Joey Freshwater takes the Runhappy Stakes

Winning Move Stable’s Joey Freshwater sat just off the pace in Saturday’s $175,000 Runhappy Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct, grabbed the lead inside the final furlong then held off a late charge to win by a neck. It’s the second graded stakes victory for the 4-year-old colt by Jimmy Creed, trained by Linda Rice, now 16-6-2-2 with $480,780 in earnings. Gabladon (RyanThompson)

Soldi Stable LLC’s Gabaldon (Gone Astray – Valuable Miss) is on his way to Royal Ascot after a front-running 1-1/4 length victory in his debut on Saturday in the $110,000 Royal Palm Juvenile Stakes at Gulfstream Park.  Consigned by Get Away Farm, Agent, to the 2023 OBS October Yearling Sale, the 2-year-old Florida-bred son of Gone Astray was purchased by Soldi Stables LLC for $9,000. Trained by Jose Francisco D’Angelo, he has earned $57,500 and a trip to Ascot.

Winngate Stables LLC’s Kathleen O. was last of five in Sunday’s $100,000 Serena’s Song Stakes at Monmouth Park, but swung out for the drive, ran past the leaders in the lane and was best by three-quarters at the wire. Trained by Shug McGaughey, the multiple graded stakes winning 5-year-old daughter of Upstart has compiled a 12-5-3-0 career record and earned $570,635. She’s a two-time OBS graduate, sold by Stuart Morris at the 2020 Fall Mixed Sale, then purchased for $275,000 out of the Niall Brennan Stables consignment at the 2021 Spring Sale after working an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5.  watch her under tack video     Spring Sale walking video

Hronis Racing LLC’s Tapalo (Tapiture – Agent Romanoff) went right to the lead at the start of Sunday’s $100,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes at Santa Anita and never looked back en route to a seven length victory, with fellow OBS graduate Tessuto (Munnings – Cayman Croc) checking in third. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old son of Tapiture, a two-time OBS graduate, sold by Stuart Morris at the 2022 Winter Mixed Sale, then purchased or $55,000 out of the Jose Munoz consignment at the 2023 March Sale after speeding an Under Tack quarter in :21 flat. OBS June Sale catalog now online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2024 June Two-Year-Olds in Training & Horses of Racing Age Sale is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com. The sale and under tack show were each shifted to start one day earlier than originally scheduled to allow inspection and travel time for those attending Belmont Stakes weekend held at Saratoga this year.

A total of 994 horses, including 980 two-year-olds and 14 Horses of Racing Age, are in the main catalog for the three-day sale, set for Wednesday, June 12th through Friday, June 14th, with all sessions beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Hips 1 – 350 (2YO) will sell on Wednesday and Hips 351 – 700 (2YO) on Thursday. On Friday, Hips 701 – 980 plus supplements (2YO) and Hips 1101 – 1114 plus supplements (HRA) will be offered for sale.  The deadline for supplemental entries is May 22nd, 2024 at noon.

The Under Tack Show will span six days: Tuesday, June 4th through Sunday, June 9th, with all sessions beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Hip Number breakdown will be announced following the closing of supplemental entries.

As always, the Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the TDN, DRF and Blood-Horse, and Past The Wire websites.

The catalog covers are a testament to the quality of OBS June Sale graduates, showcased by OBS June graduate two-time Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Goldencents’ son Mystic Dan’s thrilling victory in the Kentucky Derby (G1). The front cover features Michael Lund Petersen’s Adare Manor (Uncle Mo – Brooklynsway), recent winner of the $1,250,000 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park. George Krikorian’s nine-time graded stakes winning multimillionaire War Like Goddess (English Channel – Misty North) is on the back cover. Her resume includes a win in Saratoga’s Flower Bowl (G1), two straight victories in Aqueduct’s Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1), three straight scores in Keeneland’s Bewitch (G3), two wins in the Glens Falls (G2) at Saratoga and a victory in Gulfstream’s Orchid (G3). Bill Mott trains the 7-year-old daughter of English Channel, now 18-11-2-2 with $2,535,184 earnings. On the board seven times in graded stakes, D.J. Stable LLC’s Webslinger (Constitution – Arana) is shown winning the American Turf Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old son of Constitution was purchased for $50,000 out of the Blue River Bloodstock consignment at the June Sale after speeding three eighths in :33 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Alexandres, LLC’s Il Miracolo (Gun Runner – Tapit’s World) served notice he was a serious horse with a victory in the Smarty Jones (G3) at Parx in August. Since then, he’s been on the board in six graded stakes including a win in the Ghostzapper Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. The 4-year-old son of Gun Runner, trained by Antonio Sano, has compiled a 20-4-5-4 record to date and has earned $726,635. Clark O. Brewster, L. William Heiligbrodt and Corinne Heiligbrodt’s Cogburn (Not This Time – In A Jif) is on the verge of joining the millionaires’ club after taking command of the $600,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes (G2) on the turn, easing away down the stretch and winning by 2-1/4 lengths. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the four-time stakes winning 4-year-old son of Not This Time has compiled a 13-7-2-0 career record and earned $962,730 to date. Amerman Racing LLC’s Trikari (Oscar Performance – Dynamic Holiday), ignored at 47-1 in the American Turf Stakes (G2), was bumped at the start, came off the rail to challenge the leaders after turning for home and drew off late to score by a length and a half. It’s the second stakes victory for the lightly raced 3-year-old colt by Oscar Performance, purchased for $27,500 by Amerman Racing out of the Ordonez Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2022 October Yearling Sale. Rallying from off the pace, she took charge a furlong from home and scored by 2-3/4 lengths over fellow OBS graduate Stormcast (Mitole – Scolara). Antonio Sano trains the 3-year-old daughter of Audible, who went through the ring at the 2023 OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth in 10 1/5. Two OBS grads in the Oaks; Three in the Derby

A pair of graded stakes winning OBS graduates will start in Friday’s Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas sends out Aaron Sones’ Lemon Muffin (Collected – Pelt). The daughter of OBS graduate Collected, who broke her maiden in Oaklawn’s Honeybee Stakes (G3), has compiled a 7-1-4-0 record and has earned $324,000. Keith Asmussen will ride from post six. Lea Farms, LLC’s Power Squeeze (Union Rags – Callmethesqueeze) comes into the race after taking the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) in her last start. It was the third stakes victory for the filly by Union Rags, purchased for $90,000 out of the Halcyon Hammock consignment at the 2023 OBS Spring Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in:10 1/5. The Kentucky Derby (G1) has drawn a trio of OBS graduates.

Trainer Brad Cox sends out Qatar Racing, LLC, Resolute Racing and Marc Detampel’s Just a Touch (Justify – Touching Beauty). The lightly raced colt byJustify broke his maiden at first asking in January and comes into the Derby off consecutive second place finishes in the Gotham (G3) and Blue Grass (G1). He’ll break from post eight under Florent Geroux. Consigned by Scanlon Training & Sales, Agent, to the 2023 OBS Spring Sale, he was sold for $300,000 after breezing an Under Tack eighth in: 9 4/5. Average Joe Racing Stables, Ltd. and Dan Wells’ Mugatu (Blofeld – Union Way) is on the also eligible list for trainer Jeff Engler with Joe Talamo named to ride. The son of Blofeld comes in with a 12-1-1-3 record and $80,570 in earnings. OBS Alters June Sale Schedule

The start of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s June 2024 Two-Year-Olds in Training & Horses of Racing Age Sale and Under Tack Show have each been shifted forward one day to allow additional travel and inspection time for those attending Belmont Stakes weekend held at Saratoga this year from June 6th to June 9th.

The June Sale will now start Wednesday, June 12th and run through Friday, June 14th. All three sessions get underway at 10:00 a.m.

The June Under Tack Show will now begin Tuesday, June 4th and continue through Sunday, June 9th with each session beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Daniel Alonso’s Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator – Twinkling) passed the $2-million mark in earnings with an authoritative victory in Saturday’s $1,250,000 Oaklawn Handicap (G2). Pressing the pace from the start, he went for the lead on the turn, took over in the stretch and eased away to a two-length victory. Trained by Saffie A. Joseph, Jr., the 4-year-old son of Exaggerator has posted six graded stakes wins, compiled a 23-8-2-4 career record and earned $2,291,685. Hip No. 915, a daughter of Nyquist consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was sold to Donato Lanni, Agent for Baoma Corp. for $850,000 to top the fourth and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s record breaking 2024 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The dark bay or brown filly, whose Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5 was the Saturday session’s co-fastest, is out of Amagansett, by Tapit, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner Twirl (IRE).

  • Kimmel & Sallusto, Agent, went to $725,000 for Hip No. 995, a son of McKinzie consigned by Caliente Thoroughbreds, Agent. The bay colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat, is out of Bernadreamy, by Bernardini, a daughter of grade one stakes winner Dream Empress.
  • Hip No. 1005, a son of Twirling Candy who breezed an eighth in a co-fastest :9 4/5 on Saturday was purchased by Marquee Bloodstock, Agent, for $700,000. Consigned by Global Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, the bay colt is out of Bite the Stars, by Flatter, a half sister to graded stakes winner Stanford.
  • Hip No. 1075, a daughter of Practical Joke consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was sold to 30 Year Farm LLC for $700,000. The bay filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is out of Choir, by Pulpit, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winning two-time OBS graduate Emmy Darling.
  • Hip No. 920, a son of Uncle Mo consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, went to D. J. Stable LLC & Robert Cotran for $685,000. The bay colt, who galloped at the Under Tack Show, is a half brother to graded stakes winner First Captain out of graded stakes winner America, by A.P. Indy.
  • Hip No. 974, a daughter of McKinzie consigned by Julie Davies LLC, Agent, was sold to Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC for $675,000. The bay filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is out of Bay Harbor, by Speightstown, a daughter of graded stakes winner Our Khrysty.
  • Three Amigos went to $600,000 for Hip No. 928, a daughter of Tiz the Law consigned by On Point Training & Sales. The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth on Saturday in a co-fastest :9 4/5, is out of stakes placed Animal Appeal, by Leroidesanimaux (BRZ), from the family of stakes winner Triple Card.
  • Hip No. 972, Metallix, a son of Quality Road consigned by Sequel Bloodstock, Agent for Chester & Mary Broman, was sold to Pedro Lanz, Agent for KAS Stables, for $600,000. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Coinage out of grade one stakes winner Bar of Gold, by Medaglia d’Oro.
  • Hip No. 1143, a daughter of McKinzie whose Under Tack quarter in :20 1/5 equaled the track record, was sold to Bill Childs for $600,000. Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, the bay filly is a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Strategic Dreams out of D’fashion, by D’Wilcat.
  • Hip No. 936, a son of Not This Time consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, went to Lael Stable for $550,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed a quarter in :20 4/5, is a half brother to recent stakes winner Laughing Boy out of Applauding, by Congrats, from the family of grade one stakes winner Shedaresthedevil.
  • Hip No. 1064, a son of Nyquist consigned by GOP Racing Stable Corp. was sold to Donato Lanni, Agent for Zedan Racing Stable for $525,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is out of Charlatana by Harlan’s Holiday,  a half sister to graded stakes winner Laoban.
  • Hip No. 1056, a son of Omaha Beach consigned by Richardson Bloodstock, Agent, was purchased by Spendthrift Farm LLC for $510,000. The bay colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat, is out of Caxambas Pass, by Tiznow, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Point of Entry.
  • Bow River Ranch, Hoby Kight, Agent, went to $500,000 for Hip No. 1044, a son of OBS graduate Into Mischief consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is a full brother to graded stakes winner Into Chocolate out of Candy Drawer, by Candy Ride (ARG).
  • Hip No. 1191, a son of Tiz the Law consigned by Britton Peak, Agent, was purchased by Taproot Bloodstock, Agent, for $500,000. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5, is out of Enough, by Arch, a half sister to stakes winner Plenty of Vision.

For the session, 141 horses sold for a total of $19,701,500 compared with 168 horses grossing $22,781,000 at last year’s final session. The average price was $139,727, compared with $135,601 a year ago, while the median price was $65,000, identical to 2023. The buyback percentage was 21.2%; it was 12.9% in 2023.

For the entire Spring Sale, 633 horses sold for a total of $82,086,500, compared to 699 horses bringing $90,405,000, last year. The average was a sale record $129,679, eclipsing last year’s $129,335 while the median price was a sale record $70,000, compared with $65,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 19.2%; it was 16.8% in 2023.

Next on the OBS agenda is the June Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Horses of Racing Age, scheduled for June 11 – 13. The Under Tack is set for Monday, June 3rd though Saturday June 8th.

For the session, 147 horses sold for a total of $15,122,000 compared with 167 horses grossing $20,856,000 at last year’s third session. The average price was $102,871, compared with $124,886 a year ago, while the median price was $65,000 compared with $60,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 21.8%; it was 21.9% in 2023.

Hip No. 365, a daughter of Tiz the Law consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, went to Donato Lanni, Agent for Michael Lund Petersen, for $1,900,000 to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2024 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The bay filly, whose Under Tack quarter on Tuesday was a track record equaling :20 1/5, is out of stakes winner Moonlight Sky, by Sky Mesa, a half sister to champion Abel Tasman.

  • Hip No. 371, a son of American Pharoah consigned by de Meric Sales, was purchased for $925,000 by Donato Lanni for Frank Fletcher Racing Operations. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is a three quarter brother to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Merneith out of More Roses, by Uncle Mo.

Spring Sale’s Opening Session moved back to 12:00 noon

Tuesday’s first session of the 2024 OBS Spring Sale of Two Year Olds in Training has been moved back from 10:30 a.m to 12:00 noon to allow buyers more time for inspection following the alteration of the Under Tack schedule.
