Slam Dunk Racing’s Axelrod was well off the pace in the early going of the $500,000 Indiana Derby (G3) but swept into contention on the turn and then closed steadily down the stretch and was up at the wire to win by a head. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old Florida-bred son of Warrior’s Reward, second last time out in the Affirmed Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. Trained by Mike McCarthy, he’s now 8-3-1-1 and has earned $360,925. Consigned by Bobby Jones Equine to the 2016 OBS Winter Mixed Sale, he was sold to Slam Dunk for $25,000.

Fellow OBS graduate Kelly’s Humor (August ’16) checked in third. It’s the first stakes score for the 3-year-old daughter of Violence, consigned by RiceHorse Stables, Agent, to the 2017 OBS March Sales where she turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5.
