Speed Boat Beach takes Santa Anita’s Malibu Stakes

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s Speed Boat Beach (Bayern – Sophia Mia) ended the year on a high note, pressing the pace in the early going of Santa Anita’s $301,000 Malibu Stakes (G1) on Tuesday, fighting for the lead on the turn, taking charge in the stretch and easing away to score by a length and a half. It’s the second graded stakes victory for the 3-year-old son of Bayern, trained by Bob Baffert, now 7-4-1-0 with $498,000 in earnings. Pine Racing Stables and Saints or Sinners’ Watsonville (Jack Milton – Grand Slam Kitten) up close early in Santa Anita’s $200,500 Mathis Mile Stakes (G2), took the lead at the head of the stretch, was headed a sixteenth out, then came again to win by a nose. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old son of OBS graduate Jack Milton, sold RSVP Sales, Agent, at the 2022 OBS Spring Sale for $240,000 after breezing an Under tack eighth in :10 flat. Talla Racing LLC’s Julia’s Dream (Flameaway – Cinnamon Girl) was right on the pace in Tuesday’s $125,000 Gowell Stakes at Turfway Park, took charge turning for home and ran off to win by 4-1/4 lengths. That’s two straight and the first stakes win for the 2-year-old filly by Flameaway, trained by Mike McCarthy, now with a 4-3-0-0 record and $161,124 in earnings.
