Paul Cohen, Dave Kenney, W.C. Racing and Robert Master’s Goldencents was one of four OBS graduates scoring maiden victories as over the holiday weekend as the Del Mar meeting neared its close. The 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief went right to the front in his debut in a $71, 750 Del Mar maiden special on September 2, opened a long lead and ran away to an easy 7-1/4 length victory over fellow OBS graduate Wild Dude (April ’12, October ’10), speeding 5-1/2 furlongs in 1:02.79, just a tick off the track record of 1:02.70. Two races later, Bruce Chandler, Double Kee LLC & Purple Shamrock Racing’s Merit Man wasted no time getting his diploma, tracking the early speed in his debut in a $71,750 Del Mar maiden special, taking over in midstretch and winning by three-quarters of a length over fellow OBS graduate Sacred Ovation (March ’12). A two-time OBS graduate, the 2-year-old With Distinction colt was consigned to the 2010 Fall Mixed Sale by Hartley DeRenzo Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent before they sold him for $75,000 at the 2012 April Sale. watch his under tack video
Two more races later in the eighth, John Carver, Jerry Hollendorfer & Green Smith’s Scarlet Strike stretched out to a mile in a $71,750 maiden special weight test, rallied between horses in the final sixteenth and won by half a length. The day before, Always Believe Inc.’s Kinz Funky Monkey pressed the pace in a $71,400 special weight test, took the lead in the final sixteenth and won by a neck. It was the second start for the 2-year-old Florida-bred daughter of The Green Monkey, who brought $82,000 when sold by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds at the 2012 OBS April Sale. watch her under tack video
