OBS March Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale Begins March 11

For Immediate Release

The first major juvenile auction of the year kicks off this week when the OBS March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins March 11. A total of 814 horses are catalogued for the three-day sale, which runs through March 13.

To give horsemen more time in the wake of the consolidated under tack show to three days, the March 11 session of the OBS March sale will have its start time pushed back to 1 p.m. ET. Sessions will begin at 11 a.m. ET as scheduled for March 12-13. Hips 1 – 272 will sell on March 11 followed by Hips 273 – 544 on March 12 and Hips 545 – 814 on March 13. The full catalogue can be viewed on the OBS website.

The under-tack show, which was held over three days, saw two horses breeze an eighth of a mile in :9 3/5, tying for the fastest time at the distance: Hip 654, a gray or roan colt out of Tynan by Liam’s Map consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, and Hip 446, a filly by Caracaro out of the Point of Entry mare Port Marazion consigned by On The Run Stables.

The Gun Runner colt is the first foal out of Tynan, who is a half-sister to graded stakes winners Pappacap and Boppy O – making Hip 654 a three-quarter sibling to Pappacap. The Caracaro filly is from the female family of multiple graded stakes winner and OBS graduate Pomeroys Pistol.

A total of five horses breezed a quarter mile in :20 2/5 to tie for the fastest time at the distance:

The OBS March Sale has historically been one of the most productive two-year-olds sales. In 2024,OBS March Sale graduates accounted for 62 stakes wins. The 2024 edition of the OBS March Sale has produced five graded stakes winners to date, including Grade 1 winners Scottish Lassie and Gaming.

The three highest priced horses sold at the 2024 OBS March Sale – Nooni at $1,800,000, Ferocious at $1,300,000, and Sandman at $1,200,000 – all have become stakes performers. Nooni is a graded stakes winner, Ferocious is multiple Grade 1 placed, and Sandman is graded stakes placed and a contender on the Kentucky Derby trail.

In the wake of strong results from the yearling sales season, confidence is high that the juvenile auctions will continue the positive upward trend despite the discerning nature of the market.

“Obviously there is always excitement about the first two-year-old sale of the year,” said consignor Niall Brennan. “It’s a new crop of horses and sires and people are anxious to get a look. I think there was a good crowd at the breeze show. I don’t think we’re going to see anything different. I think the horses that appear to have quality and who obviously worked fast on the racetrack, they’re going to get looked at and they’re going to sell very well.

“I think you have to take a lot of confidence (from the yearling results) because people want horses…and that is very healthy,” Brennan continued. “We have a presence and people love it. There was a huge crowd for the (March 8) Tampa Bay Derby, people were animated and passionate. And I don’t think that changes.”

Notable graduates of the OBS March Sale include 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner and 2025 Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) victor White Abarrio, six-time leading sire Into Mischief, Grade 1 winners Muth, Iscreamuscream, and Speed Boat Beach, champions Forever Together, Midnight Lute, and Stardom Bound, and Breeders’ Cup winners Secret Circle, Structor and Stopchargingmaria.
