Beginning with the upcoming March Sale of Two Year Olds under tack show, Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company will initiate implementation of Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) guidelines for controlled therapeutic medications. The first phase will include adopting the ARCI medication schedule for administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and bronchodilators. OBS will incorporate the entire ARCI medication schedule by the 2016 Two Year Old Sale season. The policy regarding the use of a riding crop has also been refined.
“In addition to existing state regulations, random testing during our breeze shows has been in effect for many years including OBS restrictions that limit the use of medications and prohibit the use of all Class 1 and Class 2 drugs, Salix, and procaine penicillin, ” said OBS president Tom Ventura. “Adding the ARCI guidelines will enhance our current policy and promote the movement toward uniform race day medication rules throughout the country.”
Ongoing efforts to create a uniform medication policy have been led by The Jockey Club collaborating with many industry groups, including the ARCI and the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC). Many racing states have adopted or are in the process of adopting the model rule policies. A bill that would have the state of Florida implementing the ARCI Model Rules by January of 2016 has been introduced into the state Senate and House of Representatives.
“OBS fully supports the bill being considered by the Florida legislature at the upcoming legislative session,” said OBS chairman Mike O’Farrell . “It is incumbent upon leaders in the industry to take steps to implement policies that promote and protect the integrity of the game. This is a step in the right direction.”
Modifications to the policy for use of a riding crop at an under tack show will also go into effect at the OBS March Sale. At any time during a breeze, a rider may only use the riding crop while both hands are holding the reins and may not strike the horse behind the girth. A rider is prohibited from striking the horse in any manner beyond the finish line. In situations where the safety of the horse or rider is in jeopardy, a riding crop may be used in front of the girth. Excessive whipping before the beginning of the work or in preparation for a breeze is prohibited.
The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2015 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com. A total of 610 juveniles have been cataloged for the two-day expanded format OBS sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17th and 18th, with both sessions beginning at 11:00 a.m. The extended Under Tack Show will span three days, beginning Wednesday, March 11th with Hips 1 – 203. Hips 204 – 406 will go Thursday, March 12th and Hips 407 – 610 will go Friday, March 13th. All three session will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF and Blood-Horse websites.
Long a source of top class racehorses, the OBS March Sale has produced six champions, 21 millionaires and five winners of six Breeders’ Cup races. Since the beginning of 2014, 92 OBS March graduates have won or placed in 176 stakes races, winning 63 of them including 26 graded stakes. Six March graduates accounted for eight grade one victories, including six of the 15 grade one races at the 2014 Saratoga meeting.

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company will hold its 2015 March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17th and 18th. The Under Tack Show will be held over three sessions from March 11th through March 13th. Both sale sessions will start at 11:00 a.m. and the Under Tack sessions will begin each morning at 8:00 a.m.
“With just over six hundred horses in the catalog, two sale sessions will be more beneficial for both buyers and sellers, ” said OBS president Tom Ventura. “Three Under Tack sessions provide flexibility to adapt to weather conditions and affords buyers more time in the afternoon to evaluate potential purchases. The extended Under Tack format was well received last year.”
“The goal when we set out to expand the sale was to continue to attract the quality offerings expected at OBS March while adding another group of precocious and athletic horses,” said OBS director of sales Tod Wojciechowski. “The response has been excellent and reflected in the catalog.”

Hip No. 508, Amazing Littlelady, a 4-year-old daughter of Unbridled’s Song was purchased by Machmer Hall for $87,000. Consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, the bay filly is out of stakes winner Amazing Buy, by High Yield, a half sister to Sovereign Award winning graded stakes winner Alpha Bettor. Her 3-year-old full sister, Just Like Pop, Hip No. 121, was sold yesterday by for $70,000.
Hip No. 489, All Day Alice, a 3-year-old daughter of Posse consigned by Wes Carter, was sold for $75,000 to Ragnar H. Korthase Equine. The chestnut filly, whose three eighths in :33 2/5 was co-fastest at the Under Tack Show, is out of stakes placed Hay Allison, by Hay Halo.
Carter also consigned Hip No. 494, Edisto Bay, a 3-year-old son of Bullsbay sold to Louis Linder for $72,000. The chestnut colt is out of stakes placed Immune to Gloom, by Citidancer, a half sister to stakes placed Dirge.
Hip No. 498, Foxy Posse, a 3-year-old Posse filly also brought $72,000, going to Mersad Metanovic Bloodstock LLC. Consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, the chestnut filly, who turned in three eighths in :33 3/5, is out of Just Parker, by Forest Camp, a half sister to stakes winner Stormin’ Lyon.
Patrice Miller, EQB, Inc., Agent for Edward McAlvain, went to 72,000 for Hip No. 504, a 3-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent. The gray or roan colt, who breezed three eighths in :34 1/5, is out of stakes placed Shaunavon, by El Prado (IRE), a full sister to graded stakes winner Sweet and Ready.
For the Horses of Racing Age section, 70 horses grossed $1,200,700, compared with 98 selling for a total of $1,608,900 last year. The average was $17,153 compared to $16,417 a year ago, while the median was $7,350 compared to $10,000 in 2014. The buyback percentage was 16.7%; it was 21.6% in 2014.
Hip No. 341, a Tiz Wonderful colt consigned by Select Sales, Agent, was sold to Mike Recio, Agent for Rockbridge Bloodstock for $50,000 to top the sale’s Open Session. The chestnut yearling colt, a full bother to stakes winner Bourbonize, is out of Brown Eyes, by Halo’s Image, a half sister to stakes winner CaptainVideo.
Hip No. 366, a son of Put It Back consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, was sold to Nick de Meric, Agent for $40,000. The dark bay or brown yearling colt, a half brother to champion and Horse of the Year Good Ba Ba, is out of Elle Meme, by Zilzal.
Hip No. 266, Bella Couture, a 7-year-old bay mare by Pulpit consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, went to Get Away Farm for $38,000. In foal to Soldat, she’s out of graded stakes winner Sabellina, by Langfuhr.
Hip No. 363, a yearling son of Overdriven consigned by Select Sales, Agent, was sold to Arindel Farm LLC for $32,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Double Bridled, by Broken Vow, a half sister to stakes winner Notgivinmyloveaway.
Hip No. 203, a 4-year-old daughter of Curlin consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, was also sold for $32,000, going to Arboritanza Racing. The chestnut filly, a half sister to stakes placed Lady Malkin, is out of stakes placed Lady Dynasty, by Richter Scale.
For the Open session, 141 horses sold for a total of $1,088,100 compared with 209 horses bringing $1,754,900 in 2014. The average price was $7,717 compared with $8,397 a year ago, while the median price was $4,000 compared with $5,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 16.6%; it was 25.9% in 2014.
Next on the OBS agenda is the March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. With its new expanded format, it is scheduled for March 17 – 18, with the Under Tack Show set for March 11 – 13, beginning each morning at 8:00 a.m.
