OBS graduates scored six stakes victories over the Memorial Day weekend, highlighted by a 1-2-3 sweep at Belmont, and a first time starter punching her ticket to Royal Ascot.
Steve Landers’ Pole Setter took the lead at the start of the $100,000 Paradise Creek Stakes at Belmont on Saturday and led all the way, scoring by a length and a quarter in a swift 1:20 3/5 for seven furlongs on the turf. Fast closing OBS graduate Pulsate (April ’18) was second, with Strike Silver (October ’17) settling for third. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old son of Take Charge Indy, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5 before he was purchased for $220,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2018 OBS April Sale. Breeze Easy, LLC’s Karak went right to the front in her debut in a $100,000, five furlong maiden special weight dash on the turf against the boys on Saturday at Belmont, battled her stablemate into the stretch then drew away late to win by three lengths. Trained by Wesley Ward, the 2-year-old daughter of Karakontie (JPN), the first winner for her sire, earned $50,000. She was sold for $365,000 by All Dreams Equine, Agent, at the 2019 OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. She’s being pointed for Royal Ascot, looking to follow in the footsteps of Ward-trained two-time OBS graduate Shang Shang Shang (March ’18, January ’17), winner of the Norfolk Stakes (G2) last summer. watch her under tack video
Paul P. Pompa, Jr. and Golden Goose Enterprises’ Beautiful Lover tried stakes company for the first time in the $81,000 Boiling Springs Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday, and the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Arch came from off the pace, caught the leader in deep stretch and scored by half a length. It’s her third straight win for trainer Chad Brown, leaving her 4-3-0-0 with $113,700 in earnings. She was purchased for $475,000 by Steven W. Dennis G. Smith, Span Investments Inc. and George DeBenedicty’s Trenchtown Cat dueled with fellow OBS graduate Razorback Lady (June ’17, October ’15) into the stretch of Saturday’s $75,000 Ana T. Stakes at Gulfstream, took charge for good a furlong from home and drew away to beat her by 3-3/4 lengths. It’s the second stakes victory for the 3-year-old old daughter of Discreet Cat, trained by Rohan Crichton, now 5-3-1-0 with $157,445 in earnings. Ivery Sisters Racing’s Monte Man defended his title in the $75,000 Louisiana Legends Sprint Stakes on Saturday at Evangeline Downs, circling horses on the turn to reach contention, reaching the lead in deep stretch and holding on to win by three quarters of a length. It’s the sixth stakes win for the 6-year-old gelding by Custom for Carlos, purchased for $125,000 out of the Royal Thoroughbred International consignment at the 2015 OBS March Sale after working an Under Tack eighth in in :10 1/5. Beach Haven Thoroughbreds LLC’s unbeaten Newly Minted is three for three with two stakes wins after chasing pacesetting fellow OBS graduate Cash Only (April ’18) into deep stretch, catching her, and beating her to the wire by 2-1/2 lengths in the $125,000 Bouwerie Stakes on Monday at Belmont Park. Consigned to the 2018 OBS April Sale by Sequel Bloodstock, Agent for Chester and Mary Broman, she was sold to Beach Haven for $110,000 after an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. Ltd.’s Awhitesportscoat made his stakes debut in Sunday’s $50,000 George Royal Stakes at Hastings Park, and the 5-year-old gelding by Hansen came from off the pace, took command after straightening away in the stretch and eased away to a 2-3/4 length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Apalachee Bay (June ’17) checked in third. That’s two straight wins, leaving him with a 19-5-3-3 career record and $115,392 in earnings.
