March Sale catalog now online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s expanded 2023 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com.

A total of 830 juveniles have been cataloged for the now three-day sale, set for Monday through Wednesday, March 20th through March 22nd, with all sessions beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Hips 1 – 278 will sell on Monday, Hips 279 – 556 on Tuesday: Hips 557 – 833 on Wednesday. The Under Tack Show will span four days: Tuesday, March 14th through Friday, March 17th. Hips 1 – 208 will breeze Tuesday; Hips 209 – 416 will breeze Wednesday; Hips 417 – 624 on Thursday and Hips 625– 833 will go Friday. All four sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the TDN, DRF and Blood-Horse, and Past The Wire websites.

A perennial source of top-class racehorses, the OBS March Sale has produced a long line of stakes winners, champions and millionaires. Since the beginning of 2021 OBS March graduates have been on the board in 340 black-type races, with 90 of them graded stakes.

Gracing the 2023 March Sale catalog’s front cover is multi-millionaire Japanese racing star Café Pharoah, consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, to the 2019 March Sale, and sold for $475,000 to Narvick International, Agent, after breezing an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5. His victory last fall in the Mile Championship Nambu Hai (G1) at Morioka Racecourse was his fifth graded stakes win, among them back to back victories in the prestigious February Stakes (G1). The son of American Pharoah is his sire’s leading earner. C2 Racing Stable LLC and La Milagrosa Stable, LLC’s millionaire White Abarrio, trained by Saffie A. Joseph, Jr., won Gulfstream’s Holy Bull (G3) and Florida Derby (G1) at three and been on the board in three more graded stakes.  The son of Race Day, now 11-4-1-2, has earned $1,112,550. Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s Speed Boat Beach, part of the powerful Bob Baffert 3-year-old brigade, has won three of four starts including the $101,500 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes (G3) at Del Mar in December. It was the second stakes score for the Florida-bred colt by Bayern, bred by Richard Heysek at Caperlane Farm. He’s a two-time OBS graduate, sold by Stuart Morris, Agent, at the 2021 October Yearling Sale, and then purchased for $200,000 out of the Really and Truly Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2022 March Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :9 3/5. Rosedown Racing Stables, LLC’s Champions Dream wrapped up his juvenile campaign with a victory in Aqueduct’s Nashua Stakes (G3) in November and returned to the races with a second place finish in Tampa’s Pasco Stakes in January. Baoma Corporation’s Eda, presently training for a return to the races at Santa Anita has been idle since winning the Santa Ysabel (G3) last March in her only start last year.  At two, she was a three-time stakes winner, capping the year with a score in the Starlet Stakes (G1) at Los Alamitos. The 4-year-old daughter of Munnings, trained by Bob Baffert, returns with a 7-5-1-0 career record and $430,000 in earnings. Advanced search and filter capability has been added to allow shortlist creation. Unbeaten Red Carpet Ready romps in Gulfstream’s Forward Gal Stakes

After bobbling at the break, Ashbrook Farm and Upland Flats Racing’s unbeaten Red Carpet Ready sat just off the leaders in the early going of Saturday’s $125,000 Forward Gal Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. Taking command on the turn, she opened daylight after turning for home and cruised to a facile 2-1/4 length victory. The 3-year-old daughter of Oscar Performance, trained by Rusty Arnold, is now three for three with two stakes wins and $265,470 in earnings. Arabian Knight, Havnameltdown score graded stakes wins

Arabian Knight and Havnameltdown, two members of the Bob Baffert-trained brigade of talented 3-year-olds, posted graded stakes wins over the weekend.

Zedan Racing Stables, Inc.’s Arabian Knight is two for two and a graded stakes winner after a frontrunning 5-1/2 length victory in the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) on Saturday at Oaklawn Park. A 7-1/4 length winner of his debut in a seven furlong maiden test at Keeneland on the Breeders’ Cup undercard in November, the 3-year-old colt by Uncle Mo had no trouble with the two turn distance in the Southwest. Michael E. MyRacehorse’s Lane Way took command of Sunday’s $100,000 Clockers Corner Stakes at Santa Anita turning for home and was never threatened down the lane, reporting home a 2-1/2 length winner. Fellow OBS graduate Respect the Code (April ’21) checked in third. Hip No. 485, a yearling son of Global Campaign consigned by Fly By, went to Machmer Hall for $80,000 to top the Open Session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2023 Winter Mixed Sale. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Im a Dixie Diva, by Henny Hughes, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Mor Spirit.

  • Hip No. 547, a daughter of Girvin consigned by Get Away Farm, Agent, was sold for $61,000 to Champion Equine LLC. The bay yearling filly is out of One Hot Drama, by Big Drama, a half sister to stakes winner She’s So Beautiful.
  • Hip No. 510, a son of Army Mule consigned by 4 M Ranch, Agent, was sold for $57,000 to Star of the North, Agent for James R. Zahler. The gray or roan yearling colt is out of Lovely Illusion, by Graydar, a half sister to stakes winner Illussion Artist. walking video

  • Hip No. 646, a yearling daughter of Lookin At Lee consigned by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, went to First Finds for $42,000. The bay filly is a half sister to grade one stakes winning OBS graduate Haveyougoneaway out of One Wise Cowgirl, by Wiseman’s Ferry.
  • Hip No. 583, a yearling daughter of Global Campaign also consigned by Summerfield, was purchased for $39,000 by Valentine Jimenez. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Serious I Candy, by Candy Ride (ARG), from the family of graded stakes winner Panama Canal.
  • Hip No. 626, a son of Gift Box consigned by 4 M Ranch, Agent, went to Gift Box’s Breeder for $38,000. The dark bay or brown yearling colt is out of Union Mettle, by Dixie Union, from the family of graded stakes winner Mesabi Maiden.
  • Hip No. 611, a son of Copper Bullet consigned by Noble Oaks Farm LLC, Agent, was purchased by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC for $35,000. The bay colt is out of Sweeter Than Ever, by Exchange Rate, a daughter of stakes placed Sweet Eloise.
  • Hip No. 642, a yearling son of Global Campaign consigned by Hare Hill Farm was sold to C-G Stables for $35,000. The bay colt is out of Eclipticalspharaoh, by Eclipticalspraline, from the family of grade one stakes winner Siphonic.
  • Fast Horses went to $32,000 for Hip No. 540, a yearling daughter of Aurelius Maximus consigned by Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent), Agent. The bay filly, a half sister to stakes placed Genghis, is out of Mystic Blue, by Maimonides, a daughter of graded stakes winner Dat You Miz Blue.
  • The session’s highest priced broodmare was Hip No. 524, Pathos, in foal to OBS graduate Sharp Azteca, sold for $30,000 to MWG, LLC. Consigned by Gelfenstein Farm, the 11-year-old dark bay or brown mare is a half sister to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Faypien out of stakes winning OBS graduate Mighty Eros, by Freud.

For the Open session, 183 horses sold for a total of $2,072,200 compared with 186 horses bringing $2,075,600 in 2022. The average price was $11,323 compared with $11,159 last year, while the median price was $7,500 compared with $7,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 9.85%; it was 8.8% in 2022.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 99 horses sold for a total of $ 2,696,700, compared with 147 horses grossing $3,071,300 in 2022. The average price was $27,239 up 30.3% compared with $20,893 a year ago, while the median price was $20,000, double last year’s $10,000. The buyback percentage was 13.2%; it was 14% last year.

For the Horses of Racing Age section, 95 horses grossed $1,588,800 compared with 81 selling for a total of $1,499,700 in 2022. The average was $16,724 compared with $18,515 a year ago, while the median price was $10,000 compared to $11,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 13.6%; it was 10% in 2022.

For the entire Winter Mixed Sale, 377 horses sold for a total of $6,357,700, compared to 414 horses bringing $6,646,600 last year. The average was $16,864, up from $16,055 in 2022 while the median price was $10,000, compared with $8,500 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 11.7%; it was 11% in 2022.

Next on the OBS agenda is the expanded March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training, scheduled for March 20 – 22. The Under Tack Show is set for March 14 – 17, beginning each morning at 8:00 a.m.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 96 horses sold for a total of $2,601,700, compared with 147 horses grossing $3,071,300 in 2022. The average price was $27,101 up 29.7% compared with $20,893 a year ago, while the median price was $19,000 up from $10,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 15.8%; it was 14% last year.

Geldings by Broken Vow and Dialed In breezed three eighths in :33 1/5, posting the fastest works at the distance at the Under Tack Show for the Horses of Racing Age section of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales’ Company’s 2023 Winter Mixed Sale.

 

 

  • Hip No. 210, a 3-year-old chestnut gelding by Dialed In consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, is a half brother to graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS graduate Dubini out of stakes winner Catch My Fancy, by Yes It’s True.
  • Hip No 215, Honor You Vow, consigned by Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent) Agent, is a 3-year-old gelding by Broken Vow out of Conscription, by War Front, a daughter of graded stakes placed Much Obliged.

 

Three horses worked the distance in :33 2/5.

  • Hip No. 240, Calibrachoamatters, consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock, Agent, a 3-year-old bay colt by Calibrachoa, is a half brother to stakes winning OBS graduate Love You Baby out of Katrina’s Fury, by Include.

The Open Session, with Hip No.’s 401 – 653 cataloged, is set for Wednesday, January 26th and will also begin at 12:00 noon.

OBS will again offer Online Bidding during the Winter Mixed Sale. Winter Mixed Sale begins Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2023 Winter Mixed Sale begins Tuesday, January 24th at 12 noon.

Hip No.’s 1 – 143 are cataloged in the Consignor Preferred Session, followed immediately by 148 horses cataloged in the Racing Age section as Hip No.’s 201- 348. The Open Session, with Hip No.’s 401 – 653 cataloged, is set for Wednesday, January 25th and also starts at 12 noon. The Under Tack Show for the Racing Age section is set for Monday, January 23rd starting at 9:00 a.m.

The Sale and Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and via the Blood-Horse, Daily Racing Form, TDN and Past The Wire websites.

There are 270 yearlings cataloged by a diverse group of proven and promising sires. Roaring Forties leads OBS sweep of Gulfstream’s Sunshine Turf Stakes

Borders Racing Stable Ltd.’s Roaring Forties led from start to finish and scored by half a length to lead a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of Saturday’s $75,000 Sunshine Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Fellow OBS graduates Hot Blooded (October’19) and Me and Mr. C (March ’19) were second and third. It’s the first stakes win for the 7-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Stormy Atlantic, trained by Katerina Vassilieva, now 24-6-3-1 with earnings of $280,924. Consigned to the 2018 OBS Spring Sale by his breeder Stroud’s Lane Farm, LLC, he went through the ring after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. watch his under tack video 

Winter Mixed Sale’s Under Tack Show starts Monday at 9:00 A.M

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Winter Mixed Sale’s Horses of Racing Age Section is set for Monday, January 23rd at 9:00 a.m.

There are 148 horses cataloged in the Racing Age section, with Hip No.’s 201- 305 in the original printed Winter Mixed Sale catalog. A printed supplemental catalog, including Racing Age supplements Hip No’s 306 – 334, is now available at the sales grounds. Printed catalog pages for additional Racing Age supplements 335-348 are available at the sales office.

The Under Tack Show will showcase newly turned 3-year-olds by a strong roster of proven and up and coming sires.  Bolt d’Oro, Into Mischief, Justify and Ghostzapper are represented, as are Cloud Computing, Collected, Munnings, Quality Road and Not This Time.  Army Mule, City of Light, Connect and Girvin are also represented, as are Good Magic, Hard Spun, Kantharos, Mendelssohn, Mo Town, Nyquist and Sharp Azteca.
