One day after a filly by Jackie’s Warrior became the first horse to crack the :9 3/5 threshold during the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, two more youngsters joined that illustrious rank during the fourth session of works April 9.
Under overcast and windy conditions on Thursday, Hip 805, a dark bay or brown colt by Mind Control, signaled the same precocity of his multiple Grade 1 winning sire when he posted the co-fastest time for an eighth of a mile during the day’s first group. Consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales, the colt is out of the Flatter mare First Valentine, a daughter of stakes winner First Ascent, and is from the female family of multiple Grade 1 winner Mor Spirit.
“He’s an athletic, nice moving horse,” said David McKathan of Grassroots Training & Sales, which he co-owns along with Jody Mihalic. “We were pretty sure he was going to work fast. He prepped really well. He’s a pretty straightforward horse. (Mind Control) gets a decent bodied horse and this guy is a New York bred. We like the New York breds, but this colt is really going to do well for somebody anywhere.”
That effort was matched one group later when Hip 754, a bay filly by McKinzie consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), threw down that top time. Success on the OBS grounds runs in the family for the McKinzie filly as she is out of the winning mare E Built This City, who is by OBS graduate City Zip, and is a half sister to stakes placed winner and OBS graduate Fulminate.
