Irap captures Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes

Reddam Racing LLC’s Irap found a good place to break his maiden on Saturday at Keeneland, taking the lead after turning for home in the $1, 000,000 Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and hanging on gamely in the stretch for a three quarter length victory. Although the 3-year-old colt by Tiznow had been second in the Cash Call Futurity (G1) and Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3), he was ignored at odds of 31-1and became the fifth OBS graduate to take the Keeneland fixture. Skip Away (1996) was the first, followed by Peace Rules (2003), Dance With Fate (2014) and Carpe Diem (2015). Consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent, to the 2016 OBS March Sale, Irap turned in an Under Tack eighth in:10 1/5 before he was purchased by Dennis O’Neill for $300,000. Golden Eagle Farm’s Hillhouse High tracked the leader in Santa Anita’s $200,690 Royal Heroine Stakes (G2) into the lane, took over in the stretch and scored by half a length. It’s the first stakes victory for the 6-year-old daughter of Exchange Rate, trained by Richard Baltas, now 23-4-6-6 with earnings of $441,113 to date. Celestine a millionaire after taking Gulfstream’s Honey Fox

Moyglare Stud Farm, Ltd.’s Celestine became the newest OBS millionaire with a victory in the $300, 000 Honey Fox Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, setting the pace from the start and cruising home first by a length and a quarter. It’s the third graded stakes win for the 5-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy, now in the care of trainer Christophe Clement, leaving her now 16-8-2-2 with $1,069,655 in earnings. Purchased by her current connections for $2,550,000 last November, she was consigned at two by Gayle Woods on behalf of James Bryan’s Phaedrus Flights to the 2014 OBS June Sale, where she breezed three eighths in :32 2/5 at the Under Tack Show, the sale’s fastest work at the distance. watch her under tack video

April grad Fast and Accurate takes Turfway’s Spiral Stakes

Hansen’s Fast and Accurate sat just off the pace in the early going of Saturday’s $500, 000 Spiral Stakes (G3) at Turfway Park, took the lead at the top of the stretch and held on gamely to win by three quarters of a length. Fellow OBS graduate Convict Pike (April ’16) settled for third. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Hansen, trained by Mike Maker, now 6-3-1-0 with $340,362 in earnings. Mind Your Biscuits romps in Dubai Golden Shaheen

J Stables, Head of Plains Partners LLC, Summer, Summers, Kisber and Summers’ Mind Your Biscuits had a lot of work to do turning for home in the $2-million Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) at Meydan Race Course, but he swept by the field on the outside under Joel Rosario, took the lead in the final furlong and rolled to a four length victory. It was the first win for trainer Chad Summers and the second grade one victory for the 4-year-old colt by Posse, now 15-5-6-2 and the latest OBS millionaire with earnings over $2-million. It’s the sixth victory in the Golden Shaheen (G1) by an OBS graduate, and the first by an April graduate. March Sale graduate Caller One took back to back renewals in 2001 and 2002 followed by February Sale graduate Saratoga County in 2005. In 2009 it was Big City Man, who went through the ring in August and January, and in 2015 it was two time Breeders’ Cup winner Secret Circle, a March Sale graduate.

Mind Your Biscuits favored in Dubai Golden Shaheen

J Stables, Head of Plains Partners LLC, Summer, Summers, Kisber and Summers’ Mind Your Biscuits, the 5/2 favorite in the $2-million Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1), heads a five horse contingent of OBS graduates participating in Saturday’s Dubai World Cup card at Meydan Race Course. Breaking from post 14, he comes into the race off a sharp second in the Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3) after earning his grade one stripes with a half length victory over Sharp Azteca in Santa Anita’s Malibu Stakes (G1) in December. It was the second graded stakes victory for the now 4-year-old colt by Posse, winner of Saratoga’s Amsterdam Stakes (G2) in July. Trained by Chad Summers, he’s now 14-4-6-2 and has earned $815,166 to date. A five time graded stakes winner, the 7-year-old Florida-bred son of Wildcat Heir is now 27-8-5-6 with $1,138,732 in earnings. Altamira Racing Stable and David A. Bernsen’s St. Joe Bay, who has drawn post 11 in the Golden Shaheen, comes into the race off has second straight stakes win, a 2-1/4 victory in the Palos Verdes Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. It was the third straight win for the 5-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Saint Anddan, trained by Peter Miller, now 21-5-5-3 with $377,175 in earnings. A two time OBS graduate, he was consigned by Bobby Jones Equine LLC, Agent to the 2013 Winter Mixed Sale and then purchased for $60,000 out of the Bobby Dodd consignment at the 2014 June Sale after an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. watch his under tack video

The Golden Shaheen (G1) has been captured five times by OBS alumni. March Sale graduate Caller One took back to back renewals in 2001 and 2002 followed by February Sale graduate Saratoga County in 2005. In 2009 it was Big City Man, who went through the ring in August and January, and in 2015 it was two time Breeders’ Cup winner Secret Circle, a March Sale graduate.

Gelfenstein Farm’s Sharp Azteca is the 9/5 favorite in the first race on the World Cup card, the $1-million Godolphin Mile (G2). Al Shaqab Racing, WinStar Farm LLC and China Horse Club’s Master Plan comes into the $2-million UAE Derby (G2) off his 2-1/2 length victory in the OBS Championship Stakes in January. Trained by Todd Pletcher, he’ll break from post two in a field 16 under John Velazquez, who was aboard in Ocala. The 3-year-old colt by Twirling Candy was purchased by his owners for $850,000 out of the Eisaman Equine consignment at the 2016 March Sale after working an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Unbeaten Malagacy takes Oaklawn’s Rebel Stakes

Sumaya U.S. Stable’s Malagacy is three for three and a graded stakes winner after taking charge of Saturday’s $900, 000 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park in the stretch and drawing away late to win by two lengths. Fellow OBS graduate Untrapped (March ’16) rallied to finish third. It was the stakes debut for the 3-year-old colt by Shackleford, trained by Todd Pletcher, who shipped in for the Rebel after winning his first two starts at Gulfstream by a combined 22 lengths. Veb Racing Stable Corp.’s Distinta circled horses on the turn to reach contention in the $200,000 Inside Information Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream, then wore down the leaders on the outside down the stretch and was up late to win by half a length. Cheyenne Stables LLC’s Clothes Fall Off successfully defended her title in Aqueduct’s $125,000 Correction Stakes on Saturday, relaxing off the pace in the early going before circling horses, running past the leaders a sixteenth from home and drawing off to win by 4-1/4 lengths. It’s the second stakes win for the 5-year-old graded stakes placed filly by Daaher, consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC to the 2014 OBS March Sale and sold to Cheyenne Stables for $150,000 after an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. Lady Sheila Stable’s Matt King Coal is two for two this year after taking the lead at the start of Saturday’s $75,000 Harrison E. Johnson Memorial Stakes at Laurel, surrendering it briefly to fellow OBS graduate Afleet Willy (June ’15) in mid-stretch then coming again to beat him by a head on the wire. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Cool Coal Man, a two time OBS graduate. A total of 1,208 juveniles have been cataloged for the four-day sale, set for Tuesday through Friday, April 25^th – 28^th with all sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. Hips 1-302 will sell on Tuesday, Hips 303-604 on Wednesday, Hips 605-906 will be offered Thursday and Hips 907-1208 on Friday

The Under Tack Show will span six days, beginning Monday, April 17^th and continuing through Saturday, April 22^nd. Hips 1-200 will breeze Monday, Hips 201-400 go on Tuesday, Hips 401-600 on Wednesday, Hips 601-800 go Thursday, Hips 801-1000 on Friday and Hips 1001-1208 go on Saturday. All six sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF and Blood-Horse websites.

The Spring Sale has long been a dependable source of high class racehorses, producing Classic winners Lil E. Tee, Silver Charm and I’ll Have Another, 25 millionaires and ten champions.

Last year’s sale produced the latest millionaire and champion, Ciaglia Racing, Exline-Border, Gulliver Racing, Sharon Alesia, Christensen, and Legan’s Champagne Room, 2016’s champion 2-year-old filly. The daughter of Broken Vow was on the board in four of five starts at two, breaking her maiden in Del Mar’s Sorrento Stakes (G2) in her second start, running third in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) and wrapping up her juvenile campaign with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Trained by Peter Eurton, she has earned $1,310,600 to date. Ruis Racing LLC’s Union Strike also came out of the 2016 sale. She picked a choice spot to break her maiden, taking the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) in September, with eventual champion Champagne Room (April ’16) settling for third. The daughter of Union Rags, the first grade one winner for her sire, has earned $218,600 to date. Last year’s sale also produced Jessamine Stakes (G3) winner La Coronel, Belmont Futurity (G3) winner Theory and Arlington-Washngton Futurity (G3) winner Wellabled. To date, 21 graduates of the 2016 sale have accounted for 27 stakes victories.

Older Spring graduates in the headlines in the past year were headed by J Stables, Head of Plains Partners LLC, Summer, Summers, Kisber and Summers’ Mind Your Biscuits, who took his place in the upper echelon of the sprint division and ended 2016 with a victory over fellow April graduate Sharp Azteca in Santa Anita’s $301,380 Malibu Stakes (G1). Long Lake Stable LLC and Beacon Hill Thoroughbreds LLC’s Tammy the Torpedo was also a two-time graded winner, taking Gulfstream’s $150,000 Suwannee River Stakes (G3) and Monmouth’s $101,000 Violet Stakes (G3). Since the beginning of 2016, 63 Spring Sale graduates have won or placed in 96 graded stakes, with 25 scoring 29 graded wins. A total of 181 have won or placed in 322 stakes races; with 85 accounting for 116 stakes victories.

Congrats filly tops record March Sale

Hip No. 360, a daughter of Congrats consigned by McKathan Bros., Agent, went to Kerri Radcliffe, Agent, for $1,700,000, one of five horses bringing a million dollars or more at the record setting 2017 OBS March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The session and overall sale topper is a dark bay or brown filly out of Azalea Belle, by Dixie Union, a daughter of graded stakes winner Westerly Breeze. Her eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Friday’s Under Tack session.

Three others reached the million dollar mark on Wednesday.

Hip No. 349, a daughter of Tapit consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, was sold to OXO Equine LLC for $1,100,000. The chestnut filly, who breezed a quarter in :21 2/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session, is out of graded stakes placed Arienza, by Giant’s Causeway, a daughter of champion Azeri.

OXO Equine bought a second horse from Tom McCrocklin later in the session, going to $1,050,000 for Hip No. 515, a son of Arch who worked a :20 4/5 quarter last Saturday. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Enhancing, by Forestry, a daughter of champion Heavenly Prize and a half sister to grade one winner Good Reward.

Hip No. 586, a bay colt by Pioneerof the Nile consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was purchased by Robert E. & Lawana Low for $1,000,000. The three quarter brother to graded stakes winner Cairo Prince, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 on Saturday, is out of Heavenly Vision, by Forestry.

At Tuesday’s opening session, Hip No. 127, a son of Orb consigned by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, was sold to Solis / Litt for $1,250,000. The bay colt, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat last Thursday, is out of Remember, by Forest Wildcat, a half sister to grade one winner Dancing Forever.

At Wednesday’s session, Eddie Plesa, Agent for Karl & Cathi Glassman, went to $900,000 for Hip No. 345, Apostle, a son of Medaglia d’Oro consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent. The bay colt, who worked an eighth in :10 2/5 on Friday, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Carve out of Apt, by A. P. Indy.

Steven W. Young, Agent went to $900,000 for Hip No. 488, consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, a bay colt by Union Rags who turned in eighth in :10 flat on Saturday. He’s out of Delightfully So, by Indian Charlie, a half sister to Canadian champion Delightful Mary.

Hip No. 425, a son of Tapit consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to John C. Servis, Agent, for $875,000. The half brother to stakes placed Entertainer, who breezed an eighth in :10 3/5 at the Under Tack Show, is out of graded stakes winner Cherokee Queen, by Cherokee Run.

Alex & JoAnn Lieblong went to $850,000 for Hip No. 608, a son of Tiznow consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent. The bay colt, who worked a quarter in :20 4/5 is out of I’m a Flake, by Mineshaft, a daughter of grade one stakes winner November Snow.

Hip No. 568, a dark bay or brown filly by Ghostzapper consigned by Harris Training Center LLC, Agent, was sold to Narvick International for $800,000. The full sister to grade one stakes winner Contested, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5, is out of Gold Vault, by Arch.

Hip No. 503, a bay colt by Bernardini who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5, was sold to John C. Oxley & Breeze Easy LLC for $775,000. Consigned by Hartley / DeRenzo Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, he’s a half brother to graded stakes placed stakes winner Sushi Empire out of Dowell House, by Danzig.

Hip No. 605, by Point of Entry, whose quarter in :20 3/5 was the fastest at the distance on Saturday, was purchased by Narvick International for $675,000. Consigned by All Dreams Equine, the bay colt is out of stakes placed Hug It Out, by Medaglia d’Oro, a half sister to graded stakes winner Macho Macho.

Hip No. 340, a son of Flatter consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was purchased by Xavier International Bloodstock, Agent, for $600,000. The chestnut colt, a half brother to stakes placed Don Tito out of Another Moochie, by Southern Halo, worked an eighth in :10 2/5 last Friday.

Lael Stable went to $600,000 for Hip No. 498, a son of Into Mischief consigned by Cary Frommer, Agent. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :9 4/5, is out of Doolittle, by Polish Numbers, a half sister to grade one winner Her Smile.

Hip No. 677, a son of Orb consigned by de Meric Sales, was sold to Todd A. Pletcher, Agent, for $600,000. The bay colt, who worked an eighth in :10 flat, is a half brother to stakes placed Jennifer Lynnette out of Lynnette, by Johannesburg, a daughter of grade one winner Strategic Maneuver.

For the session, 152 horses sold for a total of $29,791,500, compared with 151 horses bringing $24,869,500 at last year’s second session. The average price was $195,997, up 19% compared with $164,699 while the median price was $90,000 compared with $100,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 26.2%; it was 27.7% in 2016.

For the entire sale, 300 horses sold for a March sale record gross $56,627,000 compared with 320 bringing $51,288,000 last year and surpassing 2015’s mark of $55,432,000. The average price was a record $188,757, up 17.8% compared with $160,275 a year ago, and besting previous record of $187,201 in 2014. The median price was $100,000 compared with $102,500 last year. The buyback percentage was 27.5%; it was 26.3% in 2016. Thirty horses sold for $500,000 or more compared to 17 in 2016.

The next sale at OBS is the Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, set for April 25^ththrough April 28^th with Under Tack Shows scheduled for April 17^th through April 22^nd.

Orb colt tops March Sale’s opening session

Hip No. 127, a son of Orb consigned by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, was sold to Solis / Litt for $1,250,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2017 March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat last Thursday, is out of Remember, by Forest Wildcat, a half sister to grade one winner Dancing Forever.

Hip No. 223, a son of Curlin consigned by Imagine…, was purchased by Rattler Racing, Inc. for $950,000. The chestnut colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5, is a half brother to stakes winner Wake Up Nick out of Storm Hearted, by Lion Hearted.

Hip No. 295 also sold for $950,000, the son of Scat Daddy consigned by Ocala Stud going to Live Oak Plantation. The dark bay or brown colt, who worked a quarter in :21 3/5 on Friday, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Discreet Dancer out of West Side Dancer, by Gone West.

The session’s third $950,000 purchase was Hip No. 323, a son of Union Rags consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent, and sold to Dennis O’Neill. The bay colt, who worked an eighth in :10 flat on Friday, is out of stakes winner Alexandra Rylee, by Afleet Alex.

Baoma Corp went to $850,000 for the session’s highest priced filly, Hip No. 211, a daughter of Exchange Rate, who worked an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5. Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, she’s out of stakes placed Spring Jump, by Jump Start.

Eddie Woods also consigned Hip No. 116, a bay filly by City Zip who breezed a quarter in :21 flat at the Under Tack Show. Sold to Graham Motion, Agent, for $700,000, she’s out of Receivership, by End Sweep, and is a full sister to millionaire grade one stakes winning 2011 OBS March graduate Palace.

Hip No. 155, a son of Union Rags consigned by Randy Bradshaw, Agent, was sold for $685,000 to Simon Callaghan, Agent. The chestnut colt, who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat, is a full brother to stakes winner Tequilita out of graded stakes winner Sangrita, by Mr. Greeley.

Kerri Radcliffe, Agent paid $625,000 for Hip No. 153, a son of Super Saver consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, whose quarter in :20 1/5 was the fastest work at the distance at the Under Tack Show, and equaled the fastest quarter mile breeze ever recorded at OBS. The bay colt is out of stakes placed Sandi’s Ready, by More Than Ready.

Ms. Radcliffe, Agent, also purchased Hip No. 43, a daughter of More Than Ready consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, for $600,000. The bay filly, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat, is out of Music Score, by Storm Cat, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Distant Music.

Hip No 126, a son of War Front consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, went to Carolyn Wilson for $595,000. The bay colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 1/5 on Thursday, is a half brother to grade one winner Mani Bhavan out of Rehear, by Coronado’s Quest.

Hip No. 27, a son of Animal Kingdom consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to Solis / Litt for $550,000. The bay colt, who sped a quarter in :21 flat at the Under Tack Show, is out of stakes winner Miss Lombardi, by Unbridled Jet, and a half brother to stakes winner Miss Bullistic.

Hip No. 58, a son of Into Mischief consigned by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, was purchased by Woodford Racing for $550,000. The bay colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at Thursday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes placed Nefertiti, by Speightstown, a daughter of graded stakes winner Clearly A Queen.

For the session, 137 horses grossed $26,320,500 compared with 169 bringing a total of $26,418,500 last year. The average was $192,120, up 23% from $156,322 in 2016 and the median price was $110,000, identical to last year’s figure. The buyback percentage was 34.1% it was 24.9% in 2016.

The March Sale continues on Wednesday, March 15^th at 10:30 a.m. with Hip No.’s 339 – 677 set to go through the ring.

March Sale begins Tuesday, March 14

The OBS March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training begins Tuesday, March 14^th. Hip No.’s 1 – 338 will sell Tuesday and Hip No.’s 339 – 677 will be offered Wednesday, March 15^th. Both sessions will begin at 10:30 a.m. As always the sale will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and the Blood-Horse and DRF websites.

The catalog is available online via the OBS website. A sortable master index provides searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed.

The iPad version of the catalog can be accessed via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The App allows users to download and view the catalog, receive updates and results, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capability. At the Under Tack Show, Hip No. 153, a son of Super Saver consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, sped a quarter in :20 1/5 at Thursday’s opening session, equaling the fastest quarter mile breeze ever recorded at an OBS Under Tack Show. The bay colt is out of stakes placed Sandi’s Ready, by More Than Ready.

Hip No. 176, a bay colt by Midshipman consigned by Thoroughbred Champions Training Center LLC, worked a quarter in :20 2/5 on Thursday. He’s out of Shine a Spotlight, by Nobiz Like Shobiz, from the family of graded stakes winner Take the Cake.

The lone quarter in :20 3/5 was turned in on Saturday by Hip No. 605, consigned by All Dreams Equine, a bay colt by Point of Entry out of stakes placed Hug It Out, by Medaglia d’Oro, a half sister to graded stakes winner Macho Macho.

There were ten quarters in :20 4/5, four at Thursday’s first session.
