Kevin Attard and Soli Mehta’s Starship Jubilee trailed in the early going of the $255,500 Canadian Stakes (G2) at Woodbine on Saturday, but circled horse en route to the lead with a furlong to go, then drew away late to win by 3-3/4 lengths. It’s the third graded stakes win for the two time OBS graduate, sold by The Acorn at the 2014 August Yearling Sale and then consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, to the 2015 April Sale where she breezed an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show. Randy Howg, Selman Shaby and Lana Smith’s Bourbon Cowboy scored his first stakes win in the $50,000 Tom Mentzen H. B. P. A. Sprint Stakes at Canturbury Park on Friday night, rallying to take the lead in mid-stretch and battling gamely to victory by a head. It’s the second straight win for the 6-year-old gelding by Cowboy Cal, trained by Robertino Diodoro, now 32-7-8-4 with $296,926 in earnings. A two time OBS graduate, he was sold by Forbush Farms, Agent, at the 2013 Selected Sale of Yearlings before he was purchased for $50,000 out of the Bo Hunt consignment at the 2014 April Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. The younger generation enjoyed a productive weekend with nine two-year-old OBS graduates winning maiden special weight races in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania and California.
In the first race at Gulfstream on Saturday, J&G Stables LLC and Nicholas Vaccarezza’s Shazier scored in his second trip to the post, taking a mile race on the turf by a length and a half. Three races later, Karl & Cathi Glassman’s Abuela’s Love, a daughter of Cairo Prince, made her second start a winning one, romping home by 4-1/4 lengths in a five furlong dash on the main track. The second race went to Brandywine Farm’s Pakhet, who won the first division of a mile and a sixteenth turf test by a length and a quarter in her second start. In the third race, Marc Keller’s Aquariva was a winner at first asking by a length and a half in a six furlong dash.
