St. Joe Bay scores in Santa Anita’s San Carlos Stakes

Hronis Racing LLC’s St. Joe Bay quickly opened up a daylight lead in Saturday’s $200,702 San Carlos Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita and held it to the wire, cruising to victory by three lengths. It’s the third graded stakes win for the 7-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Saint Anddan, trained by John Sadler, now 36-7-7-6 with earnings of $734,515. A two time OBS graduate, he was first consigned by Bobby Jones Equine LLC, Agent to the 2013 Winter Mixed Sale and then purchased for $60,000 out of the Bobby Dodd consignment at the 2014 June Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. watch his under tack video

Dennis G. Smith, Span Investments Inc. and George DeBenedicty’s Trenchtown Cat hopped straight from a maiden special victory into Saturday’s $125,000 Sanibel Island Stakes at Gulfstream, took command from the start and led all the way, holding on gamely to score by a neck. A 3-year-old old daughter of Discreet Cat, she was purchased for $36,000 out of the Randy Miles consignment at the 2018 OBS June Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Trained by Rohan Crichton, who signed the ticket at the sale, she’s now 3-2-1-0 and has earned $111,125. watch her under tack video

OBS graduates were 1-2 3 in a pair of stakes races on Florida Cup Day at Tampa Bay Downs on Sunday.

William Stiritz’s Wildwood’s Beauty took the $115,000 Stonehedge Farm South Sophomore Fillies Stakes, tracking fellow OBS graduate Eyeinthesky (October ’17) early and then charging past her in the stretch to a 3-1/2 length victory. Here Comes Jackie (March ’18) was a neck back completing the OBS trifecta. It was the stakes debut for the winner, a 3-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Kantharos, now 5-2-3-0 with $134,340 in earnings for trainer Scott Becker. Consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, to the 2017 October Yearling Sale, she was purchased by Mr. Stiritz for $47,000.

OBS Yearling Sale graduates dominated the $115,000 Pleasant Acres Stallions Distaff Turf Stakes, with Sabal Racing Stable’s Crown and Sugar surging three wide to the lead in the stretch and beating Bitacora (August ’15) by 2-3/4 lengths. Supercommittee (August ’16) checked in third. It’s the first stakes victory for the 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by Crown of Thorns, purchased for $1,500 out of the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2016 August Sale. Trained by Darien Rodriguez, she’s now 23-11-1-1 and has earned $217,637 to date.
