Hip No. 449, a son of Frosted consigned by Longoria Training & Sales, Agent, went to Donato Lanni, Agent, for $900,000 to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2023 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, whose eighth in :9 3/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Tuesday’s Under Tack session, is out of Handwoven, by Indian Charlie, a half sister to graded stakes placed Flatter Than Me.

  • Hip No. 510, a son of Justify consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, was sold to Mick Wallace, Agent for Gandharvi Stable, for $750,000. The bay colt, who sped an eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is out of Iadorakid, by Lemon Drop Kid, a half sister to champion El Tormenta.

  • C R K Stable, LLC went to $400,000 for Hip No. 417, a daughter of Into Mischief consigned by Hidden Brook, Agent for Bonne Chance Farm LLC. The bay filly, who worked an eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is out of Goiaba, by Speightstown, a full sister to grade one stakes winner Mozu Superflare.

For the day, 180 horses brought a total of $23,468,000 compared with 191 selling for a total of $26,114,500 at last year’s second session. The average price was $130,378 compared to $136,725 in 2022 while the median price was $65,000 compared with $75,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 20.7%; it was 12.8% last year.

The 2023 OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is set for Tuesday through Friday, April 25th – 28th with all four sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Spring Sale’s Under Tack Show begins Sunday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2023 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Sunday, April 16th, and continues through Saturday, April 22nd. All seven sessions begin at 8:00 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-175 will breeze on Sunday. Hip No.’s 176-350 go to the track Monday; Hip No’s 351-525 breeze Tuesday; Hip No’s 526-700 work Wednesday, Hip No.’s 701-875 breeze Thursday, Hip No’s 876-1050 work on Friday and Hip No’s 1051-1222 will go to the track Saturday.

The Sale is set for Tuesday, April 25th through Friday, April 28th with each session beginning at 10:30 a.m. Hip No’s 1-306 go on the block Tuesday, Hip No’s 307-612 will be offered Wednesday, Hip No.’s 613-918 sell Thursday and Hip No’s. 919-1222 will sell on Friday.

The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and on YouTube and the TDN, DRF, Blood-Horse and Past The Wire websites. The workouts will be recorded and can be viewed on the website, in their entirety or by individual hip number. They will also be available in the Video Room as well as several kiosks in the breezeway and covered walking ring. Long a source of top-class racehorses, the OBS Spring Sale has grown in stature to become the world’s preeminent juvenile auction. Through the years the sale has produced a sizable roster of champions, millionaires and Breeders’ Cup winners, horses competing and succeeding at the sport’s highest levels.

Last year’s sale upholds that legacy. To date, 2022 OBS Spring graduates, on the board in 40 graded stakes, have posted 16 graded stakes victories.

Mo Strike got the ball rolling with a victory in Saratoga’s Sanford Stakes (G3). Havnameltdown took the Best Pal (G3), Bob Hope (G3), San Vicente (G2) and was second in the recent Saudi Derby (G3). And Tell Me Nolies has won the Del Mar Debutante (G1), Santa Anita’s Chandelier Stakes (G2) and finished second in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2).  Packs a Wahlop took two graded stakes, scoring in Del Mar’s Juvenile Turf Stakes (G3) and Santa Anita’s Zuma Beach (G3). At Woodbine, Renegade Rebel won the Mazarine Stakes (G3), the talented Arabian Knight scored in Oaklawn’s Southwest Stakes (G3) and Red Carpet Lady took Gulfstream’s Forward Gal (G3).

Three OBS Spring grads are on the TDN’s list of top ten Kentucky Oaks (G1) candidates, with Affirmative Lady, winner of the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) and Gazelle Stakes (G3) winner Promiseher America joining And Tell Me Nolies.

Finally, Practical Move is at or near the top of everyone’s Kentucky Derby (G1) list after winning three straight graded stakes: the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), San Felipe Stakes (G2) and the Santa Anita Derby (G1).

For the session, 150 horses sold for a total of $23,945,000.  The average price was $159,633, the median $80,000 and the buyback percentage was 19.4%. There was no corresponding session in 2022.

For the entire sale, 460 horses grossed $71,110,500 in three sessions compared with 374 bringing $49,371,633 in two sessions in 2022. The average price was $154,588 compared with $132,008 last year and the median price was $75,000, unchanged from 2022. The buyback percentage was 21.4%; it was 12.2% in 2022.

Next on the OBS schedule is the Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training, set for Tuesday, April 25th through Friday, April 28th. All sessions begin at 10:30 a.m.

The Under Tack Show begins Sunday, April 16th and continues through Saturday. April 22nd with all sessions starting at 8:00 a.m.

The bay colt, whose Under Tack eighth in :9 3/5 on Thursday was the sale’s co-fastest at the distance, is out of Hoppa, by Uncle Mo, from the family of graded stakes winner Wandering Star.

The price equaled the previous March record, set in 2019 for Chestertown, a stakes winning son of Tapit.

March Sale begins Monday

The 2023 OBS March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training begins Monday March 20th. There are 833 juveniles cataloged for the three-day sale, continuing through Wednesday, March 22nd, with all sessions starting at 11:00 a.m. Hips 1 – 278 will sell Monday; Hips 279 – 556 on Tuesday and Hips 557 – 833 on Wednesday.

There are 164 stallions with offspring in the sale, headed by OBS March graduate and leading sire Into Mischief,  represented by 12 youngsters, The roster also includes the rest of North America’s 2022 Top Ten leaders: Curlin, Gun Runner, Uncle Mo, Tapit, Munnings, Not This Time, Speightstown, Quality Road and Constitution.

The stallion roster also includes the top ten Freshman Sires of 2022: Bolt d’Oro, Good Magic, Army Mule, Justify, Girvin, OBS April and August grad Sharp Azteca, Mendelssohn, Mo Town, Oscar Performance and City of Light.

It also includes 2023’s promising first crop Two Year Old sires: Omaha Beach, Audible, champion OBS April graduate Mitole, Vino Rosso, Catalina Cruiser, Catholic Boy, Maximus Mischief, Flameaway, Preservationist and OBS August graduate World of Trouble.

The Under Tack Show continues Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. with Hip No.’s 417 – 624 scheduled to breeze, streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com, and also via the Blood-Horse, DRF, TDN and Past The Wire websites.

Under Tack results and videos are posted on the OBS website at obssales.com and can be viewed on kiosks in the breezeway and in the Video Room adjacent to the Horsemen’s Lounge. In-room viewing is available at The Courtyard by Marriott, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton.

Current information about OBS sales, consignors and graduates is now also available via social media sites Facebook and Twitter. A link on the homepage directs users to either site.

Sales results will be available on the OBS website, updated hourly during each session of the Spring Sale. In addition, the latest news regarding OBS graduates, sales schedules, nominations, credit requests, travel information and other news relevant to OBS consignors and customers is also available.
