a nose in the last jump. It’s his second stakes win and gives him a 6-4-1-0 record and $829,010 in earnings. Michael House’s Big John B tried stakes company for the first time Saturday in the $201,250 Del Mar Handicap (G2), rallied on the turn to take command in the stretch then drew off to 5-1/4 length victory. It’s the sixth win in nine starts this year for the 5-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Hard Spun, now 28-11-5-3 with earnings of $458,805. Johnson, Frank Coniglio, Richard Rendina and Frank Ferrigine’s lightly raced Speed Seeker scored her first stakes win in Saturday’s $154,417 Ontario Colleen Stakes (G3) on the turf at Woodbine, rallying from off the pace, finding room between horses a furlong from home and charging to a 4-3/4 length victory. Purchased for $10,000 out of the Classic Quarter Farm consignment at the 2012 OBS August Sale, the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Heatseeker (IRE) is now 3-2-0-0 and has earned $118,915 to date.

Alex & JoAnn Lieblong’s The Big Beast jumped into stakes company for the first time in the $500, 000 King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, and although a bit further from the lead turning for home than expected, put in a determined run down the stretch and got up to win by a neck in the final strides. Consigned by Ends Well, Agent, to the 2013 OBS April Sale, the 3-year-old colt by Yes It’s True was purchased by the Lieblongs for $150,000 after working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. August Yearling Sale begins Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2014 August Yearling Sale begins Tuesday, August 26^th. There are 1, 037 yearlings cataloged for the three-day sale, which gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with 258 horses offered in the Selected session. The Sale continues with two Open sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, August 27^th and 28^th. Hip No.’s 259-648 will be sold Wednesday; Hip No.’s 649-1037 sell on Thursday. Both Open sessions also start at 10:30 a.m.

Conformation photographs of Selected yearlings may be viewed through the Sortable Master Index on the OBS website at obssales.com. The Master Index also includes links to pedigree updates via equineline.com. The sale will be streamed live on the OBS, Blood-Horse and DRF websites.

An important source of quality horses throughout its history, the OBS August Sale has produced twenty-two millionaires, a roster that includes Eclipse Award winners Groovy, Kodiak Kowboy, Not Surprising, Silver Charm and Xtra Heat. Since the beginning of 2013, 108 August alumni have won or placed in 193 stakes races, with Rustlewood Farm’s Prudhoe Bay and Ike & Dawn Thrash, Janet Alley and Sam Alley’s Istanford the most recent headline makers.

OBS Sprint Stakes winner Prudhoe Bay, consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, to the 2012 OBS August Sale, captured Monmouth’s Jersey Shore Stakes (G3) on August 16^th for his first graded stakes win, giving him earnings of $191,535. A 3-year-old Florida-bred son of Songandaprayer, his half brother by Broken Vow (Hip No. 41) sells in the 2014 OBS Selected Yearling Sale on August 26^th.

A day earlier at Del Mar, Ike & Dawn Thrash, Janet Alley and Sam Alley’s Istanford won the Sandy Blue Handicap in the same front-running fashion she used to win Del Mar’s San Clemente Handicap (G2) in July and beat the boys in the Arlington Classic (G3) in May. The 3-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Istan, also sold by Summerfield at the 2012 August Sale, has earned $332,205 to date.

The August class of 2013 has begun to make its mark. More than two dozen precocious 2-year-olds are already winners and Cecil N. Peacock’s Story to Tell is the first stakes winner, taking the W.L. Proctor Memorial Stakes at Los Alamitos after running second in the Santa Anita Juvenile Stakes.

The sale features a strong sire roster, with yearlings by stallions residing on the upper reaches of the general sire list. Top ten sires Speightstown, Kitten’s Joy, Giant’s Causeway, Curlin and Lemon Drop Kid have OBS August offspring, as well as proven stallions Bellamy Road, City Zip, Ghostzapper, Freud, Harlan’s Holiday, Leroidesanimaux (BRZ), Mineshaft, Scat Daddy, Stormy Atlantic, Street Sense and Unbridled’s Song.

OBS August is always a showcase for newcomers to the stallion ranks, and the 2014 sale features the offspring of first crop sires Archarcharch, Cape Blanco (IRE), Drosselmeyer, Dublin, Gio Ponti, Haynesfield, Paddy O’Prado, Sidney’s Candy, Tizway, Trappe Shot, Twirling Candy, Uncle Mo and Wilburn. Repole Stable’s Stopchargingmaria added Saturday’s $600, 000 Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga to an already glittering resume that includes the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and Black Eyed Susan Stakes (G2). After taking the lead in the lane, the 3-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat was tested, but turned back a late challenge and scored her second grade one victory by three quarters of a length. Now 10-6-1-1 with earnings of $1,414,000, she breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show prior to the 2013 OBS March Sale, then was sold for $220,000 by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent. watch her under tack video

Rustlewood Farm’s Prudhoe Bay forged to the front in the stretch of Monmouth’s $101,000 Jersey Shore Stakes (G3) and stayed there the rest of the way to earn a three quarter length victory. It’s the first graded stakes win for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Songandaprayer, winner of the OBS Sprint Stakes this past January. Consigned by Summerfield, Agent, to the 2012 OBS August Sale, he has three stakes wins to his credit, a 9-4-1-1 record and $191,535 in earnings. His half brother by Broken Vow (Hip No. 41) sells in the 2014 OBS Selected Yearling Sale on August 26.

Tucci Stables’ Imperial Dream is two for two and a stakes winner after battling for the early lead in Saturday’s $137,626 Vandal Stake at Woodbine, putting away the speed at the top of the stretch and hitting the wire first by a length and three quarters. The 2-year-old colt by Stormy Atlantic, with earnings of $120,077 to date, worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5 before he was purchased for $70,000 out of the SAB Sales (Scott A. Yukio Baba’s champion Asia Express sat just off the pace in Sunday’s $750, 000 Leopard Stakes (G3) at Niigata Racecourse, took over a furlong from the wire and drew off to a 3-1/2 length victory. It’s the second graded stakes win for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Henny Hughes, voted Japan’s champion two-year-old colt in 2013. The latest OBS graduate to top the million dollar mark in earnings, he’s now 7-4-1-0 with estimated U.S. earnings of over $1.4-million. Margaret & David Wimer’s Harlan’s Honor led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of Sunday’s $61,200 Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park, taking the lead at the start and never looking back en route to a four length victory. Perpetual Novena (March ’14, August ’13) was second, half a length ahead of late running Nicky’s Brown Miss (March ’14). That’s two wins in three trips to the post for the 2-year-old daughter of Harlan’s Holiday, who has earned $63,250 to date. It’s the sixth win in nine starts this year for the 5-year-old mare by Mater Command, sold for $27,000 by Andy Cant, Agent at the 2011 OBS April Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 3/5. Clyde Rice’s Champagne Ruby had to wait for running room in Saturday’s $50,000 Niagara Stakes at Finger Lakes, but shook loose in mid-stretch and then drew away late to win by 2-3/4 lengths. It’s the second stakes win for the 3-year-old daughter of Utopia (JPN), now 11-3-2-1 with earnings of $142,335. She was sold for $5,000 by Carapan Farm LLC (Ed & Diane Gregory) at the 2012 OBS Winter Mixed Sale.

Loooch Racing Stable, Inc.’s Caviar N Champagne had to battle for the lead in Sunday’s $50,000 Vicacious Handicap at Belterra Park, but once she got it, the 5-year-old Formal Dinner mare opened up five lengths and then coasted home a 2-3/4 length winner. It’s her fifth stakes score, and leaves her with a 29-9-6-4 record and $295,404 in earnings. She was sold for $13,000 by Lynne Boutte, Agent, at the 2010 OBS August Sale.

Antonino Miuccio’s Palace was off half a beat slowly in Saratoga’s $350, 000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) on Saturday, but chased favored frontrunning Happy My Way the whole way before running past him in the final strides and scoring by a length. Fellow OBS graduate Falling Sky (January ’13) checked in third. The latest OBS millionaire, the 5-year-old son of City Zip is now 20-10-5-2 and has earned $1,009,550. New March format kicks off 2015 OBS Juvenile Sale Schedule

The March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training will kick off the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2015 two-year-old sale schedule on March 17 with a new open-style format designed to provide buyers with an expanded selection of horses and adding another session to the sale.

Three sessions, set for Tuesday – Thursday, March 17– 19, 2015, will be preceded by the Under Tack Show on Wednesday through Friday, March 11 – 13. While no longer carrying the Selected moniker, the March Sale will continue to offer a high quality group of horses with top physicals and solid pedigrees that buyers have become accustomed to in previous years, as well as the addition of the next tier of horses that have advanced through their early training and prepared to showcase their talents in March.

Performance on the track at the highest levels of the sport continues to highlight the OBS Two Year Old Sales as a prime source of quality racehorses, on display this past weekend with victories by March graduates Tom’s Tribute in Del Mar’s Eddie Read Stakes (G1) and millionaire Stopchargingmaria in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga.

“The evolution of the juvenile market is telling us that buyers prefer a larger and more varied sample than they have in the past,” said OBS sales director Tod Wojciechowski. “We plan to monitor our entries so as to blend our usual March sale offerings with an additional group of precocious, athletic horses. The result of the past few sales seasons proves that buyers are responding to the quality as well as quantity of the offerings, not the date and title on the catalog cover.”

Initial response to the new format by consignors has been enthusiastic. “I think this is going to be great.” stated Nick de Meric, “The new format will certainly allow us to increase the variety of horses we offer and will be attractive not only to buyers accustomed to the March sale, but also new buyers who may not have considered coming to this sale in the past.”

Trainer Bret Calhoun also applauded the change. “There have been times that I or my owners bypassed the March sale because we didn’t feel there would be enough horses within our budget. This new format definitely changes that and makes coming to the March sale a must, regardless of how much we have to spend.”

The four-day Spring Sale is set for Tuesday, April 21 through Friday, April 24. There will be six Under Tack sessions, beginning Monday, April 13 and continuing through Saturday, April 18.

“Both consignors and buyers were pleased with the extended Under Tack Shows we began in June,’ said OBS board Chairman Mike O’Farrell. “Shorter sessions allow for flexibility to react to inclement weather, and level the playing field for consignors.”

The June Sale of Two Year Olds and Horses of Racing Age is planned for four sessions, beginning Tuesday, June 16 and ending Friday, June 19. The six-session June Under Tack Show gets underway on Monday, June 8 and runs through Saturday, June 13.
