August Yearling Sale begins Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2016 August Yearling Sale begins Tuesday, August 23rd. There are 1047 yearlings cataloged for the three-day sale, which gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with 274 horses offered in the Selected session. The Sale continues with two Open sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, August 24^th and 25^th. Hip No.’s 275 – 660 will be sold Wednesday; Hip No.’s 661- 1047 sell on Thursday. Both Open sessions also start at 10:30 a.m.

Conformation photographs of Selected yearlings may be viewed through the Sortable Master Index on the OBS website at obssales.com. The Master Index also includes links to pedigree updates via equineline.com. The sale will be streamed live on the OBS, Blood-Horse and DRF websites. The website now includes a Spanish language section which can be accessed from the home page. The section’s index links to information for consignors and buyers, as well as press releases and important general information.

Long a source of quality horses, the OBS August Sale has produced 24 international millionaire graduates, including the recent Japanese graded stakes winner A Shin Bullseye. Fifteen August Sale graduates have won graded stakes since the beginning of 2015. Their combined hammer price was $842,500 and they have earned more than $6.9 million to date. The latest August graduate star is Anthony Fanticola and Joseph Scardino’s unbeaten 3-year-old filly Coppa, three for three and a graded stakes winner after taking Belmont’s Victory Ride Stakes (G3).

As always, the sale features a strong stallion roster, with yearlings by upper echelon sires Bernardini, City Zip, Congrats, Flatter, Ghostzapper, Kitten’s Joy, Mineshaft, More Than Ready, Scat Daddy and Uncle Mo. Proven sires Awesome Again, Broken Vow, Distorted Humor, Elusive Quality, First Dude, Into Mischief, Kantharos, Midnight Lute, Mizzen Mast, Super Saver, Tale of the Cat, Twirling Candy, Two Step Salsa and Wildcat Heir are also represented.

Always a showcase for newcomers to the stallion ranks, the 2016 August sale features the offspring of classic winning first crop sires Animal Kingdom, Orb and Oxbow, as well as Data Link, Flat Out, Fort Larned, Graydar, Justin Phillip, Liaison, Morning Line, Paynter, Point of Entry, Prospective, Rattlesnake Bridge, Shanghai Bobby, Soldat, Take Charge Indy, Treasure Beach (GB), Violence and Winslow Homer are also represented.

Classic winners Shackleford and Union Rags head the roster of the sale’s promising second crop sires along with Astrology, Biondetti, Bodemeister, Maclean’s Music, Mission Impazible, Stay Thirsty, Tapizar, The Factor and To Honor and Serve.

Pedigree Updates for the August Yearling Sale

The 2016 OBS August Yearling Sale is begins Tuesday , and although the catalog was printed in July, timely pedigree updates are just a click away via the sale’s Sortable Master Index on the OBS website at obssales.com. Up to the minute pedigree updates are also available to iPad users via the Equineline Sales Catalog iPad App. The Sortable Master Index also contains links to conformation photos of the horses in the Selected Yearling Sale.

There are 1047 yearlings cataloged for the three-day sale, which gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with 274 horses offered in the Selected session. The Sale continues with two Open sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, August 24^th and 25^th. Hip No.’s 275 – 660 will be sold Wednesday; Hip No.’s 661- 1047 sell on Thursday. Both Open sessions also start at 10:30 a.m. All three session will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF and BloodHorse websites.

Several of the horses in the sale have precocious 2-year-old siblings that have broken their maidens as well as black type updates since the catalog went to press. Here are some of the highlights of the pedigree updates through Friday, August 19^th.

Nathan’s Tizzy, by Tiz the One, broke his maiden in Special Weight company at Louisiana Downs on August 12^th. He’s a half brother to Hip No. 218, a filly by The Factor out of stakes winner Coteau Kitten, consigned by Select Sales, Agent.

Hip No. 235, consigned by Bill Murphy, Agent, is a Street Boss filly out of stakes placed Donna D, by Dixie Union. Yes Mon, her half brother by Yes It’s True, scored by 2-1/2 lengths at first asking in Special Weight company at Presque Isle Downs on June 20^th.

Callie California, a 2-year-old filly by High Cotton, romped to victory by 8-1/2 lengths in a Special Weight test at Gulfstream on July 17^th. She’s a half sister to Hip No. 340, Gracias Adios, an Adios Charlie filly consigned by Hidden Brook, Agent.

Hip No. 359, consigned by T-Square Stud LLC, Agent, is a half sister to stakes placed Dear Lilly by Poseidon’s Warrior. Her half brother by Repent, Glory Stars, scored by 6-1/4 lengths in a Maiden Special at Parx on July 24^th.

Elle Va, a 2-year-old daughter of Biondetti, won at first asking in Special Weight company at Parx on August 7^th. She’s a half sister to Hip No. 362, a With Distinction filly, a half sister to stakes placed Miss Hatter, consigned by Sharon Biamonte , Agent.

Hip No. 482, a colt by Soldat consigned by Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent), Agent, is a half brother to Evvamene, by Kantharos, a four length winner of a Gulfstream Special Weight test on July 15^th.

Hip No 490, Jalen Journey, a colt by With Distinction consigned by Kim Harrison (Top Speed Farm), Agent, is a half brother to Derek Adrian, by In Summation, a winner of all three of his starts in Puerto Rico by a combined 36 lengths.

Awesome Drama, a winner at first asking in a Presque Isle Special Weight test on July 14^th, is a full sister to Hip No. 795, a filly by Big Drama out of Awesome Thrill, by Awesome Again, consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent

Hip No. 877, Custom Infinity, a Custom for Carlos colt consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, is a full brother to Made to Fit, a Maiden Special winner at Presque Isle on August 15^th.

Hip No. 38, a colt by Congrats out of Montera, by Easy Goer, is consigned by Watershed Bloodstock LLC. A half brother to two graded stakes winners, his graded stakes placed half sister Conquest Curlgirl added a third place finish in the Mari Hulman George Stakes at Indiana Downs to her resume on July 16^th, increasing her earnings to $171,375.

Hip No. 66, consigned by Select Sales, Agent. is a Stormy Atlantic colt out of Pleasant Quality, by Elusive Quality. Noholdingback Bear, his graded stakes placed stakes winning half brother by Put It Back, was second in Woodbine’s Bold Venture Stakes (G3) on July 23^rd.

Hip No. 68, consigned by Chapel Hill Bloodstock, is a colt by Tale of Ekati out of grade one winner Poseida (CHI). Adian, his half sister by Dixieland Band, is the dam of graded stakes placed stakes winner Flora Dora, third on July 24^th in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga.

Hip No. 91, a colt by Liaison consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, added another stakes placed half sister to his pedigree when 2-year-old Easy Money, by Into Mischief, was third in the White Clay Creek Stakes at Delaware Park on August 3^rd.

Graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS April graduate You Bought Her was third in Arlington’s Chicago Handicap (G3) on June 25^th. She’s a half sister to Hip No. 128, a Wildcat Heir colt out of Striking T. by Smart Strike, consigned by Sue Vacek, Agent.

Hip No. 206, consigned by Sequel New York, Agent, is a Mission Impazible filly out of graded stakes winner Chimichurri, by Elusive Quality. Her half sister, Loving Vindication, is the dam of graded stakes placed stakes winner Solemn Tribute, by Medaglia d’Oro, who added a third place finish in Woodbine’s King Edward Stakes (G2) to his resume on July 2^nd.

Hip No. 244, consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, is a colt by Elusive Quality out of graded stakes winner Euphony, by Forest Wildcat. OBS April graduate Tequila Joe, a half brother to Euphony, was third in the American Derby (G3) at Arlington Park on July 9^th.

Hip No. 385 is a Special Rate filly out of Margarita Mistress consigned by Stoneview Farm, Agent. Her half brother, stakes winner Texas Chrome, has been busy since the catalog went to press, winning the Prelude Stakes on August 6^th at Louisiana Downs after a third in Churchill’s Matt Winn (G3) on June 18^th and a second in the Iowa Derby (G3) on July 1^st.

Stakes winner Miss Matzoball, by Smoke Glacken, is a half sister to Citizen Matzo, Hip No. 409, a Proud Citizen filly consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent. Miss Matzoball improved her record on July 31^st at Saratoga with a third place finish in the Caress Stakes.

Hip No. 412, also consigned by Summerfield, is a full brother to graded stakes winning two-time OBS graduate Mr. Jordan, out of Miss Skeedt, by Cloud Hopping. Mr. Jordan has recently been on the board in a pair of graded stakes at Monmouth, running third in the Salvator Mile (G3) on July 2^nd and the Monmouth Cup Stakes (G3) on July 31^st. He has now earned $363,095 to date.

Curragh Stables’ Harlan’s Harmony is two for two and a stakes winner despite being bumped at the start of Friday’s $100, 000 Skidmore Stakes on the turf at Saratoga. The 2-year-old colt by Spring At Last trailed in the early going but rallied down the stretch, caught front-running fellow OBS graduate Wellabled (April ’16) in the shadow of the wire, and scored by a head. Trained by John Terranova, he has earned $105,000 to date. PURSE DISTRIBUTION: 1% to all horses finishing sixth through last, then remaining balance: 62% to the winner, 20% to second, 10% to third, 5% to fourth and 3% to fifth. If less than five horses start, the purse that remains will be distributed to the winning horse.

At scratch time, the field for each race will be limited to fourteen (14) with preference given to those with the highest total earnings. Entry fee to be returned to excluded entrants. The races will be conducted according to Florida Statutes Chapter 550 as administered by the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. It is understood and agreed that the entries are accepted with the understanding that the horse so entered will only be allowed to start if in good standing at the time of the actual running of this event. Kaleem Shah’s Klimt tracked pace-setting fellow OBS graduate Big League (March ’16) in the early going of Saturday’s $200,000 Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar and then went after him on the turn. The pair raced as a team down the stretch into the final furlong before Klimt proved best, easing away in the final yards to win by 2-1/4 lengths. It’s the second win in three starts for the 2-year-old colt by Quality Road, trained by Bob Baffert, who has earned $156,960 to date. He was purchased for $435,000 by Bob Baffert on Mr. Shah’s behalf out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2016 March Sale after speeding a quarter in :20 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Great Point Stables’ Noble Beauty was awarded victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Pucker Up Stakes (G3) at Arlington Park via the disqualification of fellow OBS graduate Try Your Luck (October ’15), placed third by the stewards for interference in the stretch. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old filly by Kitten’s Joy, whose stretch charge left her a nose short of Try Your Luck at the wire. Trained by Chad Brown, the win gives her a 5-2-2-0 record and earnings of $127,350. Kagele Brothers, Inc., Ernest Marchosky, Ken Shaw and Lo Hi Stable’s Why Two picked up his second stakes victory in the $84,535 Green Flash Stakes at Del Mar, rallying to take command in the final sixteenth and easing away late to win by a length and a quarter. The 4-year-old son of Bob and John, trained by Mike Machowsky, is now 11-4-0-1 and has earned $210,665. Driver, Ywachetta and Travis’ Rivers Run Deep won Thistledown’s $75,000 Honey Jay Stakes for the third straight time on Saturday, taking command a furlong from home and drawing away to win by a length and a half. It’s the ninth stakes victory for the 5-year-old son of Ready’s Image, trained by Chris Hartman, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before he was purchased for $77,000 by Garry Simms, Agent for James Driver, out of the Rod McVey consignment at the 2013 OBS June Sale. While East Coast OBS graduates spend their summer vacations in the mountain air and cool nights at Saratoga, their California cousins are basking in the sun and enjoying the surf at Del Mar.

The big splash to date was made in the juvenile division with the victory by Ciaglia Racing LLC, Exline- Border Racing LLC & Alesia et al.’s Champagne Room in last Saturday’s $200, 000 Sorrento Stakes (G2). Breaking her maiden in the race for trainer Peter Eurton, she’s now 2-1-1-0 and has earned $132,600. They’ll be led by Rockingham Ranch’s Big League, a 3-1/4 length winner of his debut at Del Mar on July 30. Drafted, a Florida-bred son of Field Commission, broke his maiden at first asking at Keeneland in April prior to a trek to Ascot in June. Benowitz Family Trust, 3 R 3 Racing LLC, Mathilde Powell and Binith Shah’s Scattagirl picked up her third win in five starts this year on August 6^th at Del Mar for trainer Leonard Powell. The 4-year-old Scat Daddy filly won a $66,380 allowance test by a length and a quarter. Jeff Drown’s unbeaten Summer Revolution is two for two and heading for either the Travers (G1) or King’s Bishop (G1) after the 3-year-old colt by Summer Bird scored by three lengths in an $85, 000 allowance test on Saturday at Saratoga. Taking command after a half in :44 4/5, he sailed home from there, running the seven furlong distance in 1:21 flat. Trained by Rudy Rodriquez, he has earned $96,000 to date. Carl Lizza Racing Stables, LLC’s Uno Emayo took on the leaders at the top of the stretch of Monday’s $98,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes on the Saratoga turf course, battled on the outside down the stretch and stuck his nose in front at the wire to win a three-horse photo. It’s the third straight win and first stakes victory for the 3-year-old gelding by D’Funnybone, purchased for $30,000 out of the Hidden Horse Bloodstock consignment at the 2014 OBS August Yearling Sale. Also trained by Rudy Rodriguez, he’s now 14-4-1-3 and has earned $146,382.

Eric Fein, Christopher McKenna, Harris Fein, Guri Singh and Jerry Walia’s Syndergaard had an impressive career debut at Saratoga on Monday, taking the lead at the start and never looking back en route to a three length victory in a $73,000 Maiden Special Weight test. The 2-year-old colt by Majesticperfection was purchased by Eric Fein for $450,000 out of the RiceHorse Stables consignment at the 2016 OBS April Sale after working an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. Goldmart Farms and Royal Laser Racing’s Kingsport stalked the leaders in Saturday’s $126,200 Shepperton Stakes at Woodbine, came after them in the lane and was up in the final yards to win by a head. Cole’s 5-year-old Roman Officer tried stakes company for the first time since his juvenile season in the $100,000 West Virginia Legislature Chairman’s Cup Stakes at Mountaineer Park on Saturday. The son of Roman Ruler found the competition to his liking, taking the lead at the start, opening a big lead in the stretch and coasting to his first stakes victory by a length and a half. Consigned by SAB Sales (Scott A. Bergsrud), Agent, to the 2013 OBS April Sale, he breezed an eighth in :10 2/5 before he was sold for $70,000. Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Watchyourownbobber sat just off the early leader in Saturday’s $100,000 West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker’s Cup Stakes, took over after turning for home and held on gamely to win by three quarters of a length. That’s two straight stakes wins for the graded stakes placed 4-year-old colt by Hard Spun, trained by Michael Maker, now 15-6-3-2 with three stakes victories and earnings of $323,413. Keith Plaisance’s Calamity Jane scored her first stakes victory in Saturday’s $75,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff Stakes at Louisiana Downs, coming from well off the pace and closing with a rush to win by three quarters of a length. The 3-year-old Cowboy Cal filly is a three time veteran of the OBS sale ring, sold by Select Sales, Agent at the 2014 January Sale before she was resold by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, at the 2014 August Sale. She worked an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show before going through the ring at the 2015 June Sale. Now 11-4-2-3 for trainer Edward J. Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti’s Look Into My Eyes took charge of the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes at Louisiana Downs on Saturday a furlong from home and she cruised from there to a 2-1/2 length victory over fellow OBS graduate Smitty’s Cougar (March ’15). It’s the second stakes win for the 4-year-old daughter of City Zip, trained by Efren Loza, Jr., now 12-7-2-1 with $195,560 in earnings. Lady Shipman scores in Woodbine’s Royal North Stakes

Ranlo Investments LLC’s Lady Shipman went right to the front in Sunday’s $150, 000 Royal North Stakes (G3) at Woodbine and never looked back on her way to a 1-3/4 length victory, running six furlongs on the turf in 1:07.70. It’s the first graded stakes win for the 4-year-old daughter of Midshipman, consigned by Pleasant Acres Farm, Agent, to the 2014 OBS April Sale, where she turned in an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. William and Corinne Heiligbrodt’s Runway Doll was sent off as the 5-2 favorite in her debut in an $83,000 Maiden Special Weight test at Saratoga on Sunday, and she did not disappoint her backers. The 2-year-old daughter of Majestic Warrior quickly opened up a daylight lead, shrugged off a challenge on the turn then galloped away down the stretch to a 13-1/2 length victory. Trained by Steve Asmussen, she earned $49,800 for her effort.
