The final day of the under-tack show for the OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training was the day consignor Omar Ramirez had been waiting for.

The high expectations Ramirez had for Hip 1053, an Irish-bred bay colt by No Nay Never, were validated Saturday when the colt breezed a quarter in :20 2/5 to post the fastest time of the session at the distance.

The colt, who is out of the Speightstown mare Fixed Gaze, is a half-brother to multiple Group 3 placed Fixette (IRE), who is the dam of French stakes winner The Fixer (IRE).

“I was waiting all week for him,” said Ramirez, who consigns under Omar Ramirez Bloodstock. “He was one of my favorite colts and he’s been showing a lot of talent. He prepped really, really good here and I was nervous for him. But he didn’t disappoint. He did everything he was supposed to do.”

The No Nay Never colt has a page filled with international appeal as he is from the female family of multiple Group 1 winner Gallante (IRE).

“He’s a May baby but he’s beautiful, big, and well balanced,” Ramirez said. “I was so excited coming to the sale. With him being by No Nay Never, I think it will help him. He has all the pedigree to be a standout in this sale.”

Two horses worked in :9 4/5 to tie for the fastest eighth on the day.

Consignor Eddie Woods, who is set to retire after the April sale and sold the OBS record-setting $3 million Gun Runner colt at the March auction, sent out Hip 1142, a dark bay or brown filly by Independence Hall for the co-fastest time. The filly is out of the Posse mare Hiding, who is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Ancient Secret, an OBS April grad, and stakes winner Amanda’s Folly.

The other juvenile who worked in :9 4/5 was Hip 1206, a bay filly by Win Win Win  consigned by Navas Equine. The filly is out of the winning mare Just Like Lucy, who is by OBS April grad Majesticperfection. Just Like Lucy is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Pretty Perfection and is from the female family of Grade 1 winner and OBS grad Sweet Talker.

A pair colts representing Hoppel LLC gave their consignor a boost of confidence ahead of the 2025 OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training next week when they each worked a quarter in :20 2/5 to tie for the fastest time at the distance during Day 6 of the under-tack show.

Hip 875, a bay colt by OBS grad Yaupon and Hip 1017, a bay colt by Maclean’s Music both strutted their stuff during another day of clear weather conditions. The Yaupon colt was the first of the duo to hit the track and is out of the winning Scat Daddy mare Chestnut Street, who is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Saratoga Snacks.

“It’s hard to expect 20.2. We expected really good breezes, but today exceeded expectations,” said Jesse Hoppel of Hoppel LLC. “The Yaupon colt, he has a really smooth way of moving. He has a lot of balance and he’s everything we want in a horse. Now that he’s shown he can perform, hopefully that will come through in the end.”

The Maclean’s Music colt also has a page filled with black type. He is out of the winning mare Embur’s Zip, who is by OBS grad City Zip. Embur’s Zip herself is out of multiple graded stakes winner and Canadian champion Embur’s Song and is from the female family of Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Exaggerator.

“He’s a really pretty horse,” Hoppel said of Hip 1017. “I see the Maclean in him, but I also see a lot of City Zip. I like that City Zip attitude. He has a very ‘game on’ mentality. I think he’s a precocious horse who is really talented. I anticipate having a good sale.”

Two youngsters also tied for the fastest eighth on the day with Hip 903, a bay colt by Silver State and Hip 1011, a bay filly by Yaupon, each working in :9 4/5.

Consigned by Envision Equine, the Silver State colt is out of the winning Distorted Humor mare Comic. Comic is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Callback and is from the female family of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver and Grade 1 winner Girolamo.

The Yaupon filly is consigned by Rivera Training and Sales and is out of stakes winner Efforting, who is by OBS grad Into Mischief. Efforting is out of a daughter of multiple stakes winner and graded stakes producer Alltheway Bertie.

The fifth day of the Under Tack show for the 2025 OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training sale saw a quartet of youngsters stand out as they each worked an eighth in :9 4/5 to tie for the fastest time of the day at the distance.

With temperatures in the mid 70s and light wind throughout, two colts and two fillies – all by young sires – shared the top time. Included in the group were:

• Hip 741, a chestnut filly by Justify out of the Malibu Moon mare Aurora Point consigned by Top Line Sales LLC. Aurora Point is a half-sister to stakes winner and Grade 1 placed Rattlesnake Bridge.
• Hip 775, a chestnut colt consigned by Scanlon Training & Sales by Essential Quality out of the stakes placed mare Be Sneaky, who is by OBS grad Into Mischief. The colt is from the female family of graded stakes winners Red Ruby, Mo Tom, and Crupi.

David Scanlon of Scanlon Training & Sales said that while many of the Essential Quality offspring he has seen look like they would benefit from more time, the chestnut colt he prepped has been touting himself as a more mature type.

“(The time) wasn’t surprising from that horse,” Scanlon said. “We’ve just been really high on him all year. He looks like a real 2-year-old type. He’s a real strong horse, big hip, big, gorgeous walk. He’s just a beautiful athlete. He’s a little stronger than some of the Essential Qualities. I think some of them have looked a little more like they’re going to develop later, but he’s much more mature.

“He’s out of an Into Mischief mare and I can see a lot of Into Mischief in him.”

A dark bay colt by Independence Hall out of the Candy Ride (ARG) mare Waltzing made the most of ideal weather conditions on the day when he breezed a quarter in :20 2/5 to post the fastest time for the distance during the fourth day of the Under Tack show for the 2025 OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training sale.

Consigned by Wavertree Stables as Hip 619, the colt comes from a family with proven ability on both turf and dirt. Waltzing is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Dancing Solo as well as Grade 1 placed Dancing. The mare is also out of a full sister to Grade 1 winner Voodoo Dancer.

Given the way the colt prepped in the weeks leading up to his under-tack outing, Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree was quietly optimistic the breeze would pan out as impressive as it did.

“We were probably as confident bringing him up there as you could be with a horse,” Dunne said. “You don’t ever expect one to go in :20 2/5, I think that’s the first time we’ve had one go that fast. In terms of how he trained and prepped, he couldn’t have given any better signs than he was giving.

“Physically, he’s a stunning horse. He’s a big rangy horse, very athletic. He surpassed all expectations. I would say that the only way anybody doesn’t like him is if they don’t like horses.”

For the second day in a row, a filly by a top sprinter from the consignment of Tom McCrocklin flaunted her ability over the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company track.

With cooler temperatures in play Tuesday, McCrocklin watched as Hip 363, a chestnut filly by OBS April grad Mitole, threw down the fastest time for a quarter when she breezed in :20 2/5 during the third day of the Under Tack show for the 2025 OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training sale.

The Mitole filly duplicated the effort put forth by fellow McCrocklin entrant, Hip 181 on Monday when the daughter of OBS grad Yaupon also worked in :20 2/5 to post the fastest time at the distance. The Mitole filly is out of the winning stakes placed Big Drama mare Sadie Be Good, an OBS grad who has had two of her three foals to race become stakes placed.

Keeping with the trend, McCrocklin also send out Hip 508, a chestnut colt by Tiz the Law out of the winning Forestry mare Taboo who worked in :20 3/5 on Tuesday. Taboo, an OBS grad, is out of Grade 1 winner and producer Dream of Summer and is a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Creative Cause and Vexatious and Grade 2 winner Destin.

“Both horses today, they are fast horses,” McCrocklin said. “I was not surprised but I was certainly pleased. They had trained well at the farm and prepped well here. They both have standard things I like in a horse: big deep shoulder, big deep heart girth, long, pretty neck and a strong hind leg.

“We’re very happy and we’ve had a really good breeze show so far. We still have other cakes in the oven.”

Tuesday saw two horses break the :10 second barrier. Hip 356, a bay colt by Galilean consigned by Next Level Thoroughbreds, and Hip 416, a bay colt by OBS grad Into Mischief out of the winning Empire Maker mare Silk Route, each worked an eighth in :9 4/5 to post the fastest time at the distance.

Consigned by Kings Equine, the Into Mischief colt is a full brother to unbeaten multiple stakes winner Taraz.

The bay colt by Galilean is out of Grade 2 winner Royale Michele, by Elusive Quality, and provided a highlight moment for Next Level’s Abraham Gardea in his first year of consigning on his own.

“He’s been showing us that he could really run from the beginning,” said Gardea. “He always showed he had a lot of speed and ever since I put the blinkers on him, he’s just turned into a different horse. He’s more focused. He’s got a good personality, a good mind. He’s just a good horse to be around.

“The is my first year for the consignment so it’s really nice to have a horse like that.”

“She’s quick and obviously the stallion is very, very good with fillies and colts,” Brennan said of Squib. “She’s matured a lot. She’s medium sized but she’s very balanced and very efficient on the racetrack. She had a nice prep last week and she gave us every indication she would work very well.”

With both dirt and turf aptitude in her bloodlines, as well as Not This Time’s ability to throw top-class runners on either surface, Brennan feels Squib could have a variety of suitors when she enters the sale ring.

“The pedigree is there. She’s not limited at all,” Brennan said. “This filly has the page to back her up.”

Amidst warm temperatures accompanied by occasional wind gusts, the first day of the Under Tack show for the 2025 OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training sale began with a trio of youngsters breezing an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5 to tie for the fastest time at the distance.

The lone filly to throw down the top time was also the first to breach the :10 mark as Hip 75, a dark bay or brown filly by Upstart out of the winning Proud Citizen mare Lovely Marissa, put forth an impressive move for David McKathan and Jody Mihalic’s Grassroots Training & Sales LLC consignment. The filly is from the female family of Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Skywalker and is a full sister to the winning OBS April grad Don’t Wait Up.

“She’s been a really nice filly all year, we expected her to do well,” said McKathan. “She prepped well so we’re very happy with her. Physically, she’s everything you want to look at when you look at a horse. She’s very well balanced, she’s just beautiful. She’s been showing us all year that she’s got ability.”

The Upstart filly led a strong day for McKathan as he also had three horses in his consignment work in :10 flat.

“It was a nice beginning,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting a break with some cooler weather on Tuesday.”

The first of the two colts to work in :9 4/5 was Hip 70, a dark bay or brown colt by OBS grad Shancelot out of Loteria by Nyquist consigned by Top Line Sales LLC. Loteria is out of a full sister to champion Bernardini.

Matching that time was Hip 134, a bay colt by OBS April grad By My Standards out of Memento by Nyquist consigned by AVP Training and Sales. Memento is out of stakes winner Martha’s Moon and is from the female family of Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour.
