Three Tie for Fastest Eighth on Day One of OBS Spring Under Tack Show

Amidst warm temperatures accompanied by occasional wind gusts, the first day of the Under Tack show for the 2025 OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training sale began with a trio of youngsters breezing an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5 to tie for the fastest time at the distance.

The lone filly to throw down the top time was also the first to breach the :10 mark as Hip 75, a dark bay or brown filly by Upstart out of the winning Proud Citizen mare Lovely Marissa, put forth an impressive move for David McKathan and Jody Mihalic’s Grassroots Training & Sales LLC consignment. The filly is from the female family of Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Skywalker and is a full sister to the winning OBS April grad Don’t Wait Up.

“She’s been a really nice filly all year, we expected her to do well,” said McKathan. “She prepped well so we’re very happy with her. Physically, she’s everything you want to look at when you look at a horse. She’s very well balanced, she’s just beautiful. She’s been showing us all year that she’s got ability.”

The Upstart filly led a strong day for McKathan as he also had three horses in his consignment work in :10 flat.

“It was a nice beginning,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting a break with some cooler weather on Tuesday.”

The first of the two colts to work in :9 4/5 was Hip 70, a dark bay or brown colt by OBS grad Shancelot out of Loteria by Nyquist consigned by Top Line Sales LLC. Loteria is out of a full sister to champion Bernardini.

Matching that time was Hip 134, a bay colt by OBS April grad By My Standards out of Memento by Nyquist consigned by AVP Training and Sales. Memento is out of stakes winner Martha’s Moon and is from the female family of Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour.

Two horses breezed a quarter in :20 3/5 to tie for the fastest time at that distance:

  • Hip 123, a bay colt by Mendelssohn out of the winning Archarcharch mare Marvelous Spot consigned by Hoppel LLC. Marvelous Spot is a half-sister to Sambuca Classica, dam of champion Classic Empire.
  • Hip 163,  a bay filly by Battalion Runner out of the winning Blame mare Miss Monk consigned by Ortega Stables LLC. Miss Monk, an OBS grad, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Wicked Strong.

A total of 26 horses breezed in :10 flat:

  • Hip 4, a bay colt by Improbable out of the stakes winning Freud mare Karakorum Elektra consigned by My Little Stable Racing.
  • Hip 7, a bay colt by Independence Hall out of the winning Exchange Rate mare Kept consigned by Majestic. Kept is out of stakes producer Safe Return.
  • Hip 15, a dark bay or brown filly by Win Win Win out of the winning Smart Strike mare Kiteta consigned by Shooting Star Sales LLC. Kiteta is a granddaughter of multiple graded stakes producer Cosmic Fire.
  • Hip 21, a chestnut filly by Speightstown out of Lady Byng by Distorted Humor consigned by Niall Brennan Stables. Lady Byng is a half sister to graded stakes winner Old Time Hockey and comes from the female family of multiple Grade 1 winner and sire Scat Daddy.
  • Hip 24, a dark bay or brown filly by OBS grad Yaupon out of the winning graded stakes placed Forestry mare Lady Lumberjack, who is an OBS grad. The filly is consigned by Niall Brennan Stables and is a half-sister to stakes producer Richwood.
  • Hip 30, a dark bay or brown colt by Nyquist out of winning Tapit mare La Muse consigned by de Meric Sales. La Muse is out of champion My Miss Aurelia.
  • Hip 38, a bay colt by OBS grad Goldencents out of Lauded by Medaglia d’Oro consigned by GOP Racing Stable Corp. The colt hails from the female family of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and sire Fusaichi Pegasus.
  • Hip 44, a chestnut colt by Practical Joke out of Leah Chase by Lemon Drop Kid consigned by Cesar Loya Training & Sales.
  • Hip 53, a chestnut colt by OBS grad Kantharos out of the winning Twirling Candy mare Levelplayingfield consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC. The colt is from the female family of multiple Grade 1 winner Annals of Time.
  • Hip 62, a chestnut colt by Lexitonian out of the winner Richard’s Kid mare Little Miss Ellie consigned by Scenic Sales. The colt is from the immediate female family of graded stakes winner and Grade 1 placed Lea Lucinda.
  • Hip 66, a chestnut colt by Practical Joke out of Lookintogetlucky by Candy Ride (ARG) consigned by Caliente Thoroughbreds. The colt is from the family of Grade 1 winner Noble Bird.
  • Hip 69, a bay colt by Street Boss out of the winning Successful Appeal mare and OBS April grad Lost in Success consigned by Marcial Galan. The colt is from the female family of Grade 1 winner Secret Hello and Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner and OBS grad, Plum Pretty.
  • Hip 72, a dark bay or brown filly by OBS grad Yaupon out of Love Ava Love by Mr. Greeley consigned by RiceHorse Stable (Brandon & Ali Rice). The filly is from the female family of Canadian champion Alywow.
  • Hip 93, a chestnut colt by Authentic out of Madison Kat by Discreetly Mine consigned by JVC Training and Sales. Madison Kat is a half sister to Grade 1 winner Paola Queen.
  • Hip 95, a dark bay or brown colt by Independence Hall out of the winning Street Boss mare Madre Ditutticapi consigned by JP Training & Sales.
  • Hip 96, a gray or roan filly by Tapit out of the stakes winning No Nay Never mare Mae Never No (IRE) consigned by de Meric Sales.
  • Hip 100, a bay filly by Blame out of the winning Honor Code mare Magically Honored consigned by Eddie Woods. The filly is from the female family of sire Distorted Humor.
  • Hip 101, a bay filly by Charlatan out of the winning graded stakes placed Storm Cat mare Magical Ride consigned by Grade One Investments LLC. Magical Ride is the dam of stakes winner Space Mountain and multiple Grade 1 placed Ride On Curlin.

  • Hip 115, a bay filly by Code of Honor out of the winning stakes placed mare Mandamus by Constitution consigned by Two Cousins Training and Sales. Mandamus, an OBS grad, is out of a half sister to Canadian champion Riding the River.
  • Hip 118, a dark bay or brown filly by Caracaro out of Marazion Girl by Bellamy Road consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC. The filly is from the female family of OBS grad and graded stakes winner Pomeroys Pistol, dam of multiple graded stakes winner and sire Thousand Words.
  • Hip 128, a chestnut filly by Core Beliefs out of Mean Maggie May by Malibu Moon consigned by Envision Equine.

  • Hip 155, a bay colt by Rock Your World out of the winning Dynaformer mare Miss Blarney Stone consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC. Miss Blarney Stone is a half sister to graded stakes winner Skyway.
  • Hip 169, a bay colt by Beau Liam out of Mistress of Evil by Frosted consigned by Eddie Woods. Mistress of Evil, an OBS graduate, is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Opus Forty Two.

Two horses breezed in :20 4/5:

  • Hip 86, a bay filly by Audible out of the Street Sense mare Lustica consigned by Eddie Woods. The filly hails from the female family of champion and sire Midshipman and graded stakes winner Fast Cookie, dam of Grade 1 winner Frosted.
  • Hip 112, a bay filly by Charlatan out of the winning graded stakes placed Tizway mare Malibu Stacy consigned by Tom McCrocklin. Malibu Stacy is out of multiple graded stakes winner Malibu Pier and is a full sister to stakes winner and Grade 1 placed, Coasted.

Four horses breezed in :21 flat:

  • Hip 40, a bay filly by Maximus Mischief out of L. A. Way by Tizway consigned by Tom McCrocklin. The filly is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Glengarry.
  • Hip 85, a gray or roan filly by Vekoma out of Lunar Lullaby by Malibu Moon consigned by Tom McCrocklin. Lunar Lullaby is a half sister to Grade 1 winner Maracuja.
  • Hip 89, a bay filly by Beau Liam out of the winning Sky Mesa mare Lynda’s Rage consigned by Majestic. Lynda’s Rage is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Takeover Target and Grade 1 producer Ladies’ Privilege.
  • Hip 104, a dark bay or brown colt by Upstart out of Magnanimous by Karakontie (JPN) consigned by White Lilac (Katie Miranda). Magnanimous is a half sister to champion Jaywalk and Grade 1 producer Danzatrice.

The OBS April under tack show continues April 7 at 8 a.m. with hips 174 – 346. The under tack show runs through April 12 with the sale itself taking place April 15-18 with sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. each day.
