Colts by Giant’s Causeway and Tapit sold for $1.6-million apiece to top the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2014 March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training, an auction that shattered sale records for gross, average and median price.
Hip No. 343, a son of Giant’s Causeway consigned by Northwest Stud, was sold to Stonestreet Stables LLC. The chestnut colt, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at Friday’s Under Tack Session, is out of stakes winner Rebridled Dreams, by Unbridled’s Song, and is a half brother to grade one winner J. B.’s Thunder.
Hip No. 350, a Tapit colt consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, went to Al Shaqab Racing. The gray or roan colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 2/5 on Saturday, is a full brother to grade one winner Zazu, out of Rhumb Line, by Mr. Greeley.
Hip No. 230, a son of Malibu Moon consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent, went to Demi O’Byrne for $1,300,000. The bay colt, who worked an eighth in :10 flat at Saturday’s Under Tack session, is out of Layreebelle, by Tale of the Cat, a daughter of graded stakes winner Voodoo Lily, and is a half brother to recent La Canada Stakes (G2) winner Spellbound.
Michael Lund Peterson went to $700,000 for Hip No. 51, a Street Boss colt consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, whose quarter in :21 flat was the fastest at the distance at Friday’s Under Tack session. The chestnut colt is out of Albany County, by Forest Wildcat, a half sister to stakes winner Round Trip Flight.
Mark Casse, Agent, went to $700,000 for Hip No. 408, Make the Sun Shine,a daughter of Malibu Moon consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent. The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Saturday, is out of graded stakes winner Sunshine for Life.
Hip No. 263, a daughter of Super Saver consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to Alex & Jo Ann Lieblong for $675,000. Out of graded stakes placed Melissa Jo, by Fusaichi Pegasus, and a half sister to stakes placed Joedini, she worked a quarter on Saturday in :21 flat.
Hip No. 58, a Tale of the Cat filly consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to Ed Savant for $650,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5, is out of A.P. Baby, by A.P. Indy, a half sister to stakes placed Shared Heart.
Hip No. 385, a bay colt by Artie Schiller consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, went to Conquest Stables for $575,000. A full brother to stakes winner Hammers Terror out of Sister Baby, by Lord Avie, he worked an eighth in :10 flat on Saturday.
Michael Weston paid $560,000 for Hip No. 139, a colt by Midshipman whose eighth in :9 4/5 was the fastest at the distance at Friday’s Under Tack Session. Consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, the bay colt is out of Eye’ll Be Fine, by Montbrook, a full sister to graded stakes winner Amen Hallelujah.
Hip No. 68, a filly by Smart Strike consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was sold to Rockingham Ranch & Pelican LLC for $505,000. A full sister to graded stakes winner Bel Air Beauty out of stakes place Awe That, by Boundary, the dark bay or brown filly worked an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show.
For the sale, 198 horses grossed a record $37,817,500, surpassing the previous mark of $33,380,000 set in 2008. This compares with 185 bringing a total of $28,794,000 a year ago. The average price was a sale record $190,997 up 22.7% from last year’s sale record $155,643. The median was a sale record $137,500, a ten percent increase over last year’s sale record $125,000. The buyback percentage was 24.1%; it was 21.6% in 2013.
The next sale at OBS is the Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, set for April 21st through April 24th with Under Tack Shows scheduled for April 15th through April 18th.
