Records fell by the wayside as the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training reached new levels in gross, average, and median figures. The fourth and final session and entire sale was topped by Hip No. 1197, a bay filly by Medaglia d’Oro consigned by Randy Bradshaw, Agent, purchased by Steven W. Young, Agent, for $1,100,000. A half sister to grade one stakes winner Stormello out of Wilshewed, by Carson City, her eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Saturday’s Under Tack session.
- Hip No. 1164, a son of Kantharos consigned by Ocala Stud, was purchased by Stonestreet Stables LLC & E 5 Racing for $800,000. The chestnut colt, who turned in a quarter in :20 4/5 at Saturday’s Under Tack session, is out of Valid Concorde, by Concorde’s Tune, a full sister to stakes winner Rocky River.
- Hip No. 955, a bay colt by Munnings consigned by Randy Miles, Agent, went to Ed & Susie Orr for $700,000. The half brother to stakes placed Avarice out of Senate Caucus, by Siphon (BRZ) worked an eighth in :10 flat at Friday’s Under Tack session.
- Dennis O’Neill went to $485,000 for Hip No. 1158, a gray or roan colt by He’s Had Enough, whose quarter in :20 3/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Saturday’s Under Tack session. Consigned by Envision Equine, Agent, he’s out of Up for Grabs, by First Samurai, from the family of graded stakes winner Sea of Secrets.
- Robert Masiello paid $435,000 for Hip No. 1055, a bay colt by Midshipman consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. A half brother to stakes winning OBS graduate Small Bear out of Stella Prima, by El Prado (IRE), he worked an eighth in :10 flat on Saturday.
- Hip No. 943, Starrific, a chestnut colt by City Zip consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent, was sold to Red Baron’s Barn or Rancho Temescal LLC for $400,000. Out of Screen Gem, by Dynaformer, a daughter of stakes placed Shuhrah, he turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat on Friday.
- Hip No. 1079, a daughter of Bernardini consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was purchased for $400,000 by Speedway Stables, LLC. The bay filly, who breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 on Saturday, is a half sister to graded stakes winner Den’s Legacy out of Sunshine Song, by War Chant.
- Hip No. 1161 a bay colt by Goldencents consigned by Woodside Ranch, Agent, went to Jay Em Ess Stable for $400,000. Out of Urloveisasymphony, by Forest Wildcat, a daughter of stakes placed Lifting the Veil, he breezed an eighth on Saturday in :10 flat.
- Hip No. 986, a son of Alpha consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was purchased by Linda Rice, Agent, for $350,000. The bay colt, out of stakes winner Silence Dogood, by Grand Slam, sped a quarter in :21 1/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session.
- Head of Plains & Long Lake Stables paid $320,000 for Hip No. 963, a daughter of Scat Daddy consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent. The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Friday, is a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS graduate Thank U Philippe out of She Did Tell, by West by West.
- Hip No. 1007, a bay filly by Kantharos consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Justin Casse, Agent for Tracy Farmer, for $300,000. A half sister to grade one stakes winner Sis City out of Smart Sis, by Beau Genius, she worked an eighth in :10 flat on Friday.
- Hip No. 1020, a bay filly by Warrior’s Reward consigned by Brick City Thoroughbreds, Agent, went to Baoma Corp. for $300,000. A half sister to stakes placed Catsadiva out of Song’n Dance, by Carson City, she turned in an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5 on Saturday.
- Hip No. 1149, a son of Mineshaft also consigned by Envision Equine, Agent, brought $300,000, going to Narvick International. The bay colt, whose quarter in :20 3/5 was co-fastest at the distance on Saturday, is out of graded stakes winner Two Trail Sioux, by Indian Charlie, and is a half brother to stakes placed Cheyenne Pass.
- Hip No. 1221, the final offering of the sale, is bay colt by Shanghai Bobby consigned by Hemingway Racing & Training Stables LLC, and was sold to Turnpike Partners for $300,000. Out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Your Flame in Me, by Boundary, his eighth on Saturday in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance for the session.
For the session, 161 two-year-olds sold for a total of $17,230,500, compared with 144 horses bringing $13,142,200 at the corresponding session last year. The average price was $107,022, up 17.2% compared to $91,265 in 2017 while the median was $57,000, rising 11.8% compared with $51,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 20.3%; it was 22.9% a year ago.
For the entire sale, 707 horses grossed a sale record $69,429,500, compared with 678 youngsters bringing $60,935,900 a year ago, the previous record total. The average price was a sale record $98,203, besting last year’s sale previous record $89,876. The median was a record $55,000, up 15.8% above 2017’s sale record $47,500. The buyback percentage was 17.9%; it was 17% a year ago. Sixty-six horses brought $250,000 or more compared to 60 in 2017.
