OBS graduates enjoy a big weekend

In addition to White Abarrio’s Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) victory, OBS grads took two other graded stakes on Saturday.

Gary Barber’s Witwatersrand (Connect – Carta deOro) tracked the leaders in the $150,000 Mazarine Stakes (G3) at Woodbine, rallied and charged between horses a furlong from home and drew away to win by 2-3/4 lengths with frontrunning OBS October/March graduate Mystic Lake ( Mo Twon – Salty Soul) settling for third. It’s the first stakes win for the 2-year-old filly by Connect, trained by Mark Casse, now 3-2-0-1 with earnings of $107,031. Doubledown Stables, Inc. War At Sea (War Front – Serene Melody) scored his first graded stakes win in the $100,000 Golden Gate Handicap (G3), closing with a rush to get up late and win by a neck. It’s the second stakes victory for the 4-year-old son of War Front, purchased for $525,000 out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2021 OBS March Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Flurry Racing Stables LLC’s Interstatedaydream tracked the leaders from the inside in Friday’s Turnback the Alarm Stakes, swung out for the drive, reached the lead a furlong out and was best by a neck. It’s the fifth stakes win for the graded stakes winning daughter of Classic Empire, purchased for $175,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2021 OBS Spring Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. Nice Guys Stables’ Where’s Kris (Twirling Candy – Sea Queen) pressed the pace in Sunday’s $150,000 Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct, battled for the lead down the stretch and prevailed by three quarters of a length at the wire. His first stakes victory leaves him 3-2-0-1 with earnings of $139,000 and caps a big weekend for trainer Rick Dutrow. Echo Papa Racing Corp.’s Freedom Principle (Flameaway – Diamondette) led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of Gulfstream’s $65,000 Armed Forces Stakes on Saturday, pressing the pace, dueling with January ’22 grad Prevent ( Neolithic – Bossy Gal) in the stretch and beating him by a length and a quarter. OBS January ’22 and Spring ’23 graduate Reminder (Audible – Mom’s Deputy) settled for third. Consigned by GOP Racing Stable to the 2023 OBS March Sale, the 2-year-old colt went through the ring after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. Laurie Plesa and Glassman Racing LLC’s Time Passage (Tunwoo – Savingtime) scored her fourth straight win and second straight stakes victory in Gulfstream’s $90,000 Cellars Shiraz Stakes on Friday. She took the lead at the start and was never headed, holding on gamely to score by a neck, with OBS Spring Sale graduate To Thyself B True (Girvin – True Martha) checking in third. She’s now 13-6-2-0 for trainer Eddie and with $326,655 in earnings. The 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Tunwoo was consigned to the 2021 October Yearling Sale by Stuart Morris, Agent, and sold for $85,000.  October Sale walking video

Quintessential Racing Florida LLC, Rocky Top Stable and LEMB Stables’ Dancing N Dixie (Neolithic – Foolhearted Woman) stepped into stakes company for the first time in Gulfstream’s $65,000 Our Dear Peggy Stakes. The 2-year-old Florida-bred filly by Neolithic turned in a sustained drive in the stretch and prevailed by half a length, with OBS March graduate De Regreso (Auible – Texas Gem) settling for third. Now 4-2-0-0 for trainer Mark Casse, she has earned $89,610 to date. A nice debut for a first time starter in Japan:

Kazumi Yoshida’s Assurbanipal (Arrogate – Georgie’s Angel) came from off the pace to score at first asking by a length in a maiden test on Saturday at Toyko Racecourse in Japan.
