Kaleem Shah’s Iliad jumped from a December maiden victory at Los Alamitos into Sunday’s $200, 000 San Vicente Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita and the 3-year-old son of Ghostzapper handled the class raise with ease, taking command at the head of the stretch and cruising to a 3-1/2 length victory in 1:21 3/5 for the seven furlongs. Trained by Doug O’Neill, the win leaves him with a 3-2-0-0 record and earnings of $147,345. Gelfenstein Farm’s Sharp Azteca took charge of Saturday’s $350,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) three furlongs out, opened a big lead in the stretch and won eased up by 4-1/2 lengths. It’s the second graded stakes win for the two time OBS graduate, sold first by Select Sales at the 2014 August Sale. He was then purchased for $220,000 at the 2015 April Sale by Gelfenstein Farm from de Meric Sales, Agent for Golden Legacy Stables, after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5.
