It’s the first stakes win for the 6-year-old gelding by Alphabet Soup, sold for $45,000 at the 2009 Adena Springs Sale. Farnsworth Stables LLC’s Golden Mystery sat close to the pace in Gulfstream’s $150, 000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3), took charge turning for home and then drew away to a 3-1/2 length victory. It’s the first graded stakes win for the 7-year-old daughter of Awesome Again, now 38-9-9-4 with earnings of $540,223. Joey Keith Davis’ Red Lead won Sunland Park’s $50,000 Curribot Stakes for the second time on Sunday, taking the lead on the turn and easing away to a 1-1/4 length victory. The 7-year-old graded stakes placed gelding by Red Bullet won the Curribot in 2010 and was second in the 2011 renewal. His fourth stakes win leaves him with a 42-11-13-4 record, and he’s piled up $725,296 in earnings after being sold for $10,000 by Beth Bayer, Agent, at the 2007 OBS January Sale.

A total of 345 juveniles have been cataloged for the two-day OBS sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12th and 13th, with both sessions beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show is set for 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 7th (Hips 1-172), and Friday, March 8th (Hips 173-345). The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF and Bloodhorse websites. The 24th annual OBS Championship Stakes races will be run on Monday, March 11th, with first post time at 1:00 p.m.
The March Sale has long been a source of top class racehorses, as OBS Selected Two-Year-Old Sales have produced the winners of 17 Eclipse Awards, 12 Breeders’ Cup races and 36 millionaire graduates.
Since the beginning of 2012, OBS March graduates have accounted for 50 stakes wins, including thirteen graded stakes. The latest is WinStar Farm LLC’s Revolutionary, who overcame a nightmare trip to win last Saturday’s Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. The 3-year-old son of War Pass was sold for $235,000 at the 2012 OBS March Sale by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent. He’s now 5-2-1-2 and has earned $188,500.
Also on the Derby Trail is Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa’s Itsmyluckyday, who handed 2012’s juvenile champion Shanghai Bobby his first defeat in the recent Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream. The 3-year-old colt by Lawyer Ron, sold by Eisaman Equine, Agent, for $110,000 at the 2012 OBS March Sale, has earned $425,600 to date.
John Oxley’s Spring in the Air also came out of last year’s March Sale and captured the prestigious Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keenleand, ending her two-year-old season with earnings of $431,519. The filly by Spring at Last was sold for $130,000 by Eddie Woods, Agent.
The 2012 March Sale also produced Repole Stables’ unbeaten graded winner Unlimited Budget, who captured Aqueduct’s $250,000 Demoiselle Stakes (G3) in her second start. The daughter of Street Sense was sold for $475,000 by Ocala Stud.
Bluegrass Hall LLC’s 2012 March graduate Hightail won the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint in a stretch duel over OBS April graduate Merit Man. The son of Mineshaft was purchased by trainer D. Wayne Lukas on behalf Brad Kelley’s Bluegrass Hall for $345,000 from Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent.
Previous March Sale graduates scoring grade one wins in 2012 included Peachtree Stable’s 2011 Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Plum Pretty, who added Oaklawn’s Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) to her resume in 2012. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, sold for $130,000 by Kirkwood Stables, Agent, at the 2010 OBS March Sale, retired with earnings of $1,656,700 and was sold as a broodmare prospect for $4,200,000 this past November.
Featherston, Jacobsen & Miller’s Camp Victory won the $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap (G1) at Betfair Hollywood Park and ended 2012 with earnings of $547,986. The multiple graded stakes winner by Forest Camp was sold for $90,000 by M & H Training and Sales, Agent, at the 2009 OBS March Sale.
This year’s OBS March Sale features juveniles sired by the 2012 General Sire List’s top five: Giant’s Causeway, Empire Maker, Speightstown, Tapit, and Smart Strike. Other prominent sires represented in the sale are Arch, Candy Ride, Dixie Union, Ghostzapper, Harlan’s Holiday, Indian Charlie, Kitten’s Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, More Than Ready, Pulpit, Street Cry, Tiznow, and Unbridled’s Song. Top young sires are well represented by Bernardini, Flower Alley, Hard Spun, Henny Hughes, Scat Daddy, Street Sense, and War Front. Last year’s talented freshman sires with offspring in the sale are Big Brown, Curlin, Into Mischief, Majestic Warrior, and Spring At Last. Exciting newcomers with first foals racing in 2013 include top class racehorses Colonel John, Pioneerof the Nile and Zensational.

WinStar Farm LLC’s Revolutionary overcame a horrendous trip to win Saturday’s Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. The 3-year-old colt by War Pass was trapped inside most of the way, but found a seam under Javier Castellano and charged between horses in the final yards and scored his first stakes win by a neck. Newtown Anner Stud, James Covello and Joseph Bulger’s Falling Sky, who topped last month’s Horses of Racing Age section of the OBS Winter Mixed Sale, produced a quick return on investment, taking the lead at the start of the $202,500 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs then holding off the late charge of favored Dynamic Sky to win his first stakes race by a neck. Robbie Norman’s Hero Force picked up his second stakes victory at Delta Downs on Saturday night, taking charge in the final furlong and winning the $125,000 La. Bred Premier Night Prince Stakes by three quarters of a length. The 3-year-old colt by Political Force was sold by Summerfield, Agent at the 2011 OBS Winter Mixed Sale before being resold for $60,000 by Halcyon Hammock, Agent at the 2012 OBS April Sale. Steve Ballou and Harriet Waldron’s Cor Cor shipped to the Fair Grounds from her Tampa Bay Downs home for Saturday’s $75,000 Battle of New Orleans Stakes, and the 3-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Smoke Glacken went right to the front and never looked back en route to a 4-1/4 length victory. It’s her second stakes win and leaves her with a 4-3-1-0 record and earnings of $135,800. 2012 Grade One Winners From OBS Two-Year-Old Sales
J. Paul Reddam’s I’ll Have Another earned his Eclipse Award on the strength of victories in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1). He’s the third OBS two-year-old graduate voted champion 3-year-old male, joining Skip Away and Silver Charm. Undefeated in 2012 with four graded stakes wins, the son of Flower Alley was sold for $35, 000 by Eisaman Equine, Agent, on behalf of Victor Davila at the 2011 OBS April Sale. Retired on the morning of the Belmont Stakes, he ended his racing career with earnings of $2,693,600 and is now standing at stud in Japan at Big Red Farm. Sherry Parbhoo’s Trinniberg is the fourth OBS juvenile graduate to win the Eclipse Award as champion sprinter, joining Cherokee Run, Lost in the Fog and Midnight Lute. Brown, Jr., Alan Klein, Alan and Phillip Lebherz’s Distinctiv Passion set rapid fractions on the lead in Monday’s $75, 460 San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita before cruising to his first stakes victory by a length and a half. That’s three straight wins for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by With Distinction, sold first by Kaizen Sales, Agent for Plumley Farms at the 2011 OBS January Sale before bringing $65,000 when purchased out of the Kim Harrison consignment at the 2011 OBS August Sale. He’s now 5-3-0-1 and has earned $120,600.

Lawrence’s Clawback jumped from a December maiden win into the $73,500 Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct on Monday and the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Put It Back ran off to a five length victory. A two time OBS graduate, he was sold first by TdM Sales (Tristan and Valery de Meric), Agent at the 2011 January Sale before being sold for $70,000 by Blas Perez, Agent for Blue Top Holdings Stable at the 2012 April Sale.
