OBS graduates scored four stakes wins on Saturday at Pimlico on the Preakness Day undercard.
Lea Farms, LLC’s Lightening Larry led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $200,000 Chick Lang Stakes (G3), pressing pacesetting fellow OBS graduate Cogburn (April ’21) from the start, taking command a furlong from home and beating him by three quarters of a length. Chasing Time (April ’21) rallied to finish third. It’s the second stakes win for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Uncaptured, sold for $50,000 by Pick View LLC, Agent, at the 2021 March Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner’s Jaxon Traveler set a pressured pace in the $150,000 Maryland Sprint Stakes (G3), turned back a second challenge turning for home and eased away late to score by a length and three quarters. That’s four stakes wins for the 4-year-old son of Munnings, purchased for $140,000 out of the Grassroots Training & Sales consignment at the 2020 OBS Spring Sale by L.E.B., Agent for West Point Thoroughbreds, Inc. after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Team Hanley and Parkland Thoroughbreds’ Joy’s Rocket bounced right to the lead in the $100,000 Skipat Stakes and was never threatened, drawing away in the stretch to a 4-1/4 length victory. It’s the fourth stakes win for the graded stakes placed 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by Anthony’s Cross, also trained by Steve Asmussen, now 15-5-5-1 with $449,474 in earnings. After breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat at the 2020 OBS March Sale’s Under Tack Show, she was purchased for $47,000 out of the GOP Racing Stable Corp. consignment. watch her under tack video
William Branch’s Carotari picked up right where he left off at the end of last year, scoring a front running 1-1/2 length victory in the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint Stakes. It’s the fifth stakes win for the 6-year-old graded stakes placed gelding by Artie Schiller, consigned to the 2018 April Sale by TIP Thoroughbred Investment Possibilities, Agent, where he went through the ring after working an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher’s Me and Mr. C saved ground in the early going of Gulfstream’s $75,000 Mr. Steele Stakes, came around horses to rally on the outside down the stretch and was best by a length at the wire. Fellow OBS graduate Hot Blooded (October ’19) led a furlong out and settled for third. That’s two stakes wins for 5-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Khozan, trained by Mike Maker, now 23-6-4-2 with $248,540 in earnings.
