Patternrecognition, Union Strike take graded stakes at Belmont

Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence’s Patternrecognition took the lead at the start of Saturday’s $301,800 Kelso Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park and refused to yield, holding off a wall of challengers and scoring by a length. It was the stakes debut for the lightly raced 5-year-old Florida-bred son of Adios Charlie, sold for $420,000 by breeder Ocala Stud at the 2015 OBS April Sale after turning in an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5. Mick Ruis and Wendy Ruis’ Union Strike was relaxed off the pace early in the $300,600 Gallant Bloom Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park on Sunday, but rallied on the turn, slipped through on the inside and got up late to win by half a length, with fellow OBS graduate Kirby’s Penny (March ’15) settling for third after setting the pace.  It’s the second graded stakes win for the 4-year-old daughter of Union Rags, trained by Steve Asmussen, now 11-3-2-1 with earnings of $537,625. She was purchased by Ruis Racing for $375,000 out of the Old South Farm consignment at the 2016 OBS April Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. watch her under tack video

Ivery Sisters Racing’s Black Tide scored his second stakes victory Sunday’s $128,813 Ashley T. Cole Stakes at Belmont Park, leading from gate to wire and holding off a late charge by fellow OBS graduate Offering Plan (April ’14) and winning by a length and a quarter. Now 40-8-6-5 with $535,220 in earnings for trainer David Cannizzo, the 6-year-old gelding by Hold Me Back is a two-time OBS graduate, sold by Harry L. Landry Bloodstock at the 2013 August Yearling Sale before he was purchased for $50,000 out of the Top Line Sales consignment at the 2014 April Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. watch his under tack video

Lael Stables’ Monkeys Uncle is two for two and a stakes winner after coming from well of the pace to hit the front in mid-stretch of Saturday’s $100,000 Selima Stakes at Laurel, opening up daylight, then holding off a late challenge to score by half a length. Trained by Arnaud Delacour, she has earned $80,400 to date. The 2-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo was purchased for $300,000 out of the de Meric Sales consignment at the 2018 OBS March Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. watch her under tack video

Bran Jam Stable and David W. Clark’s Order and Law was a maiden going into the $100,000 Laurel Futurity on Saturday and a stakes winner at the finish, circling the field from last and closing down the center of the track to get up in the last jump and win by a nose. The 2-year-old son of Violence sped an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5 before he was sold by Eddie Woods, Agent, for $30,000 at the 2018 OBS April Sale. Kendall E. Hansen’s Fast and Accurate rallied to take charge of Saturday’s $100,000 Alphabet Soup Stakes at Parx Racing at the quarter pole, and held on gamely down the stretch to win by a length. That’s four stakes wins for the graded stakes winning 4-year-old colt by Hansen, purchased for $85,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2016 OBS April Sale after an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. Susan Moulton’s Altamura won her fourth straight race on Sunday at Laurel, tracking the pace in the $75,000 Oakley Stakes, taking command a furlong from home and easing away to victory by a length and a quarter. It’s the third stakes win for the 3-year-old daughter of Artie Schiller, trained by Wayne Catalano, now 6-4-0-0 with $157,400 in earnings. Consigned by Stephens Thoroughbeds LLC, Agent, to the 2017 OBS April Sale, she went through the ring after breezing an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

Lothenbach Stables’ Elusive Mischief picked up his first stakes victory in the $75,000 Punch Line Stakes at Laurel on Sunday, going head and head for the early lead, taking command on the turn and then drawing away down the stretch to a 5-1/4 length victory. It’s the third win of the year for the 3-year-old colt by Into Mischief, trained by Ian Wilkes, now 7-3-1-1 with $122,225 in earnings. The two-time OBS graduate was purchased out of the Michael & Julia O’Quinn consignment at the 2016 Selected Sale of Yearlings and then resold by Randy Bradshaw, Agent, for $350,000 at the 2017 April Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat.
