OBS June Sale Looks to Build Off Market Momentum

For Immediate Release

Backstopped by record results produced during both the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company March and April auctions, the 2025 OBS June Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale aims to close out the juvenile sale season with similar momentum when it takes place June 17-18.

A total of 852 horses have been catalogued for the sale, including 83 supplemental entries, with sessions beginning at 10 a.m. each day. The June 17 sale session will offer Hips 1 – 386, plus supplemental entries 387 – 430, with the June 18 session selling Hips 451 – 833 along with supplements 834 – 873.

The full catalogue can be viewed on the OBS website

Among the standouts during the five-day under tack show was Hip 634, a bay colt by Nyquist consigned by Wavertree Stables who worked an eighth in :9 3/5 to post the fastest time at the distance, and Hip 829, a bay colt by Beau Liam consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock, who equaled the OBS track record when he worked a quarter in :20 1/5 during the fifth and final under tack session.

In addition to the top workers, a major catalogue update came when Hip 158, Khon Han won via disqualification in his career debut after crossing the wire in second by a nose in the sixth race at Gulfstream Park on June 13. Consigned by A B Thoroughbreds, the colt is by Rock Your World and is out of the winning, stakes-placed Bellamy Road mare Bella Alicita.

Market strength has been evident throughout the 2-year-old auction season as the OBS March sale posted year-to-year gains in gross and average while the April exercise produced year-over-year gains in gross and a record average. Fireworks were also aplenty during both auctions. The April sale saw a total of nine horses sell for seven figures, including six that sold during the second session alone, while OBS March sold a sale-record seven horses for $1 million or more, including a son of Gun Runner – now named Brant – who hammered for a record $3 million.

“I don’t think we’ll see much change. I think the appetite for a nice horse is always there and I think the good ones will sell really well,” said Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree Stables. “I don’t think you can hide a good one. I think the middle and lower end of the market is going to be tough but it’s always tough. So, I don’t expect to see any great changes.”

Given the ample online resources available to buyers and bloodstock agents, consignors at the June sale are confident the level of activity around the barns is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes interested parties.

“We won’t show to as many people, foot traffic is always slower at this sale, and we’ve come to understand that,” said Ali Rice of RiceHorse Stable, which sent out Hip 412, Elenique, a chestnut filly by Leinster, to post the fastest quarter in :20 3/5 during the June 12 under tack session. “But it’s mostly about people sitting at home watching the breeze shows doing their homework online and watching all the videos, which are so great now. A lot can be done remotely now and we’re seeing that show up in the lack of presence here. As agents you get worried about that, but you realize that the ones that are going to sell are going to sell no matter if they have 50 shows a day or 10.”

Graduates of the OBS June sale accounted for more than 30 stakes wins in 2024, including multiple Grade 1 winner and Eclipse Awards finalist Adare Manor, who was purchased by Donato Lanni out the consignment of Julie Davies at the 2021 June auction. Other notable June graduates include Grade 1 winners Yaupon, War Like Goddess, Zenden, and Bella Sofia as well as multiple graded stakes winner C Z Rocket, who topped the 2016 June Sale when he sold for $800,000 to Frank Fletcher Racing Operations.

Two OBS June graduates have the distinction of capturing consecutive Breeders’ Cup races: Goldencents (2012 OBS June) took the 2013-14 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and Stormy Liberal (2014 OBS June) won the 2017-18 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1). Stormy Liberal also earned the Eclipse Award for Champion Turf Male in 2018.

OBS June graduates who have won graded stakes thus far in 2025 include Gotham Stakes (G3) winner Flood Zone and multiple graded stakes winner Queen Maxima, who is currently on a five-race winning streak.
