Merit Man scores in Gulfstream’s Spectacular Bid Stakes

Bruce Chandler, Robert H. McKee and James Glavin’s Merit Man is a nose from an unbeaten four for four record after leading all way and taking Gulfstream Park’s $100, 000 Spectacular Bid Stakes by three quarters of a length on New Year’s Day. The newly turned 3-year-old colt by With Distinction is a two-time OBS graduate, consigned to the 2010 Fall Mixed Sale by Hartley DeRenzo Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent before they sold him for $75,000 at the 2012 April Sale. The only blemish on his 4-3-1-0 record is a nose decision to fellow OBS graduate Hightail (March ’12) in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint in November. Comma to the Top a millionaire after scoring in Santa Anita’s Daytona Stakes

Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum & Kevin Tsujihara’s Comma to the Top became the newest OBS millionaire on Saturday, leading all the way en route to a 1-3/4 length victory in Santa Anita’s $100,000 Daytona Stakes (G3). It’s the fourth win in eight starts this year for the 4-year-old Florida-bred graded stakes winning gelding by Bwana Charlie, a two time OBS graduate. He was sold first by Beth Bayer, Agent, as a weanling at the 2010 OBS Fall Mixed Sale before bringing $22,000 when purchased out of the Indian Prairie Ranch consignment at the 2010 April Sale. His sixth stakes win leaves him with a 25-11-2-1 career record and earnings of $1,027,696.  watch his under tack video

Majestic Racing Stable, LLC and RAP Racing’s Avare led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of Saturday’s $77,500 Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita, leading all the way and scoring by 4-1/4 lengths over Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview Stakes winner Gabriel Charles (April ’12), with Will True Up (March ’12) checking in third. It’s the first stakes win for the 2-year-old son of Johannesburg, sold for $130,000 by McKathan Bros., Agent, at the 2012 OBS June Sale. Now 4-2-0-0, Avare has earned $78,900 to date. watch his under tack video

Klaravich Stables Inc. & William H. Lawrence’s Populist Politics racked up his fourth stakes win, closing strongly for a 2-1/2 length victory in $70,000 B-Connected Stakes on Saturday at Delta Downs. The 4-year-old graded stakes placed colt by Don’t Get Mad was sold for $70,000 by M & H Training and Sales, Agent, at the 2010 OBS April Sale. He’s now 21-6-5-4 and has earned $432,416 to date. watch his under tack video

Cindy Nassal’s Appealing Stella tried stakes company for the first time in Tampa’s $50,000 Minaret Stakes on Saturday and got up in the final furlong for a 1-1/4 length victory. The 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by Closing Argument, now 12-4-4-0 with earnings of $135,205, was consigned by Summerfield, Agent, to the 2009 OBS August Sale.

April graduate Gamdonguibada makes history in Korea

OBS April graduate Gamdonguibada made history on Sunday, December 9th with a victory in the Grand Prix Stakes at Seoul Race Park. The 3-year-old daughter of Werblin, sold for $31, 000 to KOID Co. Ltd for Park, Kwang-Soon, by The Team, Agent at the 2011 OBS April Sale, had already been acclaimed Korea’s best filly & mare of 2012 after her win in the Gyeongnam Governor’s Cup. The victory in the Grand Prix, Korea’s most prestigious race, should earn her the title of Korea’s overall champion racehorse of the year. A winner in six of her ten career starts, three in stakes company, she’s earned the equivalent of just under $1-million in prize money. Gamdonguibada is only the fourth filly, and the first in twelve years, to win the Grand Prix Stakes.

Gamdonguibada is the fourth OBS graduate in the past five years to score a Grand Prix victory. OBS June graduate Tough Win, with 18 wins form 25 starts, took the 2011 renewal and OBS April graduate Dongbanui Gangja ( 35-20-7-2) won back to back in 2008 and 2009. Tough Win, a colt by Yonaguska, was sold for $12,000 to S.R.O.A. by Jimmy Miranda, Agent, at the 2009 June Sale, while Dongbanui Gangja, a colt by BrokenVow, was sold to Triple Crown Racing for $20,000 by Nick de Meric, Agent, at the 2007 April Sale.

Hurricane Ike takes Fair Grounds’ Tenacious Handicap

Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Hurricane Ike went to the lead and stayed there all the way in the $75, 000 Tenacious Handicap at the Fair Grounds, winning by a neck. It’s the second stakes win of the year for the 5-year-old Florida-bred son of Graeme Hall, now 27-6-6-4 with earnings of $568,070. He was sold for $115,000 by Southern Breeze Ranch, Agent, at the 2008 OBS August Sale.

2013 Winter Mixed Sale Catalog

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2013 Winter Mixed Sale is now available on the OBS website at obssales.com. The sortable master index provides access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog went to the printer.

A total of 636 horses have been cataloged to date for the two-day sale, scheduled to begin Tuesday, January 15th with hip numbers 1-162 selling in the Consignor Preferred session. The 181 horses (hip numbers 163 – 343) cataloged in the Horses of Racing Age section will sell immediately after the Preferred session. OBS is accepting supplemental nominations for the Horses of Racing Age section through Friday, December 21st .Supplements to the Racing Age section will begin with hip number 344. Past performances are currently available online.

Hip numbers 401 – 693 sell on Wednesday, January 16th in the Open Session. The sale begins each day at 10:30 a.m.

The Racing Age Section includes 26 newly turned two year olds and 155 older horses. The optional Under Tack Show, set for Monday, January 14th at 10:00 a.m., will be streamed live via the OBS website and videos will be posted online as well as viewable at the sales grounds.

The 258 newly turned yearlings in the sale are highlighted by the progeny of a strong roster of proven sires including Flower Alley, Hard Spun, Harlan’s Holiday, Kittens’ Joy, Mineshaft and Tale of the Cat. Florida-based stallions represented by yearlings in the sale include Wildcat Heir, Montbrook, Leroidesanimaux (BRZ), Circular Quay, High Cotton and Put It Back.

Promising stallions with yearlings in the sale include Colonel John, Desert Party, Majestic Warrior, Munnings, Quality Road, Street Boss, Super Saver and Zensational as well as Florida-based Cool Coal Man and Kantharos.

Broodmare buyers will find mares in foal to a good group of proven stallions including Big Brown, Elusive Quality, Proud Citizen, Scat Daddy, Spring At Last and Tiz Wonderful as well as up and comers Archarcharch, Big Drama, First Dude and Pioneerof the Nile.

Stakes winner Bingo, a 4-year-old daughter of Bernstein with earnings over $200,000 is sure to attract attention in the Horses of Racing Age category as well as the 2-year-old colt Falling Sky, by Lion Heart, a winner at first asking and a good fourth in the Inaugural Stakes on opening day at Tampa Bay Downs. Falling Sky returned to the races on Saturday, December 15th and won an allowance race at Gulfstream. Lavalette Gold, a 2-year-old daughter of Circular Quay, second in the Joe O’Farrell Stakes at Calder, scored in a Gulfstream Park allowance on Sunday, January 16th. Channel of Gold, a 2-year-old daughter of Bernardini, showed promise finishing 3rd at Calder in only her second start.

Ladystarturengine chosen champion Indiana-bred juvenile filly

G. Ray Trisler’s OBS April Sale graduate Ladystarturengine has been chosen as 2012’s champion Indiana-bred juvenile filly. Never off the board in six starts with earnings of $99, 793, the daughter of Jump Start’s 2-year-old campaign was highlighted by a 1-3/4 length victory in the $88,850 City of Anderson Stakes at Hoosier Park on October 6. She was consigned by Eversole Thoroughbreds, Agent to the 2012 April Sale.  

Brigand scores in City of Laurel Stakes

Kaleem Shah’s Brigand posted his first stakes win on December 8 at Laurel, leading all the way en route to a one length victory in the $104, 000 City of Laurel Stakes. It’s the third win in nine starts this year for the 3-year-old colt by Flatter, now 12-4-5-0 with $288, 820 in earnings. Robbie Norman’s Hero Force tried stakes company for the first time in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes at the Fair Grounds, battled for the early lead, took command leaving the eighth pole then held off the late charge of fellow OBS graduate Lattin Devil (March ’12) and scored by half a length. The 2-year-old colt by Political Force, sold first by Summerfield, Agent at the 2011 OBS Winter Mixed Sale, was sold for $60,000 by Halcyon Hammock, Agent at the 2012 OBS April Sale. The win leaves him 4-2-1-1 with earnings of $93,710. watch his under tack video

Frank Calabrese’s Romacaca racked up her tenth stakes victory in Gulfstream’s $100,000 South Beach Stakes, getting up in the final yards and winning by a neck. It’s the fourth win in eight starts this year for the 6-year-old Florida-bred mare by Running Stag, a two-time OBS graduate, consigned by breeder Cashel Stud to the 2007 August Sale and 2008 April Sale. Closing in on a million, she’s now 32-16-5-3 with earnings of $926,992. watch her under tack video

Bona Venture Stables’ Smooth Bert battled fellow OBS graduate Notacatbutallama (April ’12) in the stretch of the $80,000 Damon Runyon Stakes and prevailed by three quarters of a length. It’s the first stakes score for the 2-year-old son of Smooth Jazz, sold for $60,000 by SGV Thoroughbreds (Steven Venosa), Agent, at the 2012 OBS April Sale. Live Racing at OBS on Tuesday, December 11

The fields are set for two live races to be run at OBS on Tuesday, December 11th.  Entries were drawn last Tuesday for the races. Race one is a $20, 000 allowance for thoroughbreds three-year-olds and up at six furlongs. Race two is a $7, 500 allowance for quarter horses three-year-olds and up at 220 yards. 

Win, place, show, exacta and daily double wagering will be offered. Post time for the first race is 1:30 p.m.

Singlet scores in Aqueduct’s Garland of Roses

Michael Dubb, Larry N. Brafman and Daniel M. Ryan’s Singlet took charge of Saturday’s $75, 000 Garland of Roses Stakes at Aqueduct on the turn and rolled from there to a 1-1/4 length victory. It’s the third win in seven starts this year for the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Real Quiet, sold for $35,000 by McKathan Bros., Agent, at the 2011 OBS April Sale. Scott Speith’s Cor Cor is two for two and a stakes winner after her wire to wire half-length win in Tampa’s $75, 000 Sandpiper Stakes on Saturday. The 2-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Smoke Glacken was consigned and bought back by Southern Chase Farm (Greg & Karen Dodd), Agent, at the 2012 OBS March Sale before they sold her for $40,000 at the OBS June Sale. Lanni Family Trust’s Reneesgotzip posted her third stakes win of the year on Saturday, getting up in the final strides to win the $70,440 Skillful Joy Stakes at Hollywood Park by a neck. Four for eight this year, the 3-year-old filly by City Zip is now 9-5-2-1 and has earned $454,460. She was sold by Ricky Leppala, Agent, for $45,000 at the 2011 OBS April Sale. watch her under tack video

OBS graduates scored in three Claiming Crown Stakes on Saturday as Gulfstream Park opened its 2012-13 meeting. Ken & Sarah Ramsey’s Bernie the Maestro won the $97,000 Rapid Transit Stakes by 2-3/4 lengths with the Ramsey’s fellow OBS graduate Won Fast Bullet (August ’08) checking in third. Sold by Sabine Stable for $25,000 at the 2009 April Sale, Bernie the Maestro, by Bernstein, is 47-12-7-7 with earnings of $423,254. watch his under tack video

The Ramsey’s $100,000 2009 OBS March graduate Brother Bird was a three quarter length winner of the $98,000 Iron Horse Stakes, improving to 25-9-5-3 with $234,175 in earnings. The half brother to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird was sold by Cary Frommer, Agent. watch his under tack video

Chasing Tails Stables’ two-time OBS graduate Starship Truffles took the $96,000 Glass Slipper Stakes by four lengths. The 3-year-old Ghostzapper filly was bought back by Nickajack/Rey de Oros, Agent, at the 2011 OBS April Stakes before selling her for $22,000 at OBS June. OBS Race Conditions Set

Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company has released the conditions for the races to be run on December 11th and they are available at the OBS offices and on the website at www.obssales.com. Entries will be taken on December 4th. 

One Thoroughbred and one Quarter Horse race is scheduled. The Thoroughbred race is a $20, 000 allowance that will be run at six furlongs for three year olds and upward which have never won a race other than maiden, claiming or starter or which have never won two races or which have not won a race in 2012. The Quarter Horse race is a $7, 500 allowance to be run at 220 yards for three year olds and upward which have never won two races or which have not won a race in 2012. In the event a race does not fill, a substitute race is listed for each breed with starter allowance conditions.

Unbridled Command captures Hollywood Derby

Lakland Farm’s Unbridled Command made a big run from well back around the second turn of Sunday’s $250, 000 Hollywood Derby (G1), opened daylight in the stretch and cruised to a 1-1/2 length victory. It’s the fifth straight win and second graded stakes score for the 3-year-old colt by Master Command, sold for $28,000 by Sequel Bloodstock (Becky Thomas), Agent, at the 2011 OBS April Sale. Bear Stables, Ltd.’s Bear Tough Tiger picked up the first stakes win of his career in Sunday’s $158,162 Kennedy Road Stakes (G3) at Woodbine, getting up in the final yards to win by a neck. It was the fourth win in eight starts this year for the 4-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Roar of the Tiger, sold first by Beth Bayer, Agent, at the 2009 OBS August Yearling Sale before bringing $70,000 when purchased out of the Harris Training Center consignment at the 2010 OBS April Sale.
