Record Smart Strike colt tops March Sale finale

Hip No. 333, a colt by Smart Strike consigned by King’s Equine, Agent, was sold for $1,800,000 to Stonestreet Stable LLC to top the second and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s record shattering 2013 March Sale of Selected 2-Year- Olds. The gray or roan colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 at last Friday’s Under Tack session was the sale’s co-fastest at the distance, is out of graded stakes winner Mini Sermon, by Pulpit. The price equals the previous OBS record, set at the 2006 March Sale. Hip No. 276, a colt by War Front consigned by Harris Training Center, Agent, went to Steven W. Young for $600,000. Out of Henna, by Horse Chestnut (SAF), a half sister to graded stakes winner Pomeroy, the bay colt worked an eighth in :10 1/5.

Hip No. 343, Peregrine Falcon, a colt by Malibu Moon consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, was sold to Gary Young, Agent for Deron Pearson, for $485,000. The chestnut colt, who worked an eighth in:10 1/5, is out of My Way, by Unbridled’s Song, a half sister to graded winner Academy Award.

Hip No. 331, a Birdstone colt consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, went to Conquest Stables for $475,000 after working an eighth in :10 flat. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Miner’s Secret, by Mineshaft, a half sister to graded stakes winner Woodlander.

Hip No. 318, a Discreet Cat filly consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold for $425,000 to Westrock Stables LLC. The dark bay or brown filly, who worked a quarter in :21 flat,  is out of Maria’s Pride, by Maria’s Mon, a half sister to stakes winner Smoke Mountain.

Hip No. 220, a colt by Cowboy Cal consigned by Southern Chase Farm Inc. (Greg and Karen Dodd), Agent, went to Narvick International for $410,000. The dark bay or brown colt, whose quarter in :20 4/5 was the fastest at the distance at Fridays’ Under Tack session,  is out of Deceptive, by Clever Trick, and is a half brother to Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) winner Mizdirection.

John McKay, Agent went to $410,000 for Hip No. 248, a colt by Discreet Cat consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent. The bay colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 equaled the sale’s fastest, is out of graded stakes winner Fontal (ARG), by Southern Halo.

Hip No. 285, Chisholm, a colt by Congrats consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, was sold to Cheyenne Stables LLC for $400,000. The chestnut colt, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5, is out of stakes winner Icy Warning, by Caveat.

For the session 83 horses sold for a total of  $15,077,000 compared with 86 youngsters grossing $12,720,000 at last year’s second session. The average price was $181,651, up 22.8% from $147,907 last year while the median price soared to $135,000 from $110,000 in 2012. The buyback percentage was 27.2%; it was 25.9% a year ago. Fifty-nine horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with 45 last year.

For the entire sale 182 horses sold for a total of $28,871,000 compared with 180 horses grossing $24,739,500 in 2012. The average price was a March record $158,632, up 15.4% compared with $137,442 in 2012 and breaking the sale record average of $143,262 set in 2008. The median price was a record $127,500, compared with the previous sale record of $100,000 equaled a year ago and first set in 2008. The buyback percentage was 22.9%; it was 25% last year.

The next sale at OBS is the Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, set for April 22rd through April 25th with Under Tack Shows scheduled for April 16th through 19th.
