Johannesburg colt fastest at March Under Tack opener

Hip No. 93, a colt by Johannesburg consigned by Old South Farm, Agent, sped an eighth in :9 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the first session of the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2012 March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt is out ofQuietCity, byCarson City, and is a half brother to sakes placed Veneti.

Fourteen horses worked eighths in :10 flat. Hip No. 5 is a colt by Henny Hughes consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent; Hip No. 10 is colt by Stormy Atlantic consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent; Hip No. 20 is Scat Daddy colt consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent; Hip No. 22 is a colt by Master Command consigned by Old South Farm, Agent; Hip No. 47 is a Henny Hughes colt consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent; Hip No. 52 is colt by Tale of the Cat consigned by Bo Hunt , Agent; Hip No. 54 is a filly by Flatter consigned by Everett Livestock; Hip No. 60 is a Ready’s Image colt consigned by James Layden, Agent; Hip No. 67 is a Flashy Bull filly consigned by Scanlon Training Center, Agent; Hip No. 74 is a colt by Congaree consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent; Hip No. 91 is a colt by Ready’s Image consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent; Hip No. 104 is a filly by Medaglia d’Oro consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent; Hip No. 116 is a filly by City Zip consigned by Wavertree Stales Inc. Two youngsters shared honors for the session’s fastest quarter, stopping the timer in :20 4/5. Hip No. 44 is a colt by Bluegrass Cat consigned by Derby Dreams, Agent. The bay colt is out of Mesmerizing Lady, by Unbridled’s Song, a half sister to graded stakes winner Spring Meadow. Hip No. 58, consigned by Ocala Stud, Agent, is a dark bay or brown colt by Montbrook out of stakes placed My Golden Quest, by Coronado’s Quest.

Hip No. 141, a Sharp Humor colt consigned by W.D. North Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, worked a quarter in :21 flat. The bay colt is out of Sobhy’s Gal, by Stormy Atlantic, a full sister to stakes placed Ollie Jet.

Two horses worked quarters in :21 1/5. Hip No. 117 is a Touch Gold filly consigned by Southern Chase Farm, Inc. (Greg and Karen Dodd), Agent. The bay filly is out of Salvadoria, by Macho Uno, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Sugar Shake. Hip No. 133, consigned by Ocala Stud, is a chestnut filly by Montbrook out of stakes winner Silent Serenade, by Blare of Trumpets.  

The Under Tack Show resumes Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. with Hip No’s 181 – 362 scheduled to breeze. 

March Sale Under Tack Show starts Thursday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2012 March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training is set for Thursday and Friday, March 8th and 9th at 8:00 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-180 will breeze on Thursday and Hip No’s 181-362, will work on Friday.

The March Sale is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 13th and 14th with each session beginning at 11 a.m. The OBS Day of Champions Races will be run on Monday, March 12th with first post time at 1:00 p.m.

The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and will also be streamed live via the Blood-Horse and Daily Racing Form websites. The workouts will also be recorded and videos will be available on the website, in their entirety or by individual hip number. They will also be available for viewing in the video room adjacent to the Horsemen’s Lounge in the sale pavilion well as several kiosks in the lobby and the covered walking ring. In-room viewing is available at Holiday Inn, The Courtyard by Marriott, Homewood Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton. Under Tack Show results are posted in the OBS website. 

OBS Championship entries taken Monday

Entries for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s twenty third annual Day of Champions will be taken Monday, March 5th. The four-race card will be run on Monday, March 12th, with first post at 1:00 pm.

The four races are restricted to 3-year-olds who have gone through the ring at an OBS sale: the six furlong $50,000 OBS Sprint for fillies, the six furlong $50,000 OBS Sprint for colts and geldings, the mile and a sixteenth $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for fillies and the mile and a sixteenth $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for colts and geldings.

The races are run the day before OBS’ March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 13 – 14. The March Sale Under Tack Show is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, March 8 – 9, beginning each morning at 8 am

Both sessions of the Under Tack Show and Day of Champions will be streamed live via the OBS website.

Yara upsets Gulfstream’s Davona Dale Stakes

Peras International’s lightly raced Yara tracked 4-5 favorite Grace Hall to mid-stretch in Gulfstream’s $350, 000 Davona Dale Stakes (G2), then wore her down in the final furlong and scored her first graded stakes win by a neck. Overlooked in the Davona Dale at 64-1, the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Put It Back is a four time veteran of the OBS Sales ring, consigned by co-breeder Brambly Lane Farm to the 2009 October and 2010 January sales before selling her at the 2010 August Sale. Resold for $24,000 by Nickajack/Rey de Oros, Agent, at the 2011 April Sale, Yara now has two stakes victories, a 6-3-0-0 record and $363,920 in earnings.  under tack link

Secret Circle scores in Oaklawn’s Southwest Stakes

Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Secret Circle posted his first graded stakes win Monday, taking the second division of Oaklawn Park’s $250,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) by half a length. Sold for $165,000 by Flying Fish, Agent, at the 2011 OBS March Sale, the 3-year-old colt by Eddington is now 5-4-1-0 and has earned $518,990 to date. under tack link

Great Attack takes Tampa’s Turf Dash Stakes

Houyhnhnm Stable’s Great Attack, second in last year’s $75, 000 Turf Dash Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, returned for the 2012 renewal and rallied past the leaders in the lane to win his first stakes race by three quarters of a length over fellow OBS graduate Western Prospector (April ’08). The graded stakes placed Florida-bred son of Greatness is a three-time OBS graduate, consigned by Hidden Brook, Agent, to the 2008 January and October Sales before being sold by Eddie Woods, Agent, for $37,000 at the 2009 OBS April Sale. The win gives him a 15-5-4-2 record and earnings of $290,918. under tack link

Twelve Twenty Two takes Sunland’s El Dario Stakes

J. Kirk, Judy Robison and Solitaire Stable’S Twelve Twenty Two posted her second straight Sunland Park stakes win Saturday, taking the $50, 000 El Dario Stakes by 4-3/4 lengths, with fellow OBS graduate Oflee Wicked (March ’10) checking in third. Now 13-7-0-2 with earnings of $228,556, the 7-year-old Florida-bred mare by Kafwain was sold for $25,000 by Summerfield, Agent, at the 2005 OBS Fall Mixed Sale.

Sabrina’s Dance leads 1-2-3 OBS sweep at Gulfstream

Frank Carl Calabrese’s Sabrina’s Dance led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $60, 000 Madcap Escapade Stakes at Gulfstream on Sunday, beating Alydarla (April ’11) by a length and a quarter, with My Due Process (March ’11) another half a length back in third. It’s the first stakes score for the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Werblin, sold for $1,700 by Crowe’s Nest Farm, Inc. (Joanne Crowe), Agent, at the 2009 OBS Fall Mixed Sale. The win gives her a 5-3-1-0 record and earnings of $79,585.

Pretension, Singlet score in Saturday Stakes at Aqueduct

Kidwell’s Petite Stable’s Pretension, second to fellow OBS graduate Swag Daddy (March ’11) in December’s Damon Runyon Stakes at Aqueduct, turned the tables on Saturday and beat him by a length and a quarter in the $75, 000 Sweet Envoy Stakes. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old colt by Bluegrass Cat, now 5-2-3-0 with earnings of $86,620. He was sold for $75,000 by Sequel Bloodstock (Becky Thomas), Agent, at the 2011 OBS March Sale.

Michael Dubb, Larry N. Brafman and Daniel M. Ryan’s Singlet also scored her first stakes win on Saturday, edging fellow OBS graduate Corderosa (June ’11) by a neck in the $71,250 Dearly Precious Stakes. It’s the third straight win for the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Real Quiet, sold for $35,000 by McKathan Bros., Agent, at the 2011 OBS April Sale. She’s now 5-4-1-0 and has earned $168,144 to date. under tack link

Ultimate Eagle romps in Santa Anita’s Strub Stakes

B. J. Wright’s Ultimate Eagle showed a new dimension on Saturday, romping to a 7-1/4 length victory in the $200, 000 Strub Stakes (G2) on the dirt at Santa Anita, after winning a pair of graded stakes on grass in 2011. The 4-year-old son of Mizzen Mast, sold for $70,000 by Eisaman Equine, Agent, at the 2010 OBS April Sale, has compiled a 9-5-0-3 record and has earned $467,800 to date.
