Tiz the Law filly tops Spring Sale’s second session

Hip No. 365, a daughter of Tiz the Law consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, went to Donato Lanni, Agent for Michael Lund Petersen, for $1,900,000 to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2024 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The bay filly, whose Under Tack quarter on Tuesday was a track record equaling :20 1/5, is out of stakes winner Moonlight Sky, by Sky Mesa, a half sister to champion Abel Tasman.

  • Hip No. 371, a son of American Pharoah consigned by de Meric Sales, was purchased for $925,000 by Donato Lanni for Frank Fletcher Racing Operations. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is a three quarter brother to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Merneith out of More Roses, by Uncle Mo.  
  • Hip No. 603, a son of OBS graduate Into Mischief consigned by Scanlon Training & Sales, Agent, was sold to Naohiro Sakaguchi for $925,000. The bay colt, whose Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5 was Wednesday’s co-fastest, is out of grade one stakes winner Separationofpowers, by Candy Ride (ARG).
  • Hip No. 351, a son of Bolt d’Oro also consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, was sold for $800,000 to Three Amigos. The gray or roan colt, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 3/5, is a half brother to stakes winner Paluxy out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Miss Pippa, by Master Command.
  • Hip No. 411, Rookie Racer, a son of Vekoma consigned by Sequel Bloodstock, Agent for Chester & Mary Broman, was sold to Donato Lanni, Agent for Zedan Racing Stable, for $800,000. The dark bay or brown colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at Tuesday’s Under Tack session, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Classy Edition out of Newbie, by Bernardini.
  • Hip No. 477, a son of Oscar Performance consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was purchased by Speedway Stables, LLC for $725,000. The bay colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 on Tuesday was the day’s co-fastest, is a full brother to stakes winner Act a Fool out of Post Script, by Quality Road, a daughter of stakes winner Society Dream (FR).  
  • Hip No. 342, a son of Nyquist consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, went to Donato Lanni for Frank Fletcher Racing Operations for $675,000.  The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is a half brother to graded stakes placed Sonic Brees out of Miss Hetty, by Congrats.
  • Lael Stable went to $600,000 for Hip No. 468, a daughter of Justify who breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. Consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, the chestnut filly is out of stakes placed Pink Twist, by Malibu Moon, a half sister to stakes winner Ostrolenka.
  • Hip No. 417, a son of Curlin consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was purchased for $575,000 by Donato Lanni for Frank Fletcher Racing Operations. The chestnut colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat, is out of stakes winner Noble and a Beauty, by Noble Causeway, from the family of grade one stakes winner and leading sire Tapit.
  • Hip No. 458, a daughter of Omaha Beach consigned by Gene Recio, Agent, went to Lael Stable for $430,000. The bay filly, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat, is out of Perfect View, by Arch, from the family of grade one stakes winner War of Will.
  • Hip No. 479, a daughter of Vekoma consigned by Mayberry Farm, Agent, went to Stone Bridge Farm for $410,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who breezed an eighth on Tuesday in a co-fastest :9 4/5, is a half sister to grade one stakes placed Alys Beach out of Pray for Leslie, by Bernardini.
  • Hip No. 454, a daughter of Practical Joke whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest on Tuesday, was purchased by Fergus Galvin, Agent, for $400,000. The bay filly, consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, is a half sister to stakes winner Sydney Freeman out of graded stakes winner Peach Brew, by Milwaukee Brew.
  • Hip No. 466, a son of OBS graduate Into Mischief consigned by S G V Thoroughbreds LLC (Steven Venosa), Agent, was sold to Spendthrift Farm / MKW Racing and Breeding LLC for $400,000. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5, is out of graded stakes placed Pine Needles, by Giant’s Causeway, a daughter of grade one stakes winner Meridiana (GER).
  • Mike Ryan, Agent, went to $400,000 for Hip No. 530, a daughter of Nyquist whose eighth in: 9 4/5 was co-fastest at Wednesday’s Under Tack session. Consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, the chestnut filly is a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winnerAnother Miracle out of stakes winner Retraceable, by Medaglia d’Oro.  

For the session, 171 horses sold for a total of $25,841,500 compared with 189 horses grossing $24,022,000 at last year’s second session. The average price was $151,120, compared with $127,101 a year ago, while the median price was $75,000 compared with $60,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 18.9%; it was 16.7 % in 2023.
