A Bit of Both, Archidust post wins at the 2019 OBS Day of Racing

A large crowd turned out in sunny weather for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company 2019 November Day of Racing, headed by the pair of six furlong OBS Sprint Stakes for OBS graduates.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC, Darsan Inc., Bethlehem Stables and David Simon’s A Bit of Both stalked the early leader in the $125,000 OBS Filly and Mare Sprint, took command on the turn, opened daylight in the stretch and was best by 3-1/2 lengths over Lonnie Stokes’ Caramel Martini (January ’19). Northwest Thoroughbreds LLC’s Ms Meshak (August ‘16) checked in third. That’s three stakes victories for the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Paynter, now 9-7-1-1 with earnings of $289,310. Trained by Jason Servis, she was ridden by Paco Lopez and ran the distance in 1:10 4/5. She was sold by breeder Darsan, Inc. for $10,000 at the 2017 OBS October Selected Yearling Sale. In the day’s final race, the $125,000 OBS Sprint, Crawford Farms Racing’s Archidust slipped through on the inside to take charge in the stretch, then held off a late charge by Ed and Susie Orr’s Boldor (April ’18) to score by a length and three quarters, with Dawn Mendez and Steve Henry’s Front Loaded (August ’15) settling for third by the same margin.  It’s the third stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Verrazano, who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before he was purchased by Juan Pacanins, Agent, for $300,000 out of the Whitman Sales consignment at the 2018 OBS March Sale. The first four races of the ten-race card were for quarter horses. Trainer Elio Vasquez and jockey Yordanis Amaro combined to win first two. Jose L. Ramirez’ 5-year-old gelding Joe Osceola was the winner by a length in the opener, running 330 yards in :17.294. The second went to Yoandys Amaro’s Transatlantico by half a length, with the 5-year-old gelding covering the 330 yards in :17.174.

Maple Spears’ Willie Speedy Spears took the third race by a length and a quarter, running 220 yards in :12.564. Kevin Gonzalez rode the 6-year-old for trainer James Dawson.

Howard Kleinberg’s Beyondthepatriot was a three quarter length winner, trained by his owner and ridden by Armando Alvidrez. The 8-year-old gelding ran 220 yards in :12.361.

Thoroughbreds took the stage in races five through eight. The fifth race was for maidens, and Donald F. Hunt and Maclayne T. McGowan’s Fireball Run tracked the early pace, took command leaving the backstretch and cruised from there to victory by 5-3/4 lengths. Trained by Donald F. Hunt and ridden by Christian Dominguez, the 6-year-old gelding by Run Away and Hide ran six furlongs in 1:13 1/5.

In the sixth, a Starter Allowance, Leilani Collins’ Zandar was last turning for home, but ran past the field in the stretch under Jose Ferrer and scored by 3-1/4 lengths. Trained by Tom A. Clark, the 7-year-old gelding by Kitten’s Joy covered six furlongs in 1:12 2/5.

The seventh was for maidens, and Bernard L. Kleine’s Lady Marvel went right to the front and led all the way, winning by a length and three quarters in :1:15 flat for six furlongs. Stephanie E. Sheroski rode the 3-year-old daughter of To Honor and Serve, saddled by Brian R. Lusk.

Willie Martinez sent Bruno Schickedanz’s Kitchen Fire to the lead after the break in the eighth, and the 4-year-old gelding by First Defence was much the best, drawing away in the lane to a 17-1/4 length victory. Trained by Nick Joseph Caruso, he ran six furlongs in 1:11 1/5.
