Rodrigues Thoroughbreds Makes Presence Known During Day 3 of OBS June Under-Tack Show

Having galloped horses for one of the leading consignors in the industry, Bella Rodrigues is well accustomed to identifying the intangibles that make young athletes stand out in the juvenile marketplace.

In her first year consigning horses under her own banner, Rodrigues can already say some of her own offerings are on their way to distinguishing themselves in that competitive landscape.

The fledging consignment of Rodrigues Thoroughbreds signaled during the third day of under-tack shows for Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. June Two-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale it would be one to watch for the future. Rodrigues, who is set to offer four horses when the auction takes place June 16-18, sent out Hip 418, a bay filly by Rogueish to work in :9 4/5 June 11, tying with two others for the fastest eighth on the day.

The OBS June Sale marks the second auction in which Rodrigues is hanging out her own shingle, having also offered a consignment during the OBS April Sale in which she sold two horses for six figures. Having previously galloped for Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, the 22-year-old Rodrigues was strongly encouraged to bet on herself this season.

“I started with the show jumpers and that’s how I got into the horses. Then I started galloping for Ciaran Dunne at Wavertree and I worked under him for a couple of years galloping,” Rodrigues said. “I would get on my own horses after I was done with him, they were consigned with JP Thoroughbreds. But this is my first year doing my own consignment.

“Everyone was very encouraging, especially Nelson (Arroyo) from Arroyo Bloodstock and Ciaran. They were like ‘You should just do your own thing instead of consigning under someone else’. Everyone was like…take the leap of faith because everyone starts somewhere.”

Given that Rodrigues regularly gets on her own horses, she knew firsthand what kind of potential the Rogueish filly had once she got rolling on the track.

The filly is out of the winning Hansen mare Gray Nicole, a granddaughter of multiple stakes winner and graded stakes placed Putthepowdertoit. Her :9 4/5 breeze on Thursday tied her with Hip 514, Cachorrita, a bay filly by King for a Day consigned by Five Star Equestrian Sales and Hip 518, a dark bay or brown colt by Munnings consigned by GOP Racing Stable Corp.

“She prepped really great and we were very excited for her breeze,” Rodrigues said. “She was very aggressive in her training all year. She actually belongs to one of my members on the team so he was very happy. When I was riding her at the sale, I was very excited for her. I think she’s going to be a really good horse.”

The filly Cachorrita is out of the Practical Joke mare Knot Joking, a half sister to stakes winner and graded stakes placed Fusaichi Red while the Munnings colt is out of the winning Twirling Candy mare Krissys Manicure and is from the female family of influential sire Stormy Atlantic.
