Orb colt tops Spring Sale’s opening session

Hip No. 28, son of Orb consigned by Randy Miles, Agent, was sold to Three Chimneys Bloodstock, Agent,  for $685,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2017 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at last Monday’s Under Tack session, is out of Vowel, by Dynaformer, a half sister to stakes winner Dream Nettie.

Hip No. 262, a daughter of Creative Cause consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to White Birch Farm, Inc. for $575,000. The gray or roan filly, who breezed a quarter at Tuesday’s Under Tack session in :21 flat, is a half sister to graded stakes winner Hay Dakota out of Church by the Sea, by Harlan’s Holiday.

Eric Fein (Guri Singh & Harris Fein, Agent) went to $400,000 for Hip No. 27, a son of Ghostzapper consigned by RiceHorse (Brandon & Ali Rice), Agent. The chestnut colt, out of graded stakes winner Volcat, by After Market, turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 last Monday.

Hip No. 120, a son of Candy Ride (ARG) consigned by Flying Fish, Agent, was purchased by John C. Oxley for $375,000. The bay colt, who breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat, is out of grade one stakes winner Appealing Zophie, by Successful Appeal, and is a half brother to 2017 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner Tapwrit.

Mr. Oxley also purchased Hip No. 267, a son of Into Mischief consigned by Randy Bradshaw, Agent, for $350,000. The bay colt, out of Claire’s Song, by Unbridled’s Song, a daughter of graded stakes winner Chimichurri, turned in an eighth in :10 flat at Tuesday’s Under Tack session.

Hip No. 259 was a third purchase by Mr. Oxley, paying $325,000 for a son of Jimmy Creed consigned by Julie Davies, Agent. The chestnut colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance on Tuesday, is  out of stakes winner Chitka, by Jade Hunter.

Kenji Ryotokuji went to $315,000 for Hip No. 240, a dark bay or brown colt by Overanalyze consigned by Envision Equine, Agent. Out of Centerpiece, by Bertrando, from the family of grade one stakes winner Key Phrase, he breezed a quarter in :21 flat on Tuesday.

Hip No. 174, a son of The Factor consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, went to Saul Berenson for $360,000. The bay colt, who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5, is out of stakes placed Black Oak, by Forestry, a daughter of stakes winner More for Me.

Hip No. 211, Pedal Fast, consigned by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, a bay colt by City Zip whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Tuesday’s Under Tack session, was sold to Solis / Litt for $350,000. He’s out of graded stakes winner Candy Apple (ARG), by Halo Sunrise, a half sister to champion and successful sire Candy Ride (ARG).

Klaravich Stable, Inc. went to $280,000 for Hip No. 223, a chestnut filly by Kantharos who worked a quarter in :21 flat at Tuesday’s Under Tack session. Consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, she’s out of Carsomatic, by Carson City, and is a half sister to stakes winner Carphonic.

Hip No. 59, a son of Tiznow out of graded stakes winner Withgreatpleasure, by Hold That Tiger, was sold to Steven W. Young, Agent for $260,000. The bay colt, consigned by Q Bar J Thoroughbreds LLC, worked a quarter in :21 4/5 at Monday’s Under Tack Session.

Art Sherman, Agent, went to $260,000 for Hip No. 167, a daughter of Alternation who sped a quarter in :20 4/5 on Monday. Consigned by Envision Equine, Agent, the bay filly is out of Best Practices, by Tough Knight, and is a half sister to stakes placed Best Reward.

Hip No. 228, a dark bay or brown colt by Speightstown who breezed an eighth on Tuesday in :10 flat, was purchased by McMahon and Hill Bloodstock, Agent for $260,000. Consigned by SBM Training and Sales, Agent, he’s out of grade one stakes placed stakes winner Cash for Clunkers, by Tiznow.

Hip No. 294, a son of Majestic Warrior consigned by Cary Frommer, Agent, also brought $260,000, going to Rigney Racing LLC.  A dark bay or brown colt out of stakes winner Country Diva, by Songandaprayer, he breezed an eighth in :10 flat last Tuesday.

For the day, 169 horses brought a total of $15,305,700 compared with 165 selling for a total of $11,687,500 at last year’s opening session. The average price was $90,566, a gain of 28% compared to $70,833 in 2016 while the median price rose to $50,000 compared with $47,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 23.8%; it was 22.9% last year. Seventeen horses sold for $250,000 or more compared with nine at the corresponding session a year ago.
