OBS graduates having a great summer at Del Mar

While East Coast OBS graduates spend their summer vacations in the mountain air and cool nights at Saratoga, their California cousins are basking in the sun and enjoying the surf at Del Mar.

The big splash to date was made in the juvenile division with the victory by Ciaglia Racing LLC, Exline- Border Racing LLC & Alesia et al.’s Champagne Room in last Saturday’s $200, 000 Sorrento Stakes (G2). Breaking her maiden in the race for trainer Peter Eurton, she’s now 2-1-1-0 and has earned $132,600. Consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, to the 2016 OBS April Sale, the 2-year-old filly by Broken Vow sped an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 before she was purchased for $310,000 by Larry Zap, Agent for Joseph Ciaglia, Jr.  watch her under tack video

The Sorrento winner was second in her debut in July to Hronis Racing’s Morganite, who broke her  maiden at first asking for trainer John Sadler. The first winner for her sire Gemologist, Morganite was purchased for $360,000 by Lane’s End Bloodstock out of the Halcyon Hammock Farm consignment at the March Sale after working  an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show.  watch her under tack video

Alvin and Wendy Ruis’ Midnight Pleasure made short work of his rivals in his July 24th debut, drawing off to a 2-1/4 length victory for trainer Shelbe Ruis. The colt by Midnight Lute worked an eighth in :10 flat before he was sold by Randy Miles, Agent, for $310,000 to Ruis Racing at the 2016 April Sale. watch his under tack video

The boys get their turn on Saturday, with a trio of OBS graduates set to go in the $200,000 Best Pal Stakes (G2). They’ll be led by Rockingham Ranch’s Big League, a 3-1/4 length winner of his debut at Del Mar on July 30. The Speightstown colt, trained by Peter Miller, was consigned by Hoby & Layna Kight to the 2016 OBS March Sale, where he breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before he was sold to Rockingham for $100,000. watch his under tack video

He’ll be joined in the starting gate by Godolphin Stable’s Drafted and Kaleem Shah’s Klimt.

Drafted, a Florida-bred son of Field Commission, broke his maiden at first asking at Keeneland in April prior to a trek to Ascot in June. The two-time OBS graduate went through the ring at the 2015 August Sale before he was purchased for $35,000 by trainer Eoin Harty out of the Kim Harrison (Top Speed Farm) consignment at the 2016 March Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. watch his under tack video

Klimt was a 5-1/4 length winner in his second start at Santa Anita in July for trainer Bob Baffert. The colt by Quality Road sped a quarter in :20 4/5 at the 2016 March Sale Under Tack Show before he was purchased for $435,000  by Bob Baffert on Mr. Shah’s behalf out of the Eddie Woods consignment. watch his under tack video

Last weekend, Speedway Stable LLC’s Noted and Quoted put on quite a show, romping to her first victory by 9-1/2 lengths on August 7th for trainer Bob Baffert. The 2-year-old Florida-bred daughter of The Factor is also a two time OBS graduate, sold by Summerfield, Agent at the 2015 August Sale and resold by Eddie Woods, Agent, to Speedway for $375,000 at the March Sale after working an Under Tack quarter in :20 2/5.  watch his under tack video

Older OBS graduates are also enjoying summer at the beach. Zayat Stables, LLC’s Jazzy Times picked up her second win in four starts with a 6-1/2 length victory on July 31st at Del Mar. The 3-year-old daughter of Discreetly Mine, trained by Bob Baffert, was purchased for $460,000 by Patrice Miller, EQB Inc., Agent for Zayat Stables, out of the SGV consignment after an Under Tack quarter in :20 3/5.  watch her under tack video

Kagele Brothers, Inc., Ernest Marchosky, Ken Shaw and Lo Hi Stable’s Why Two was an allowance winner on July 20th. He’s trained by Michael Machowsky, who signed the ticket for the Bob and John gelding at the 2014 April Sale. Purchased for $120,000 out of the Niall Brennan consignment, he worked an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Machowsky also clicked later in the meet with another 2014 April purchase when Ernest Marchosky, John Perlstein, Ken Shaw and Lo Hi Stable’s Secreto Primero scored his third win in four trips to the post this year in a $65,000 allowance test on August 3. The trainer bought the son of First Samurai, consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, for $150,000 after he worked an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Benowitz Family Trust, 3 R 3 Racing LLC, Mathilde Powell and Binith Shah’s Scattagirl picked up her third win in five starts this year on August 6th at Del Mar for trainer Leonard Powell. The 4-year-old Scat Daddy filly won a $66,380 allowance test by a length and a quarter. She’s a two time OBS graduate, sold by Summerfield, Agent, at the 2013 August Sale and resold for $87,000 by de Meric Sales, Agent, to Hubert Guy Bloodstock, Agent at the 2014 April Sale after an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. watch her under tack video   selected sale conformation photo
